delinquentme··on You Are Going to Die
By * all * measurable aspects we're living in the most peaceful time known in all recorded history.

http://www.ted.com/talks/steven_pinker_on_the_myth_of_violen...

You should make a conscious effort to see this. Otherwise you're going to begin to believe the amygdala-driven "what is the world coming to" type statements.

delinquentme··on You Are Going to Die
coping mechanism to accept death.
delinquentme··on You Are Going to Die
Thank you. I'm glad someone pointed this out.
delinquentme··on You Are Going to Die
Life-extension as the pursuit of the every-man: " The mortality rate is holding at a scandalous 100 percent. "

What are YOU doing?

delinquentme··on OpSci: Against close-source publishing
This seems like a timely subject. I've not the guts to take this as far as other individuals, however this code base will get you as close to these locked down papers as is legal without a subscription, including the referrer links to the paywall routing. And Proof: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtOqyz8P_fJ0dHN...
delinquentme··on Proposition HN: I will pay $8000 for you to build your side-project/MVP
"I'll take over and spend an additional $3000 to acquire enough users/customers for us to evaluate the project's likelihood of success."

... So if selected you're taking over the branding and sales of said company? If so how is pricing settled on?

delinquentme··on How My Start-Up Failed
"My love affair with my product soon began to fade. The key chains would not come clean. No matter how much I scrubbed, they still felt as though a posse of banana slugs had just oozed over them."

Not a stanford chemist I take it?

delinquentme··on Why Are People More Scared of Facebook Violating Their Privacy than Washington?
Facebook we feel like we've got influence. Does anyone still believe that they have ANY say in what happens in the government?
delinquentme··on Making graphene with a DVD burner
Tell me more about this! I'm no chemistry major but I'm wondering how it went?
delinquentme··on The Fight
> Death is unexpected and unwelcome. And completely inevitable.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

delinquentme··on Why is Linux more popular than BSD?
> pedantic, overzealous admin

nailed it.

delinquentme··on Why is Linux more popular than BSD?
This might be off-topic but: Would a single operating system been a more productive use of developer time? ( I'm looking at this from the standpoint of someone whos building embedded systems upon open source )
delinquentme··on [dead]
An interesting thing that you mention the funding model... Apparently this is a modified virus which already exists WITHIN humans. And as the telegraph article states, it seems the concept is just too simple to work. However the scientific community seems to feel differently.
delinquentme··on [dead]
I completely agree that major sources of funding should be tapped for this. However being that the VISIONARY behind apple is no longer with us because of this very real and very specific cancer ... I mean is this not tailor-made??
delinquentme··on [dead]
The thing is to look at science as an antagonist to "pop culture" is a reductionist mindset. And would it be rather poetic as well as great market savvy for them to sponsor something like this?
delinquentme··on [dead]
This would fall under the category of " Watching your own ass "

... Did he not have a private jet on standby at all times in order to land his liver?

delinquentme··on Ask HN: How would you add transparency to the dating market?
For me personally I'd like to see something that would facilitate a date... something that the girl could creep all my information and then instead of the tedious dance of "courtship" its just " Okay, I like you so we're going to do X "
delinquentme··on This white powder will kill me one day
Sensationalist headlines! YAY!

And seriously if your head feels disconnected without tea... you could probably use some exercise.

delinquentme··on Cable lacing on the Curiosity rover
Can I get an explanation as to how the OP is making the claim that these are IN FACT these kind of knots? I mean I cannot see how this image is of sufficient resolution to support this.
delinquentme··on Innocent man jailed for 8 months after DNA match
sounds like someone couldn't read a gel electrophoresis ? How long did they run the gel for ? Accuracy can be increased in a read with a longer gel ... Were they using some 4" gel ? There are tons of variables. And as stated in the article some of them aren't even running the right tests.
delinquentme··on On Living Below Your Potential
I love how this is written... Kinda wish there was an extension to it. Perhaps a meditation on where / how to move forward. Perhaps a wild fancy?
delinquentme··on A Redditor about the problem with today's Silicon Valley startup community
I like this part: "And so you have a whole generation of people building startups who have been taught to make bullshit."
delinquentme··on Possible solution to PG's frighteningly ambitious idea for email overload
" billion dollar frighteningly ambitious idea " ... solved with an assistant? Graham likes it because he groks email related services.
delinquentme··on OpSci: URIs, indexes and RSS for 72 closed-source publishers and scraper code.
It gets to the journals ... Perhaps you're right ... the abstracts would be plainly available as well as valuable.
delinquentme··on OpSci: URIs, indexes and RSS for 72 closed-source publishers and scraper code.
Its your tax dollars that someone else has locked up. Why don't you tell me.
delinquentme··on OpSci: URIs, indexes and RSS for 72 closed-source publishers and scraper code.
Its basically a 1-shot index of as much information as one can LEGALLY currently index.
delinquentme··on OpSci: URIs, indexes and RSS for 72 closed-source publishers and scraper code.
So one is clearly somewhat legal grey area, while what is here is a little more legal. Perhaps someone will take this library and put it to good use to topple that tower =]

OH! Good call! Just uploaded a few edits to the Readme. Note: You'll need bundler installed

delinquentme··on OpSci: URIs, indexes and RSS for 72 closed-source publishers and scraper code.
It should be noted that this only indexes the journals and does not scrape the research PDFs themselves.
delinquentme··on Scientists trace a wiring plan for entire mouse brain
> The title of the paper?

We've actually got researchers on Hacker News?
