deivid··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024)
Hey! I feel like I would be a good fit but unfortunately did not pass the CV filter a few months ago, send me an email if you are interested in chatting.
deivid··on How to unit test code that depends on time
libfaketime's awkward interface (control via timestamp files, needing LD_PRELOAD) is why I wrote an experimental library[0] which takes over the clock at the process level.

My library modifies the code for the time-related vDSO functions, which is incredibly sketchy yet effective. There are also Python bindings at [1].

Why not use something like shiv[0]? You can bundle all your dependencies into one file and distribute that.

I'm not sure I understand, everyone is allowed to apply. The position requires relocating to Amsterdam. If you think something went wrong, shoot me an email (profile) and I'll get it reviewed

Optiver | SRE / Infrastructure engineer / Platform engineer / Linux engineer | Amsterdam, Netherlands | Full Time | €175-275k | https://optiver.reallinks.io/r/11JZizRQ

Optiver is a leading trading firm driven by technology with over one thousand employees globally. We pioneer our own trading strategies and systems using clean code and sophisticated technology, running a global network with thousands of high-performance low-latency applications that solve problems in nanoseconds.

Our Linux Team ensures our trading servers work so we can trade. They establish that our production environment works optimally by deploying, maintaining, monitoring and operating a fleet of UNIX servers to its highest possible performance.

---

In a nutshell, we provide, install and maintain over 2000 physical servers on 17 colocations, and debug tricky issues that pop up when you are pushing the limits of compute & networking.

You'd be working on squeezing the last bit of performance out of bare-metal servers (with fancy equipment to measure microsecond/nanosecond variation) and on the other hand, making our provisioning at all layers of the stack (Python, Django, Postgres, Prometheus) smoother and easier to use.

We provide relocation assistance and visa sponsorship in the Netherlands.

Apply at https://optiver.reallinks.io/r/11JZizRQ

We also look for:

- SREs: https://optiver.reallinks.io/r/VEPmiaez

- Network Engineers: https://optiver.reallinks.io/r/11XXHzRQ

deivid··on Gyroflow: An open source advanced gyro-based video stabilization tool
It looks cool, though I still find myself looking for Hyperlapse[0] alternatives. Hyperlapse seemed like magic when announced, particularly, not needing to crop large parts of shaky videos

deivid··on Implement DNS in a Weekend
Cool! I'd implemented a very low quality DNS server in rust to solve a hackattic challenge

https://github.com/DavidVentura/hackattic/blob/master/src/se...

It'll be interesting to see if the server implementation is complete enough to work with this client

deivid··on Reliability: It’s not great
I'm a bit sour reading this. I've always liked fly and particularly the engineering blog, so much so that a couple of months ago I decided to apply for an infra position, to work on some of these very topics. Sadly after 4~5 rounds of interviews (including a workday) they just ghosted me.

deivid··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (August 2022)
A handheld, esp32-based implementation of the pico-8[0] console. Basics work already, sidetracked into writing a terrible Lua to C++ compiler to squeeze some extra performance out of some pathological-case games.

Lives at https://github.com/davidventura/picopico

Just in case you are unaware, take a look at shiv: https://github.com/linkedin/shiv which does this quite neatly
deivid··on Show HN: I built a handheld CHIP-8 game console to teach myself embedded systems
This looks excellent! I'll definitely try to learn a bit of what you've done

I'm making a similar project; a handheld Pico-8 console: https://github.com/DavidVentura/PicoPico/ although currently I'm stuck in the process of writing a half-working Lua-to-C++ compiler

deivid··on Learning Go as a Python Developer: The Good and the Bad
The easiest way to do this is to use shiv[0] if you don't mind asking people to have Python itself installed; if you want a truly "one file bundle" you should use PyInstaller[1] (which bundles a Python interpreter)

deivid··on Oxide builds servers as they should be [audio]
I wrote down the kernel of the idea quite a while ago here[0], however, the actual version we run nowadays is using UEFI and written in Go (installer) + Python (API that generates the ISO on demand)

Fly.io[1] also does this (although they boot the result in a VM, the concepts are the same)

deivid··on Oxide builds servers as they should be [audio]
I have put our implementation of _exactly_ this in production last week.

Boot a "CD-ROM" via IPMI into a custom installer, flash image (generated from a Dockerfile!) to disk, reboot. Install takes ~15 seconds, full process (going via POST once) takes ~4 minutes. This also allows us to have a "hardware validation" image (that one doesn't get persisted to disk).

Not sure if there's any plans to make it public right now, but I'll ask around. Feel free to contact me via email (in profile)

deivid··on Making fifty TIC-80 carts in a weekend
Sure! Feel free to message me in github or via email.

I've abandoned my Pico8 on RP2040 port though, a lot of games simply need more memory than there's available. There's this crazy guy: https://github.com/yocto-8/yocto-8/blob/main/doc/extmem.md that managed to get external RAM over SPI working (RP2040 does not support memory remapping)

On ESP32 with SPIRAM (/PSRAM) Pico8 is definitely achievable, and _most_ games will run at a playable frame rate, but some won't; as an example "Rockets!", does too many calculations per frame to run smoothly, and the Lua overhead starts showing so I'm exploring ideas like an optimizing compiler that can run off-console, etc.

I don't thing TIC-80 will be doable, the constraints are significantly more relaxed. A Pico8 framebuffer is 32KB; in TIC-80 it is 64KB (and this doubles with buffering/DMA) but most importantly, code is no longer something simple like Lua

deivid··on Making fifty TIC-80 carts in a weekend
I saw Pico8 a while ago and really liked it! Now I'm trying to make it "real", by creating a physical console that implements the API: https://github.com/DavidVentura/PicoPico

It's heavily incomplete, but it runs "Celeste" on an ESP32. Some small games also run in the Raspberry Pico (RP2040), but it does not have enough RAM for medium-large games.
