decodebytes··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2023)
https://stacklok.com/careers

stacklok is a series A round startup in the supply chain security space, co-founded by the founders of kubernetes and sigstore.

Currently seeking mostly engineering roles. front end (react) and backend (go / gprc).

This is full time remote, but only hiring from EMEA to the East Coast of the US.

decodebytes··on Exercise increases number of immune cells in cancer patients
How much Cycling do you have to do for that to become a credible risk though? I am imaging quite a bit more than a daily commute.
decodebytes··on NPM Provenance Public Beta
paranoid and false.

The Root CA is generated by the sigstore community (five folks, two from academia). Right now github exchanges an OIDC token for a sigstore root chained cert.

GitLab are currently adding themselves, to have the same capability (several other providers are there as well).

decodebytes··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
> I changed my diet and began exercising. Lost 50 pounds. My sleep apnea went away and I no longer even snore.

That's because you have OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). I (OP) have central sleep apnea, there is no obstruction, its related to the nervous system. I am already very lean (I run ultra marathons as a hobby).

OP here. I purchased the first device privately from resmed (one of the main cpap vendors), but the actual one i needed was an ASV and this was refused privately and only available via the NHS. Reading between the lines, I expect the NHS is one of their main customers and had ordered a huge backlog, so they got priority.

I do wonder how many left 100% of funds in there?
decodebytes··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
I honestly expect their will be an acquisition on Monday, with a lot of executive (whitehouse) pressure behind it. So much of the American economy is based on a tech advantage as is its national security. I could of course be completely wrong.

That is only if they want to keep the company operating? I
decodebytes··on Devpod: Remote development environment at Uber
This just seems like a lot of cloud costs to take on, considering how much power developers laptops carry and would be completely untapped. Instead of having everything remote, to me it appears more sensible to have a distributed development environment. I guess this would look something like the dagger.io folks are shooting for.
decodebytes··on Secret scanning is now available for free on public repositories
mostly accidental. you're working on a prototype, so to just get started you use a const at the top of your code with an API key, this then gets checked in and you then realise 'oh shit' , but by this point its within gits tree. It can still be removed, but its not a straightforward process.
decodebytes··on Is Europe just not good at innovating?
I figure this is not including the UK, considering silicon valleys software runs on the thing invented by the Brits (www).
decodebytes··on ChatGPT proves AI is finally mainstream and things are only going to get weirder
I am finding it very useful for laborious tasks that pre-AI would burn up valuable time and energy. A good example is I needed to construct a docker-compose file. I fed the docker run command to ChatGPT and asked it 'generate a docker-compose file from this docker run command' and it produced a perfect usable example. Could I have done it myself, sure, but I just saved 10-15 minutes by having it done for me.
decodebytes··on NHS waiting lists in England hitting new high of 7.2M people
It's not just the waiting lists, it's the dire situation at A&E. Folks waiting around 10 hours to be seen and ambulances parked up with patients onboard as there are no beds available for them to offload and see to the next emergency.
decodebytes··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
https://sigstore.dev - although its really not true to say I built it. I started it off, but very quickly smarter folks then me jumped on board and really took it to all sorts of new directions.
decodebytes··on Can a Proof-of-Work chain use its computing toward real needs?
A public good project I work on (sigstore) penned an article on why a suitable application found it a challenge to leverage Blockchain https://blog.sigstore.dev/sigstore-blockchain-vs-transparenc...
decodebytes··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
Sorry to hear that. I won't try to fault your experience, just state its not a given this is the case for everyone. I have been a vegan for 16 years now. I would say I am in excellent health. Each year I run several 100 mile mountain races along side training all year (running, swimming, hiking and biking), and will be attempting 258 miles non stop race for 5-6 days in the middle of the British winter 2023 (the montane spine race), so I must be doing something right. I very rarely get sick. I also manage a large team of engineers at work and have a young family.
decodebytes··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
How are you going to get a return on that money though? Sell an enterprise version, or do a free / professional model?
decodebytes··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I expect someone will fork shortly and remove all the telemetry
decodebytes··on Ask HN: Who is hiring with pleasant interview processes?
I have to say my Red Hat interview was pleasant.

There were no coding challenges, personality assessments etc. I just spoke with engineers and once with the hiring manager. They would start off with a simple question of 'what have you been working on recently', to then start to delve deeper, asking more questions 'why did you choose that approach?', but it was also two way, if I had experience in something they were interested in, they would genuinely ask more to learn themselves. There was no poker face play going on. I ended up really enjoying it as it was engineers chatting tech. In hindsight though it was a smart move. The people who interviewed me were bright folks and would have spotted any BS a mile off. Also by making me feel relaxed and letting my guard down, they got to see if I was the right cultural fit for the company.

decodebytes··on Google's Certificate Transparency Search page to be discontinued May 15th, 2022
Yes, you can use the certificate-transparency go code to pull down from the trillian API https://github.com/google/certificate-transparency-go/blob/m...

You would need to know the index, or you could just iterate over a range

decodebytes··on Google's Certificate Transparency Search page to be discontinued May 15th, 2022
A lot do, but without knowing it. Chrome uses an 'expect-CT' header, which means the sites TLS cert should chain to a root CA, with both stored in a CTL.
decodebytes··on My journey for dual displays with my M1 Pro Mac (2021)
What cable and connector types are you using please?
decodebytes··on My journey for dual displays with my M1 Pro Mac (2021)
Are you using HDMI or DisplayPort and which type of cables (e.g. do they convert connection type, or for example the same on both ends)? Asking as I have the same doc and about to get an M1.
decodebytes··on Tesla driver dies after his Model 3 stops on highway, gets hit by two other
Do we know this was the result of FSD and not another malfunction, such as a seized component, power failure etc? Seems we should not speculate if we don't know the RCA?
decodebytes··on What does a Principal Software Engineer do?
I am happy to be open here if it helps others. I am not with a FAANG, I am employed by Red Hat. My title is Senior Principal Software Engineer. At Red Hat it goes Software Engineer -> Senior Software Engineer -> Principal Software Engineer -> Senior Principal Software Engineer -> Distinguished Engineer.

My main duties are that I lead a team of 7 engineers and we all work on open source security projects.

My day is a mix of half coding / half meetings. I am UK based, so my mornings are nice and free (while the US sleeps) and then around 2pm I have a large chunk of meetings. The meetings are mostly with my team, senior management, and open source community meetings.

For me being a Principal is a much more than just coding prowess. You also need good 'soft skills'. You need to mentor engineers and think about their growth. Make sure they are challenged enough to grow, but not so much that they end up stressed and out of kilt. You need to be able to communicate with not just other software engineers, but also product managers, directly with customers and many other verticals within a business.

decodebytes··on Ask HN: What’s your favorite tool for planning your day?
Was going to say this, it works so well as you can plan your tasks around meetings. For example, you have a 30 mins spare slot between meetings, use it for some minor admin task. The big empty slots for some programming task where you want to get a good amount of focus on coding.
decodebytes··on Nsh: A fish/bash-like Posix shell in Rust
The need for complete POSIX scope has just never been an issue for me using zsh. I shebang all my scripts to bash (or even plain old sh if its for some stripped down container). I guess if I wanted a lot of functions to run tasks natively it would, but never had that need (but aware some might).
