del_operator··on A Hole in the Head: A History of Trepanation
Sawbones podcast always signs off with “don’t drill a hole in your head.” Seems like a decent suggestion.
del_operator··on Avoid buying in HOA neighborhoods (2014)
Here in South Texas the lawns were getting real loud when we bought our first home in December, so I think I was more willing to enter a social contract that was mostly hands off and had some limits on signage. We looked at many communities without HOAs and ultimately the location of our home was a big draw.
del_operator··on Avoid buying in HOA neighborhoods (2014)
True, I tried to do some research on how invasive they were before buying. The community looked great and our agenda usually just focuses on improving park/street lighting, clean up from storms, and street crack and seal.
del_operator··on Avoid buying in HOA neighborhoods (2014)
Oh dang, I really like my HOA. I don’t hear much from them and it’s only $250 twice a year. However, it’s been helpful in rare cases where our neighbor had obnoxious election signs up til after February 2020. They are also helpful for managing the roads and nudging the community to install fiber.

Yeah, possible like the chance of hitting a rational on the real line with a dart — dense jokes of measure zero.

I’ve heard similar things with Lithium isotopes being differentiated by the brain?

del_operator··on Renaming Coq
Reminds of Bro Lang changing to Zeek. Not clear on the reasons for the change but I think there’s some overlapping concerns

And drawing on my one semester of Latin from Wheelock just for fun here:

Pretty sure I encountered this on my Raspberry Pi 4 with WiFi and USB 3 devices. I don’t have a link to the forum, but I thought I remembered a discussion
del_operator··on Ketchup is a non-Newtonian fluid
Yeah, I kept doing that for my copper pots once a month with different things: ketchup, bar keepers friend, etc. It was never an easy wipe away experience like I imagined.
del_operator··on Satellite imagery shows Northern California kelp forests have collapsed
I worked in Orange County in college on a project to restore the White Sea Bass after the kelp forests were restored there. I really appreciated that experience in aquarium sciences and oceanography. I also liked seeing how much fisherman seemed onboard with the program.

I hope a network of volunteers in Northern California can have some success rebuilding the kelp ecosystem.

Time to call Nancy Caruso.
del_operator··on Girls perform better academically in almost all countries (2015)
Interesting, I wonder how skewed my perspective of high school was by finding a community college high school hybrid program that gave me freedom and access to better electives. It didn’t hurt that community college tutoring was a huge bonus: provided hours of free tutoring per course and then rewarded with opportunities to get paid tutoring the subject if I did well. Meeting older community college students through tutoring was also very formative. Tutoring money as a 15/16 year old helped my independence and motivation.

Meanwhile, I could have easily dropped out, parents even suggested I could given the strain of me getting me to school freshman year similar male peers did at 13/14, so just I lived with friends and couch surfed through all of HS. As a youngster though I did not show much academic connection and was suspended each week in a charter school, failing 2nd grade, but never going to 4th grade after switching schools. After a parent teacher conference where my mom embarrassingly tried to fight my teacher I realized things might go easier if I took time after school or during lunch to just wrap up my homework. Through middle school the boys and girls club created an atmosphere where I could continue that behavior and get access to computers and printers for written assignments. It was still a hassle though. Without a few key teachers in middle school I probably also wouldn’t have kicked a bad habit of ditching school.

Spent a few too many moments reading and anticipating how these rainforest rocks ended up for sale on Amazon.

del_operator··on Google Coral Dev Board mini SBC is now available for $100
I like the that my pi’s all have usb 3 ports and 8gb of RAM.

It was also pretty easy to setup K3s and work through any issues thanks to the Pi community activity.

I created a raspberry pi cluster with the usb coral sticks and some ssds. Coral sticks do get pretty hot. I wonder how this will do.
del_operator··on Raspberry Pi 4 can finally boot directly from USB
Been using my Pi 4 8GB with K3s and found it to already be quite enjoyable. I’ve seen some odd things being new to the Pi. I started off with the full desktop raspberry os and saw my usb storage devices weren’t mounted when I did not connect my a monitor or set a default resolution in rasp config.
del_operator··on Vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 mortality [pdf]
I’ve heard people talk in other offline conversations about COVID-19 induced hyper-coagulability. How much did that play a role in these cases?

del_operator··on Some popular self help books
I don’t know how much self help it might be considered, but reading about reinforcement learning was quite a valuable perspective. Now I reflect a bit more on my own value functions and how I can possibly communicate them effectively.

del_operator··on Calculus Made Easy (1914) [pdf]
I remember entering high school and picking up this book from the library in 9th grade. It was honestly not my favorite. It being called “Calculus Made Easy” had me feeling frustrated. I went to put it back and there was a book next to it called Calculus and Pizza. Within the introduction I got the intuitive feel for differentials and limits. I was able to play with the difference formula and take a much more enthusiastic high level trip through both differential and integral calculus. A big bonus was Calculus and Pizza allowed me to check my algebra in the back of the book and forward those questions to my algebra teacher. That was a few years before I was able to officially take calculus, so I kept re-reading chapters because they were fun.

A book with an easy approach really needs to make the chapters super easy to restart and spiral through concepts. Stories and characters didn’t hurt to have too though.
