This is my experience also. VLC does work as it has its own HEVC
deeth_starr_v··on Did you lose your AirPods?
Can’t you just turn off Bluetooth easily via Control Center? Top left Bluetooth symbol
deeth_starr_v··on NASA is about to make its most important safety decision in nearly a generation
In Carrying the Fire, in pre Apollo days when they did manual burns for re-entry, this was described as a big worry (burn sending you off into space). But maybe that was mitigated
deeth_starr_v··on MacBook app generated $100k in seven days, now Stripe won't pay up
> dirty deeds

Can you elaborate? On the fart of Stripe?

deeth_starr_v··on China is stockpiling – we must do the same
Seems like you are presenting a false choice. China has clearly stated its intention to compete and overtake the US as a core power. If the US is able to build and maintain strategic partnerships and military deterrence then that ascension of China would be less risky. I disagree with your whole premise of competition as “brutal suppression”. The most likely outcome of the trade war is that China will eventually have its own chip industries that are on par or more advanced then the US.

deeth_starr_v··on Neanderthals and humans interbred 47k years ago for 7k years, research suggests
I’m not sure why you think Neanderthals were much more solitary. It sounds like tribe size was smaller than Sapiens but they originally had really wide distribution. It sounds like Sapiens out competed Neanderthals with tool use
deeth_starr_v··on How did Facebook intercept their competitor's encrypted mobile app traffic?
Yeah, if your first thought is “Is you taking notes on a criminal conspiracy?” … you are not learning the right lessons
deeth_starr_v··on Boeing to plead guilty to criminal fraud charge stemming from 737 MAX crashes
From the article: Paul Cassell, a lawyer for victims’ family members, said he plans to ask the federal judge on the case to reject the deal and “simply set the matter for a public trial, so that all the facts surrounding the case will be aired in a fair and open forum before a jury.”

Hard to disagree

deeth_starr_v··on DOJ to offer Boeing "sweetheart" plea deal in pursuit of criminal charges
I was just noticing that also. Institutional investors own a lot of the stock and probably know it's too big to fail.
deeth_starr_v··on DOJ to offer Boeing "sweetheart" plea deal in pursuit of criminal charges
Seems like it would be better to go to trial even if they are not convinced the jury will convict. It's in the publics interest to have all the information out there instead of swept under the rug

Mpegstreamclip used to do similar on macOS but is not compatible with modern Mac’s
deeth_starr_v··on Ask HN: Could AI be a dot com sized bubble?
Not in my experience. LLMs are nowhere near replacing a junior dev. Maybe you can have a junior dev fix their bug ridden garbage responses but that's not replacing them.

It's possible this may be true in some domains now, but not in any I work in

I haven’t seen that. My session persists with Tailscale when I’m roaming on my iPhone hotspot to the next day when I am on home WiFi. Only lost a few % overnight on my M1.

deeth_starr_v··on German public broadcasters open source their streaming platforms
The Hulu app does this on LG TV also. Public and private sectors are the same sometimes
deeth_starr_v··on Ask HN: How to manage phones and PCs for elderly parents?
I feel for them. I've got a backup image of wife's parents macbook air and ipad that I've had to use a few times. I was using remote desktop software but they once clicked a fullscreen "Your Computer is Infected" ad and followed "Apple Support's" instructions to download a new RD app and give them full control. Luckily the give full control dialog got lost behind the web scam fullscreen. I got rid of remote desktop apps and told them to never allow remote desktop apps again. I've come to the conclusion that any sort of banking or account tied to money is too much of a risk.

Or even an IC that is new to setting up infra and so they relish it. Do it a couple of times and you start appreciating managed solutions
deeth_starr_v··on Cindy Lee might be the future of music
I like it … but seems weird pitchfork fires all its staff and now we get a unicorn review. I’ll listen again tomorrow
deeth_starr_v··on Intel's 14A Magic Bullet: Directed Self-Assembly (DSA)
Agreed. Intel has pulled some amazing rabbits out of their hat over the years when they fell behind. I want to believe. If they pull it off this will be an amazing reinvention. But we have to be honest the smart money is probably on Intel being fabless when 18A and 14A drags on and they need to rely on TSMC
deeth_starr_v··on Show HN: My $1k self-install, off-grid solar backup build for renters
This reminds me of the time when I built a battery stereo power amplifier and then only used it a few times because I didn’t want to risk burning the apartment complex down. It was fun building it though.
