deep-root··on CDC Reports 51% Increase in Suicide Attempts Among Teenage Girls
Not a theory, but additional info: female teenage suicide is one-third the rate of male in US[1], but typically grows faster per year.

deep-root··on CA to Pay Off All Past Due Rent Accrued During Covid, Giving Renters Clean Slate
I wonder if renters will know their back-rent was made whole, or if shady landlords could attempt to "double dip".
deep-root··on CA to Pay Off All Past Due Rent Accrued During Covid, Giving Renters Clean Slate
Seems like an especially poor way to get votes based on California demographics[1], and how divisive perceived "handouts" are politically.

Poverty-line renters are most likely pro-Newsome or unregistered, and too few Rep landlords to convert with this $Bn rent subsidy.

deep-root··on iPadOS 15: Hands-on with Apple’s Weather app for iPad
The Onion-like article's point is that iPadOS perplexingly does not include an Apple weather app. Or calculator app.

This may not be obvious at a quick glance.

deep-root··on Why we should end the data economy
Perhaps you'd like some privacy to surprise a significant other with your purchase, rather than it show up on their Venmo feed in real-time.
deep-root··on America has a drinking problem
All three links don't seem to conclusively support your comment and AA continues to be controversial for many reasons (e.g. adopting "alcoholic" as your identity). Quoting link #2:

"Mostly it [the new review] looks like studies of either sending people to AA or frequent counseling, and that yields similar results to other kinds of alcohol use disorder psychotherapies. That's what their main finding is," Saitz said. "And I, unfortunately, I don't think that tells us so much about AA effectiveness."

As an aside the average AA member attends 2.5 meetings a week and membership is 89% white[1], I had no idea. Where do non-white people get help in America?

deep-root··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is a brawny, battery-powered bargain
Would be great to get some controlled estimates. There are many anecdotal tests, YouTube videos, etc. Here[1] is a typical example where a Tesla Model Y tows two bikes and trailer (totaling 1000lbs/450kg) and the range drops to around 40% of normal.

deep-root··on Companies may be punished for paying ransoms to sanctioned hackers
You may be presenting a false choice: Even if you pay hackers off, there was still a data breach.
deep-root··on Apple-Epic judge asks why offering iOS users a choice is bad
From the article: "The question was in relation to Apple's App Store anti-steering policy, which forbids apps from telling iOS users that they can purchase virtual goods or subscriptions cheaper elsewhere. [US Judge] Gonzalez Rogers was questioning why allowing this to be conveyed to App Store customers would be bad..."

It's not so much about offering choice (implying the choice multiple app stores on iOS), as it is allowing users to be directed off iOS for purchases.

This judge does actually seem to be looking for middle-ground between the parties.

deep-root··on Bette Graham, inventor and founder of Liquid Paper
Hasn't it been ubiquitous worldwide for ~50 years, even amongst today's primary/grade schoolers?

I recall reading a recent article around paper sales being down but liquid paper sales remaining unusually strong. Wish I could find it.

Edit: Found the article in question https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/03/who-s...

deep-root··on Was cancer less likely in a pre-industrial world?
It's a bit of a myth that humans have only had long life in modern times. This is partially due to the calculated "life expectancy" of many eras including infant mortality where perhaps 30% of the population died at age 0.

If a quarter or half of your population is dying at age 0, then another quarter or half must likely be living into their 70s for the mean age to end up 35.

deep-root··on Samsung to jump into laptop processor market with Exynos chip in H2
AirTags were leaked via trademark in 2019.[1] Tile has been around since 2012.[2] Someone on HN said something about whistling in the 80s.[3] Who did it first?

deep-root··on Samsung to jump into laptop processor market with Exynos chip in H2
Perhaps they're referring to things Apple does that don't involve "doing it well", such as removing headphone jacks or USB power adapters, or adding the iPhone notch.

Samsung marketing team had field days on each of these moves, then the following release cycle their products did the same.

deep-root··on The nuclear option to opt out of tracking on iOS
This may be locked by your mobile service provider, or corporate policy if you have a managed device.

Some report success after resetting their network settings via Settings > General > Reset.

deep-root··on The nuclear option to opt out of tracking on iOS
This feature has been around for many years, previously known as "Limit Ad Tracking".[1] They may have changed how it works under the hood.

Apple could have disabled cross-app sharing of Apple user identifiers by default, but iOS 14.5 instead has per-app permissions.

deep-root··on Da Vinci – Overrated?
I regretfully clicked on this click bait... Are non-advertising interstitials on mobile becoming a thing? It feel unnatural to have the page loaded but locked for a few seconds.
deep-root··on AB2712 – California Universal Basic Income
Wikipedia has a list of various basic income pilot programs reaching back to the 1960s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income_pilots
deep-root··on Apple’s Ad-Targeting Crackdown Shakes Up Ad Market
Pricing on targeted ads is linked to confidence that a person will perform an action (buy, sign-up, etc). This is a function of the "richness" of data collected -- does the data about you contain demographics, engagement, behavior, so forth.

So a shoe company may pay a lot for a "male/18-35/basketball-fan/shoe-blog-reader". But Safari does not easily allow for that richness of data to be collected, so the price is low.

deep-root··on FOIA request for NROL-39 surveillance satellite logo
Perhaps as it was during the 2013 period when US security agencies were in the spotlight. Here is Jon Stewart Daily Show on this exact logo.[1] (US-only video, here is the NSFW-ish punchline [2]).

NROL-10 launched in 2000 with an almost Miyazaki-esque logo designed by school children.[3] Most of the mission logos seem to be in jest, or more recently Marvel Avengers-based.

deep-root··on FOIA request for NROL-39 surveillance satellite logo
From a previous FOIA request[1] explaining the logo:

"The secret origin of the patch is initially from [redacted] where the problem during the test stage in the thermal vacuum was traced to a large piece of cabling called an octopus harness. The running joke for the crew was that the octopus harness had taken over the world."

deep-root··on Redesigning GitHub Repository Page
Can't tell if the irony is lost that both GitHub UI mocks are by the same designer, Nikita Prokopov.[1][2]
