deepzn··on Update on Sharing
Netflix once had an advantage, mostly tech and UI based, as well as network effects. I feel all of it has subsided. They did well to weather the studios and networks pulling their content into their own services. While deciding to invest in original content early, they built a pretty decent library, but they're still way behind with other networks who have 50+ years of content.

While their focus now to cover the breadth of programming like cable as opposed to quality content, means they will likely stay where they are (lose selective subs, and gain cable subs) but just not as an emerging tech co. with new ideas that was once the N in FANG, but just as a legacy media network, while their consumers have a wealth of choices fighting for their time including social, gaming, real world events, etc.

deepzn··on Update on Sharing
Even if I could purchase it I wouldn't. Haven't watched anything on Netflix in 3 or 4 months even with a sharing membership. Youtube Premium is where I spend most of my time, and get the most out of.
deepzn··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
I've only seen 2 comments about Tesla on this thread. But, it seems people underestimate Tesla on here (I'm not the biggest fan). Though they are having great progress in their FSD beta- one way to mark this is by the number of users with access to it, which has increased significantly. This allows them to collect a lot more real world data then their competitors. Once this gets better and is able to prove better driving than a human, which seems possible in certain metros at least as Waymo is doing, then they can do an autonomous Uber network of their Teslas.

But I think this is a smart move to join forces, and will give the consumer healthy competition in this space.

deepzn··on Almost 200k Job Cuts in Tech Pushes New Grads to Wall Street
Software differentiated itself from hardware by means of scale. And then the profits accumulated by said companies created higher wages in those roles. And tech kept booming, and expanding throughout the last 10 or 15 years.

Until supply meets demand, this will continue but I guess the trend is abating or maybe it's just the possible recession for now. Though in the future it will be a mix of incumbents plugging all the vertical holes plus LLMs offering a horizontal suite of products, and then the market calibrating to the new supply.

Eventually though, it feels like majority of the knowledge jobs will be replaced and there would be the need for whole new tier of jobs, and hobbies that people pursue, with a UBI floor.

deepzn··on Almost 200k Job Cuts in Tech Pushes New Grads to Wall Street
We could go even further back to the late 90's and the official launch of the Internet, where you see the more people believing in this. When Bill Gates was officially the richest man in the world. But, I think with every cycle, you got more believers. Google in 2003-06, along with Facebook. In 2007-09 with the iPhone disrupting the phone industry, that became a big thing. And early 2010's with the rise of the apps - Airbnb, Uber, etc.

I feel we hit a crescendo with the post pandemic bubble and fed pumping money, that's when tech usage globally was of course at it's highest, but also like the sheer number of people using it everyday was massive(maybe 50-75%+ of the world). And it arguably "ate" or saved the world during the pandemic. It's fascinating, and now we're entering another cycle maybe after a brief respite, with LLMs.

deepzn··on Almost 200k Job Cuts in Tech Pushes New Grads to Wall Street
I think it's also recalibrating the different types of jobs. The type that tech has accumulated in excess over the last 5 years especially and even longer in the biggest companies are the product and middle managers, Marketing/Strategy/HR/Sales folks.

deepzn··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
I really enjoyed reading other posts from your blogs as well - https://www.engineersneedart.com/blog/interview/interview.ht...

I have bookmarked many tech blogs, but find it hard to get the time to read or catch up with them. There are so many interesting stories out there. I hope to collect as many cool stories throughout my life and career.

deepzn··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
There are many interpretations and meanings of this Japanese phrase called Ikigai but in a basic sense it means "life purpose". Doing something you love, and getting better each day at it is one interpretation I really like. Many people in professions involving workmanship can attest to this.

This coming age of AI is really going to displace a lot of jobs, and make a lot of people unhappy- those who found meaning in their work. But, I feel we need to keep our joy of doing our work, and have that be the driving force, even if a computer can do something better. And this is what they say will be the "artisanal" things that will exist, and be popular to buy.

In the end, I think we just need to enjoy what we do. That's all this life is about.

This was actually life, as in biological life.
deepzn··on I lived in LA and commuted to Berkeley by plane to save on rent
Yeah, the crazy part was the flying. But, people commute long distances for work or school all the time to save money on rents, especially all major cities. Having better subways definitely helps. For e.g. in NYC, where many commute from Jersey, or Long Island.
deepzn··on I lived in LA and commuted to Berkeley by plane to save on rent
The point is it wouldn't apply to most people without points. And the point they were trying to prove in the post is it was possible for others.

