degun··on The EU moves to kill infinite scrolling
I wholeheartedly agree with this.
degun··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
The offer a way to build custom components that you can use everywhere, on every frontend framework, or plain html page. That's something that can't be achieved with any other tool. Also, if you use the Lit framework to build web components, @property and @state are reactive. The DOM part that uses those variables updates by itself.
degun··on Why English doesn't use accents
The explanation you gave is already contained in the cited Wikipedia article. I think this "ghoti" example is more of a tongue-in-cheek mocking of pronunciation inconsistencies. If you want a jarring example, consider laughter and slaughter. I know, i know, they have different origins, but still, it confuses foreigners like me while learning the language.
degun··on A non-anthropomorphized view of LLMs
This was the same idea that crossed my mind while reading the article. It seems far too naive to think that because LLMs have no will of their own, there will be no harmful consequences on the real world. This is exactly where ethics comes to play.
degun··on The Interactive Handbook on Data Structures and Algorithms
I'm not the author, but this is brilliant work!
degun··on Digital Echoes and Unquiet Minds
I wonder if this is why BlackBerry phones (best ones ever made) went extinct. Because the media used to grab attention more aggressively, images and short videos essentially, are better experienced on a bigger screen. That's why there are no more iPhone minis. It's either convenient for Big Tech to keep us engaged to that type of media, or just simply user preference. Guess I'll never know, but I do miss smaller phones, and especially a physical keyboard.
degun··on Extracting content from an LCP “protected” ePub
What do you suggest as a better solution to a. give people the possibility to buy electronic books, while avoiding that the publishers and authors risk losing their intellectual property b. give libraries the possibility to lend ebooks fairly? This is a genuine question. Are there better solutions than DRMs? Is Apple, Adobe or Amazon dealing with this better?
degun··on Ask HN: DRM alternatives for ebooks/audiobooks
I get this, but what I want to do is prevent unauthorised access altogether. Watermarks help if I want to sue someone after they've gained access to the information.
degun··on Bouncing Beholder, my winning JS1K entry (2012)
Also, the author of "Eloquent JavaScript", the book from which I learned the language. Endless respect for Marijn.
degun··on LG at CES 2024: First 4K Wireless transparent TV
LG SIGNATURE OLED T, the world’s first 77-inch 4K wireless, transparent TV!

The LG SIGNATURE OLED T is a true technological marvel, combining a transparent 4K OLED screen and LG’s wireless video and audio transmission technology to transform the screen experience in ways that have never been possible before.

The OLED T is the winner of five CES 2024 Innovation Awards, including a Best of Innovation honor.

degun··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
Same on my browser and system: Safari on iOS.
degun··on Eloquent JavaScript 4th edition (2024)
This is what really taught me JavaScript.
degun··on Open-sourcing our progress on Tailwind CSS v4.0
Can you not keep your files in some sort of order?
degun··on Hetzner switches to new billing model
What a beautiful company.
degun··on CSS Is Logical
CSS gets the impression of being illogical, because it’s a bit more complex than it looks. At first, it looks so simple that you think you know all there is to know about it by the first week or so. You think that you can infer what a said instruction will do, just by its nam. But to actually get a hold of it, you have to learn all the concepts that are listed in the article, otherwise you can get easily frustrated.
degun··on Bun v0.7.0
Am I misinterpreting or does it sound a bit arrogant as a response?
degun··on Ask HN: Have you learned a language to read a book in its original language?
No, but I get the sentiment. I wanted to learn Spanish to read Borges and Cortazar. I gave it a try anyway and read Casa tomada by Cortazar. Understood most of it, because I know Italian, but it’s not tha same thing as knowing the language. I’m glad I know Italian, so I can read Calvino and Buzzati in their original language.
degun··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
I’m having conversations with ChatGPT 4. Since my framework of choice has always bern Django, I’m asking how to do this in Go, and how to do that in Go. Also this https://go.dev/tour .
degun··on Countries that will suffer the most temperature change from global warming
Should it?
degun··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
I’m learning Go to build a small backend for a rhyme dictionary in my language.
degun··on Look ma, no React: I recoded my portfolio site with vanilla everything
You can achieve very good results with Next, by using SSG, SSR and ISR. That implies being very comfortable with React. Otherwise there’s tons of solutions for a blog scrnario.
degun··on New emojis in 2023-2024
The only emojis that I loved to use and seemed to me like conveying real emotions were the BBM ones. Top tier!
degun··on Look ma, no React: I recoded my portfolio site with vanilla everything
Jumping on the React hate train has become a trend these days, but it still has its place.
degun··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
It has prevented it to a certain degree. If don’t have the know-how, you can’t find the book you’re after. And I know very few people that actually know where to find for free the book they want to read. Anyway, my poin was: if this solution isn’t working, or looks unfair, how are we going to solve it differently?
degun··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
Well, it’s not that big of a mistery actually, even less a psychological manipulation to increase revenues. If I completely own an e-book, I can duplicate it, quadruplicate it, post it online for 10000 people to have it for free. And this would bring the company just the 3$ that I gave to them. If you want to live in the olden days, buy the hard copy, share it with a friend, donate it to a library. Nothing has changed there.
degun··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
This is the stuff of nightmares. I tried to create a voice based on Jorge Luis Borges. I generated a voice and then a sample from a text and it sounded like a haunted spirit coming to collect my soul.

Alas, there is no stopping now.

degun··on The End of Front-End Development
Never read such a long list of inaccurate statements here on Hacker News.
degun··on Ask HN: What companies are embracing “HTML over the wire”?
The behaviour seems very similar to the Astro framework.
degun··on Wikipedia Gets a Fresh New Look
Felt like a breath of fresh air to me. Design choices that make sense.
degun··on Ask HN: Tools you have built for yourself?
I translate children’s books in my spare time. One time, I got a little book called “The Wonky Donkey”, in which all the rhymes rhyme exclusively with the word “donkey”. The task here was to find the appropriate rhyme to my native language’s equivalent of “donkey” (gomar), while at the same time retaining the original meaning. So I built a tool to find all the rhymes to a given word.
