demopathos··on How New Are Yann LeCun's “New” Ideas?
By some metrics, intelligence is self evident. Especially in the context when you mean approximately the same thing between intelligence/conscious.

There is some intangible property I observe when I look at a human and determine they are conscious. There is some intangible property I observe when I look at a dog and determine it is conscious. There is some intangible property I observe when I look at stable diffusion and determine it is conscious.

Some attempts to explain this intangible property have been made. Almost all of the time disagreements in these explanations boil down to semantics. Yes, I consider the ability so solve problems a demonstration of intelligence. Yes, I consider to Stable Diffusion to be solving problems in this way. Also yes, I consider a hard-coded process to be behaving in a similar way.

At the end of the day we seem to define consciousness as something that makes us sufficiently sad when we hurt it.

The average professional software engineer produces around 10 LOC per day.
demopathos··on Your online identity is owned by your email provider (2019)
Jobs exepted for pretty clear reasons. And yes Gmail has been dominant for quite a bit of time - especially since the period where it was possible to have your email be your digital identity.

Then you fall outside the probably. The overwhelming majority of people have a single address their entire life
demopathos··on “Quantum-Safe” Crypto Hacked by 10-Year-Old PC
My anecdotal usage is a combination of these two. Until I saw your provided definition I would have described chip on my shoulder to mean a sense of superiority that leads to me be rude or difficult to interact with.
demopathos··on The Marginal Advantage (2007)
I liked the writeup. I definitely see how this principle of marginal advantage extends to any competitive game that I am aware of.

Spiritually I would compare it to the concept of ruin[1] in betting games. It doesn't make sense to bet your entire stack on a single event that is anything but a certainty. A smart better must always hedge their winning odds by retaining a small portion of their funds. Similarly, marginal advantage in a game should be considered as probability edge, rather than a guarantee.

demopathos··on An incident impacting 5M accounts and private information on Twitter
If you trust twilio security policy you can defer the weakness of Twitter policy in favor of the strength of twilio.
demopathos··on You can‘t take the Bar exam if your laptop is too modern
It fades pretty quickly. My hands cramped returning from each summer vacation as a child.
demopathos··on Spotify to acquire Heardle
Interestingly enough, I concluded Wordle was definitely not dying when I looked at its Google trends just yesterday. A linear decrease in popularity from 100 to 50 is amazing staying power. Of course it's not going to be as popular as it's peak, but the fact that it avoided an exponential death means it's sticking around.
demopathos··on India's largest stock broker has 30 devs (2020)
If someone went into basket weaving club and said "look at my basket" with something they bought from the store, everyone would be a bit annoyed, even if ultimately it doesn't matter.
demopathos··on An experiment to test if Bionic Reading helps you read faster
Many of the comprehension questions could have been answered without reading the article. But some were quizzing irrelevant parts of the text. It's a hard balance to strike
demopathos··on LaMDA is not sentient
I know we are not there yet but we will reach a point where for almost all observational purposes an AI seems intelligent. And it will be intelligent because it looks like it is. That is our judgement for intelligence. If it judgement is some magical criteria we will play a moving goalposts game and eventually actually oppress an actually intelligent system.

Humans are just really big balls of parametric functions. These AI are smaller ones. We are not special because ours is gooey.

Please don't degrade the quality of hack news in the way you are.
demopathos··on Reselling Software: Don’t Start a SaaS – White Label Someone Else’s Instead
It's great utility indeed.
demopathos··on Show HN: The Amalgam Engine – Easily create isometric virtual worlds
Honestly, I look at this and really want to use it. I'd love to play like tic tac toe or something
demopathos··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
I don't think there was any high horsing that took place or was implied. I recommend you don't leave comments such as that one you just left since it comes across as rude.
demopathos··on Dont think of price, think of cost per use
I'm not sure why absolute values are inherently easier to analyze than rates.

My income is a rate so I find normalizing on time to be pretty useful. I think $/use is pretty similar to normalizing on time

demopathos··on Procedural Tree Generator
This idea was one of the things that really solidified my early learning of programming.

I made a lot of games using Scratch back in the day and I recall someone creating a tutorial on how to use recursion to draw trees. Whoever that was taught me a lot.

demopathos··on Want the best software engineers? Stop looking at Stanford and Berkeley
I felt pretty proud of myself when I scored 99 percentile on a codesignal exam. Especially since I consider many of their tests to be more legitimate than leetcode.

Some of their tests though are odd. I don't think the bugfix style is that good. But that also might be because I would just rewrite a buggy function

demopathos··on Schools should be using open source software
> You won't see Chromebooks or GSuite's Docs/Sheets used in enterprise as frequently

Right now we don't see it. GSuite will completely take Microsoft's place in corporate environments in the next 10 years. All my peers entering the workforce right now love Google docs and detest Word. It's just a matter of time for when that age bracket becomes the decision makers.

demopathos··on Finger: The First Social Software (2019)
That's good. There was a post on hacker news a week back or so that was essentially ifconfig as a webapl and I was thinking to myself, "what other command line tools can be webapls"

demopathos··on The Low Base Rate Problem (2014)
What I don't understand is why power would be so relevant. I want to know if going from A to B would increase my revenue. I run an A/B test and see statistical significance, even if a minor one. I now know that B is better than A.

I suppose the need for a power calculation comes in when considering effort. If I need 10 engineers for a month to build out a feature that won't get the power it needs for a year, it may not be worth it.

demopathos··on Alexandria Search
I'm surprised you are not a fan of geeksforgeeks. While each of their webpages have substantially less content than the pytorch docs or SO result, I find that they get to the point instantly. My mean time to solution from G4G is definitely smaller than SO.
demopathos··on Researchers train an algorithm to interpret pig grunts as emotions
I think it would be preferable if you didn't phrase comments like this in the inflammatory way you chose to phrase it.

Specifically using the word "nope" to open a sentence in response to another comment that communicates empathy is inflammatory. This is because it is dismissive of the other individual's feelings/opinions.

demopathos··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
A personal anecdote but I eat ~1600-1700 kcal each meal. I've been eating one meal a day for years. This is simply because I don't get hungry until around dinner time.
demopathos··on The Kelly criterion: How to size bets (2019)
I took a similar approach where I defined "ruin" as losing more than half my money and set a target "probability of ruin" for 5%. With a specific set of parameters I think this ends up being very similar to the maximize the median approach.
demopathos··on GPT-3 APIs are now in public beta
I can imagine a effective scamming situation where you just use gpt to be an unhelpful support staff. It doesn't matter too much what it says, so long as it sounds vaguely like a human.

It adds artificial legitimacy to something that might be without it

demopathos··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
