I see this as a good thing. If you can self-learn remotely at your own pace and then show up once for a brief proctored (and by extension trusted) exam, it’s still far cheaper and much more accessible than the traditional college or high school alternative.

That's where I heard of it too. Apparently this view is shared by others in government as well, as revealed in the Wikileaks diplomatic cable dump.

Allegedly France is also big on industrial espionage, but this doesn’t get as much press since they’re a key NATO ally:

deepdriver··on “Science must respect the dignity and rights of all humans”
It's trivially enforceable. Academic institutions have been absolutely ideologically and politically captured. The long march through not only the institutions, but especially the HR departments has achieved total victory.
deepdriver··on “Science must respect the dignity and rights of all humans”
Studies on heritable differences in intelligence are effectively banned in the West due to the overlap with genetics of ancestral continental populations, or what’s approximately known as race. Everyone who looks at the well-developed, consistently-replicated body of study here knows what is known and why it is politically unpalatable. East Asian countries do not have these self-imposed bans on scientific truth (these truths, anyway). They will do the research first, reap its rewards, and develop a permanent civilizational advantage. Designer babies are an irresistible competitive edge.

Ironic and sad, it’s precisely this research that could close today’s measured gaps.

As usual, trans activists have co-opted language of the gay rights movement (conversion therapy) to describe an altogether different situation:

If you care about kids, don’t ignore the growing body of evidence that suggests youth transition is overwhelmingly harmful. Don’t ignore stories like Chloe’s:

He did journalism at one time. He’s a been a violent partisan activist for a while now. I see he’s still making the podcast.

If you agree with Evans that burning police stations, courthouses, and condos with people inside is cool, as he and many others attempted in Portland for weeks in 2020, just say so. That’s actual violence, not whatever Internet trolls are doing on a message board.

This "care" is unnecessary and harmful for most children. Puberty is the cure for most children with body dysphoria; up to 90% of kids who identify as transgender desist from this identity post-puberty. However, effects from "gender-affirming care" like a deepened voice, mastectomy, orchiectomy, hysterectomy, and sterilization are irreversible. The long-term effects of puberty blockers especially are unknown, particularly as they affect adolescent brain development. That's without mentioning the usual risks of blood clots, osteoporosis, mood disorders, and cardiovascular events that can result from hormone treatment even in clinical settings.

In the UK, the Tavistock clinic for youth gender medicine was recently forced to shut over concerns for patient safety, and findings that staff were rushing children into procedures they later regretted:

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/sep/04/gender-ident...

The NHS-commissioned Cass Report details the many risks and gaps of evidence underlying youth transition:

https://cass.independent-review.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/0...

Former patients are now coming forward to tell how they were harmed:

https://www.persuasion.community/p/keira-bell-my-story

In the US, the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine is attempting to spread this knowledge among practitioners:

https://segm.org/

This issue is highly ideological and politicized on both sides. Suggesting medical transition for any minor is not currently supported by the evidence. National health systems like Sweden's have banned it outside clinical trials. Instructing minors to attempt it themselves without medical or psychological evaluation or monitoring is reckless in the extreme. Doing it for sexual gratification, as some are in Keffals' case, is monstrous.

Telling confused children how to buy hormones with Bitcoin, inject themselves without medical supervision, and hide it all from parents isn't praiseworthy.
deepdriver··on People are demanding that Cloudflare drop Kiwi Farms
That isn't how free speech or net neutrality works. Intimidating websites you don't like off the Internet, which is what Keffals et al are doing by trying to remove this site's DDoS protection so they can illegally force them offline, is corrosive to all types of online speech period. If KiwiFarms breaks the law, then by all means take down the website.

Secondarily, I don't see anyone else-- journalists, politicians, NGOs, anyone-- doing this kind of deep dive into the sort of online harm Keffals represents. Grooming young children into bathtub-gin sex changes behind the backs of parents and doctors is monstrous. If the only people documenting this are Internet trolls on KiwiFarms, all the more reason to defend their civil rights until the rest of society comes to its senses.

deepdriver··on People are demanding that Cloudflare drop Kiwi Farms
The implication is that Keffals and friends will DDoS the site out of existence, as they have apparently tried to do numerous times. This is of course criminal but goes unmentioned.

As an American from a non-immigrant family, I think stamping visas is easier than fixing a broken education system, so that’s what corporate leaders would rather do to fill seats. We have over 330 million Americans in this country, many seeking good jobs and salaries like those found in tech, yet we struggle to produce enough qualified STEM grads and resort to importing other countries’ elites. The programming and computer science education in most US high schools is near zero. It’s a national embarrassment. And frankly, the more US companies are helmed by new arrivals who retain strong ties to the mother country, the less they feel a kinship to the majority of Americans and the less likely they are to invest in those Americans’ futures. I’ve seen this preference play out firsthand inside Google and other places.

I expect disagreement from many who’d flip viewpoints if the shoe changed feet.

> Scott Cummings uses terms like "black invasion" to describe demographic changes in the neighborhood.

So what? That’s how the elderly people getting robbed, raped and murdered saw it. Does their suffering count for nothing?

