deknos··on Without Systemd
> Obviously, no self respecting FOSSer is going to sabotage alternatives actively,

is that so? i do not have the same impression. everything is now built depending on systemd. i worry about that sometimes, though i also prefer systemd..

therefore i have hope for initware which/who want to export some of the stuff to other systems.

also i worked with environments (embedded and also router "things"), where systemd is indeed overblown... but that are nisches. i just hope we do not overcomplicate things for the nisches.. 80% or more (but less then 96%) profit from systemd.

back then unix and opensource managed all the cases, today it looks like it only manages the maincases..

deknos··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Unreal Tournament 2004 opensource rewrite, where i can load into the maps from the original.

the orignal linux binaries crash on current linux distributions :(

deknos··on History of 127/8 as localhost/loopback addresses (2021)
i would LOVE it, if there was some project which would test popular appliances and linux at home, if v6(only) presents any problems...
deknos··on Firefox appears to be flagged as suspicious by Cloudflare
i do not experience as much as your pre-poster, but i also experience it. "just use chrome"
deknos··on Home Made TPM2.0 Module
at this point it feels more important to have an working tpm emulator like swtpm in all major linux distributions as a package so we can play freely with it until we all understand it.

that said: cool project.

deknos··on The Librarians Are Not Okay
You know, i support that you are able to say that. But i have also the right to say that bit:

You are an idiot.

deknos··on Public Money, Public Code
besides the three you named: lobbying and corruption i think
deknos··on Deutsche Bank whistleblower found dead in LA's Lincoln Park
i don't want to attack the person, but calling the death of a person, if it would be a murder/assasination, foulplay makes me sad in any case, even if it was not a murder and it was selfimposed.

that guy in the park surely had other goals in his live most of the time than dying in a park.

i hope he can rest in piece.

deknos··on Abcdesktop – a cloud native desktopless system
What's the advantage as with guacamole and/or spice?
deknos··on Richard Stallman – The state of the Free Software movement
you laugh until you get old and the games of your youth do not work anymore because of missing libraries on linux, if there was a linux port.

i am missing my unreal tournament days and would even pay money, if one would build an opensource clone where i could load the original maps of Unreal tournament and UT2004 into the game like with Command & Conquer: Red alert.

(UT2004 crashes randomly on linux and it's always a hassle with the 32bit libs)

deknos··on Show HN: "q", a DNS query tool with support for UDP, TCP, DoT, DoH, DoQ and ODoH
can you PLEASE use a longer word? this is hard to google and bad in an environment. everyone can abbreviate it with their shell if they want to.

at least the go people started calling the language golang. for heavens sake.

deknos··on Debian still having trouble with merged /usr
on the other side, debian is one of the most stable platforms, more than even commercial ones (binary compatible centos is just a blink in the lifetime of debian for example :D) .

just because people care about the technology...

and upgrading is important for small business with less money. and this shows how hard it is to achive an good upgrade path.

deknos··on The Delusions of Debian
and in other news, some new opinions from the peanut gallery.

i am not involved in the debian project, but there seem to be quite a lot of people who know "what's best". Funnily most of them are not involved in building the stuff. and he shits on reddit comments but also does quite the same. i guess it's because they did not share his opinion.

deknos··on Designing a REST API: Unix Time vs. ISO-8601 (2013)
unixtime/microseconds is not necessarily a acute reflection for you to say what i year/month/day/hour/minute/second i am experiencing from an societal standpoint.

and that is important in realworld applications.

deknos··on Designing a REST API: Unix Time vs. ISO-8601 (2013)
also, unixtime just describes the time till the start of measurement of the time. it does not describe the organisatorial/socetial defined time which i currently "experience". like, leap years, timezones, sommertime or not, the new global dictator which will emerge in 500 years which defines the time beginning with his birth
deknos··on Show HN: GUI Applications in Podman on Wayland
well, building stuff with flatpak is not THAT intuitive. no package format before docker was from my point of view. on the other side, packaging also cleans up and docker-insides often are not cleaned up :D
deknos··on Show HN: GUI Applications in Podman on Wayland
This looks promising. Now you just have to find a way to tunnel/interface the xdg-standards and you can replace flatpak...
deknos··on Start Self Hosting
nobody is talking about the freedombox? https://freedombox.org/
deknos··on EU countries pledge to promote OSS within public administrations [pdf]
only marketing yadda yadda
deknos··on ntfs2btrfs: In-place conversion of NTFS filesystem to Btrfs
i also wonder, if there are parts of features of zfs/btrfs in other parts of fs systems... someone should build a comparison matrix :D
deknos··on Adding a “duress” password with PAM Duress (2021)
i wish the luks guys would also do this, but they denied the request back then.
deknos··on OpenSearch – open-source search and analytics based on Apache 2.0 Elasticsearch
and tbh it's enough for most of the people. and opensearch supports also OpenID/Oauth.
deknos··on Ask HN: How can we fix Wikipedia?
In Germany this was talked already over quite a few years ago.

Wikipedia would have to make it easy to clone parts of its websites to your own service so you can change the parts which are important to you. and then basically the most surfed-on-site wins.

but atm you either fetch the database and set it up with everything.. or .. no idea.

but nobody liked that model either.

we'd need wikipedia with more-git-like backend i think, some guy wrote "levitation" for that, but there would be still a need of setting it up as service and declare which parts are important for you and for which you redirect yourself from your service to the real wikipedia.

deknos··on Strange plant-like formation captured by Curiosity rover on Mars
electrical charges could create something like that.
deknos··on Podman 4.0
does podman now support nftables and does not create legacy iptables anymore?
deknos··on The Elite Hackers of the FSB
though that's always the problem with non-opensource-secret-intelligence information. we either trust the government/system/organization, or we do not.
deknos··on The right thing for the wrong reasons: FLOSS doesn't imply security
trust can be established otherwise, but with software it is extremely hard to notice that trust violation for closed source software
deknos··on The right thing for the wrong reasons: FLOSS doesn't imply security
with opensource you can do this. but with closed source like from microsoft, that is not automatically given.
deknos··on The right thing for the wrong reasons: FLOSS doesn't imply security
how can i compile microsofts code? and there are easily systems which are so complex if you compile them the wrong way, you get other behaviour or more bugs.

and it may be also human error, not a conspiracy theory. if you do not have the source code and the recipe to build it yourself than you can not guarantuee that the inspected sourcecode (which was given to you either by disk or by a datablob over the internet) is the binary which you are currently running on your windows.

hell, perhaps they shipped an update which broke an security measure, and the update was shipped after you inspected the source.

deknos··on The right thing for the wrong reasons: FLOSS doesn't imply security
> Just having access to the code is enough for audits, regardless of the license.

No. who guarantuees that the code is the one, which is compiled to the binary you are running?
