deelowe··on Vint Cerf, “father of the Internet”, is retiring
Had the pleasure of having dinner with Vint one evening. Such an amazing person. So incredibly humble and one of the most genuine people Ive ever met. As an aside, I asked him directly about the Al Gore internet meme and he said point blank that if it weren't for Als work in Washington the Internet wouldn't exist in its current form.

But yeah, just an awesome guy all around. One of the few people I consider to be a source of inspiration for me.

I wish Zach would start making games again. :-(
deelowe··on Nvidia Halos
> What does this even mean?

It means over 18,600 engineering hours have been spent working on vehicle safety. This is a pretty common metric.

deelowe··on Bird brains (2023)
This reminds me of being told dogs don't feel emotions by someone who never owned one. Parrots most definitely can talk. Their language is extremely primitive but if you've ever been around a grey and it's owner for some time, they definitely talk to each other. The parrot will readily communicate observations and desires.
deelowe··on Apple discontinues the Mac Pro
There were plenty of them around when I worked at Nvidia. They definitely exist.
deelowe··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
I don't expect the ram situation to get any better soon if that's what you're asking.
deelowe··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
Sometimes it's because the original mix was for theater surround sound and lower mixes were generated via software.
deelowe··on Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help
Never thought I'd say this, but I kinda miss Jobs.
deelowe··on Reverse engineering a $1B Legal AI tool exposed 100k+ confidential files
That's not how ethical disclosure works. Both parties should publish and we, the wider tech industry should see this as a good thing both for the hacker and the company that worked with them.
deelowe··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
Not exactly. Infra will win the race. In this aspect, Google is miles ahead of the competition. Their DC solutions scale very well. Their only risk is that the hardware and low level software stack is EXTREMELY custom. They don't even fully leverage OCP. Having said that, this has never been a major problem for Google over their 20+ years of moving away from OTS parts.
deelowe··on A graph explorer of the Epstein emails
Bubba was allegedly a nickname for clinton.
deelowe··on Sustainable memristors from shiitake mycelium for high-frequency bioelectronics
I don't recall this in snow crash
deelowe··on Poker fraud used X-ray tables, high-tech glasses and NBA players
It's been like that forever. Makes it very hard to take the NBA seriously.
deelowe··on Amazon’s Ring to partner with Flock
> The only real solution is strong privacy laws around gov usage and strong courts willing to enforce it.

I don't think this is a solution, personally.

deelowe··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
Can a pi achieve the same iops? I'd be highly suspecious of any such claims.
deelowe··on Cursor 1.7
VScode has a bit of a history now of quickly deprecating competitors who innovate in this space. It already has good options for code completion, AI chat bots, and more features on the horizon. I'm not sure what cursors moat is. Seems to me like Microsoft could easily implement any new feature cursor comes up with.
deelowe··on Sora 2
Wow. What an intelligent take. I would have never expected this from Ben Affleck. He seems extremely familiar with the technology and it's capabilities and limits.
deelowe··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
Thank you for sharing. I recall blackice. I'm not seeing anything here would lead me to believe he's an expert in this particular domain though, which is more about nation state intelligence operations than it is anything technical.
deelowe··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
And what exactly makes "Robert Graham" such an expert in this particular domain? I don't know who this person is or why I should trust their personal blog over the NYT. The article itself is rather hand-wavy in it's assessment of the report. The thesis is essentially "bot farms use lots of sims & this is an example of using lots of sims, therefore this is a bot farm and not espionage."
deelowe··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
> the programs he has written.

This is authority bias. Being a great programmer does not make one an expert in political propaganda, the inner workings of government, or the media.

deelowe··on Terence Tao: The role of small organizations in society has shrunk significantly
I would gladly accept a bit of a slow down on progress if it meant my contributions to society were more meaningful. Additionally, I strongly believe this continuous dwindling of small organizations has resulted in an overall loss of community and a sense of belonging. In my opinion, this is what's causing the overall decline in health that we're seeing in developed nations.

For many, life seems aimless. Your future is to simply contribute what you're told to some faceless multinational for which after 20 years your only recognition will be a small piece of canvas with a mass produced screen printed design.

deelowe··on OpenAI and Nvidia announce partnership to deploy 10GW of Nvidia systems
Correct. There are a variety of solutions. Each DC is somewhat unique, but in general water isn't a huge concern. Cities make a big deal about it b/c they want the hyper scalers to give concessions such as processing gray water for the local muni.
deelowe··on OpenAI and Nvidia announce partnership to deploy 10GW of Nvidia systems
Water is much less of an issue than the media makes it out to be. It's a problem in some specific areas, yes, but power is a much better concern.
deelowe··on OpenAI and Nvidia announce partnership to deploy 10GW of Nvidia systems
DC infra is always allocated in terms of watts. From this number, everything else is extrapolated (e.g. rough IT load, cooling needed, etc).
deelowe··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
It shouldn't matter how many libraries npm supports.
deelowe··on Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people
Correct. We didn't know chatgpt would be huge but we knew big data and ai were the next big thing and we're investing heavily in that space. The funding for this came from sre teams, pms, etc.
deelowe··on Google deletes net-zero pledge from sustainability website
Carbon offsets are not the same as being carbon neutral.
deelowe··on Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people
Chat gpt wasn't considered a toy... Not sure where you got that. We were interested in what openai was going from very early given the founders' history.
deelowe··on Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people
I personally sat in meetings in 2022 where we adjusted staffing projections in anticipation of AI efficiency. Sure some of it was "overhiring," but the reality was that those staffing goals were pre-ai. Once they were updated, that's when the layoffs started because management didn't want anyone who didn't have an AI or big data background.
deelowe··on Nuclear: Desktop music player focused on streaming from free sources
I think they are hilarious.