Elder whites in Rosedale were specifically targeted for violence. The verbatim confessions of the perpetrators admit this. The crime data record this. The same pattern now repeats with elderly Asians. Whatever you think of the author, a committed liberal whose distaste for the racist speech of some interview subjects is palpable, the facts stand on their own.

If you want to talk statistics, the racial disparities in both inter- and intra-race violence remain even at comparable income levels. They are especially pronounced between blacks and Asians. It’s not necessary to speculate as to reasons in order to note that it’s true. Without acknowledging something’s happening, it cannot be addressed and is impossible to fix.

The lack of attention to anti-Asian violence relates to the identities of the perpetrators, as you know. These stories also fall out of the news much quicker than, for instance, the killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

The parent comment was highlighting anti-Asian hate attacks in the US. These attacks are overwhelmingly committed by Afro-American men. If you'd rather talk about ethnically-motivated mob attacks in Germany, there's no need to look as far as 30 years back:

I don't remember any war in 1992 in Romania. The social problems involving Roma people in Europe are well-documented, on the other hand.

deepdriver··on A bike tour of Dresden, the heart of Germany’s semiconductor industry
The primary historical sources contradict your opinion. Racism was a part of it, certainly. The other part and the reason for much of the racism was excessive violence and crime. Here’s another book from the era which documents this, note the top review:

>Of course caucasians would be a victim of ~90% of interracial crime, those are the general population demographics in most places that are not urban in the US.

Do you understand that this number includes urban areas?

>It'll be fun and games until you're the elderly Asian person whose skull has been bashed in.

German and European descendants have essentially nothing to do with this phenomenon. In fact, white elders were the primary targets of brutal rapes, assaults, murders, and home invasions by the same POC criminal groups before the US had a large Asian population. Such violence on the streets and in schools was the primary cause for white flight to the suburbs are rural areas. It was a series of decisions made from the exact perspective you’re describing. This view is generally not taught in US schools but is extensively documented in primary sources, such as “Left Behind in Rosedale:”

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2056992.Left_Behind_In_R...

And “Common Ground,” a book about the result of forced busing imposed on communities at literal gunpoint:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Ground_(Lukas_book)

European descendants remain victims in ~90% of interracial crime between these two groups today. Similar number for Asians, similar lack of media attention paid. Bet you never heard of the gang assault and murder of Ee Lee:

>So perhaps fascism doesn't fit perfectly, but it's pretty damn close in my opinion (especially if you use definition 3 by Wordnik "Oppressive, dictatorial control")

Few to none of the loudest users of “fascist” describe Cuba, Venezuela, or China with the term according this definition. Can only conclude the definition is given in bad faith, and used by people with a silent exception for “states and organizations I find ideologically appealing.”

They didn't, though. They had a bunch of telex machines that were old even at the time. The title of this link is hyperbole to serve an ideological agenda. It's Teen Vogue tech history.
deepdriver··on There were almost two internets. Then, the CIA destroyed one
Yes, and telex machines were nothing new in 1972. They were invented in Germany in the 1930s:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telex#Development

When you boil it down to the details, Project Cybersyn really wasn't much. A lot of old telex stations, one mainframe, untested hand-wavey ideas about economic control theory, and some very nice Star Trek armchairs.

deepdriver··on There were almost two internets. Then, the CIA destroyed one
My understanding is that the "network" was a manually-staffed telex operations room:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/290742382_Cyberneti...

>Serendipitously, we found a large number of spare telex machines in one of the state-owned enterprises. Their installation followed in plants and enterprises throughout the country, as well as in industrial committees, CORFO and other government offices. A telex room with tens of machines was installed at CORFO. In practice, it was an operations room for the state-owned industry that offered an incipient nervous system for the industrial economy; it was called Cybernet

The telex itself was not invented in Chile, but rather ironically in 1930s Germany:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telex#Development

deepdriver··on There were almost two internets. Then, the CIA destroyed one
This is a series of video essays about Chile's Project CyberSyn:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Cybersyn

Link title massively overreaches. Cybersyn was a few hundred telex machines, aka glorified telegraphs, and one computer that aggregated daily economic statistics. It was in no way comparable to ARPANET or the Internet. The project was an interesting yet abortive effort at top-down socialist economic management. Since it never had a chance to succeed or fail on its own merits, and also since it had a really swanky-looking operations room, it's been the subject of a boatload of techno-utopian projection. Here are reflections by someone who was directly involved:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/290742382_Cyberneti...

>The emphasis of these reflections is in contrasting its rather limited achievements with its vision and relevance for our societies today. Its claims were large; it was presented as a project that achieved important results in a short period of time. The paper compares its actuality with these claims.

This isn’t about unfortunate people’s access to transportation, it’s about unsanitary and unsafe abuse of the public transportation system, including public substance abuse and sleeping on the bus overnight.

>I think there are a lot of people who would have trouble with that knowing that person could be their own child, an ex, a parent, a friend, or themself

Every downward-spiraling addict has had parents, friends, and maybe children. How would they feel watching their loved one rot away on the street (or a bus) in the grip of addiction? It is inhumane to watch people shoot up heroin and drink themselves to death day after day in public spaces without intervention.