Also they used a lot of miles. So real $ cost would be higher.
deepzn··on One man's rare Alzheimer’s mutation delayed its onset
Yes, this too. This one though appears to have some side effects of brain swelling as mentioned in the article.

Though the one announced in 2021 made the headlines and appeared to be more of a success than it was. You could say a new drug being approved after 20 years is still a relative success (it does have some statistically significant results which led it to being approved).

deepzn··on One man's rare Alzheimer’s mutation delayed its onset
Yes these anti-amyloid drugs announced recently. I wasn't aware of the controversy. Hopefully, this period is the start of more fruitful discoveries.
deepzn··on One man's rare Alzheimer’s mutation delayed its onset
I didn't read earlier about the backlash, but yes, I was talking about these-https://www.bbc.com/news/health-63749586

But I see there are side effects as well (Thanks for pointing it out) -https://www.axios.com/2023/05/15/alzheimers-drugs-patients-r... -https://www.science.org/content/article/scientists-tie-third...

It's good then that we now have another solution to tackle this like mentioned in OP, such as targeting reelin or APOE. And if anti-amyloids, or reducing amyloids are only a part solution. Hopefully, the findings keep continuing to cure Alzheimers.

deepzn··on One man's rare Alzheimer’s mutation delayed its onset
With new drugs released in the past year for Alzheimers after more than 20 years. It's exciting that we may be beginning to understand this disease.

Also excited to see how LLM's and DL/AI can help accelerate research by reducing menial tasks for researchers and scientists as well as by contributing to drug discovery. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-05-scientists-ai-drug-al...

deepzn··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
Intuit has a $120 B market cap. And it is a monopoly. It's been rightly found misleading users to pay for services. I'd been deceived to pay for it my first year or so dealing with taxes, as I ended up entering all the information, and then being told I had to pay when it initially was advertising as free.

With ChatGPT models, we can perhaps have our own tax agent who can assist us -seems likely in the near future in any case. Also as other pointed out, the tax system is at fault, it should just be automatically done and billed by the IRS.

deepzn··on TikTok Feeds Teens a Diet of Darkness
Agreed. TikTok in the wild without developing a curated feed of normal Human interests, can keep recommending sickening videos. I've seen the animal cruelty videos you saw too.

Though, if you get out of the YT algorithm, for eg. in incognito mode, I've seen very poor recommendations as well. Like viral bait videos. But not like Tiktok.

deepzn··on UK Blocks Microsoft’s $69B Activision Deal
Probably consumers might benefit from concentration of gaming titles within Xbox for more seamless experiences. But, arguably very destructive in the long run. As this is a major INDEPENDENT studio, not only for multiplatform but also for deciding the titles/projects they produce.

As we see with the HBO Max/Discovery merger, once companies merge, they have the option to close or end projects, that is destructive to both consumers and the creators of those.

Furthermore, these are trillion dollar companies, that are almost getting if not already way past the size of "Too Big To Fail". These companies need to be reigned in, if we are trying to create mobility in the private sector, as well as consumer choice, and avoid monopolization currently already in tech.

deepzn··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
I use watch later for completing videos, but these are just I think may be interesting from the homepage, like seeing the title and background pic. I sometimes open multiple tabs for them.

One of things I found the coolest, was when I am watching a video, and if the video mentions for example some event that happened a while ago or a person being referenced, I would immediately search for that, and I would see it already recommended on the search bar.

Maybe lots of others have also done the same, and it recorded that as a meaningful suggestion. Or maybe it's standard ML techniques, or the new Transformer models diffused across Googles products I'm not sure but was noticing this even around 3 years ago.

deepzn··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
also being new to TikTok, I didn't realize scrolling up at first would refresh the queue of videos. And I would lose the vid being watched which was a bit terrifying to lose an interesting video.
deepzn··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
i had this happen to me. ive lost videos I wanted to see when i clicked one instead of another.

deepzn··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
oh wow exactly. When i go on incognito, im terrified at all the "viral" kinds of news, etc type of vids recommended to me.
