declan_roberts··on Allegations of US interference in Quebec election
Of course it was made up. From the perspective of both countries it makes zero sense.

But people love the headline. It's like catnip to them.

declan_roberts··on Allegations of US interference in Quebec election
How about the crown of England is in charge of Canada's armed services? And new citizens have to swear allegiance to the King?

King Charles III is king of both countries. What a joke.

declan_roberts··on Australia says OpenAI agent hacked into government website
They don't really want guardrails, they want indemnification.
declan_roberts··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Seattle really doing its best to confront every single strawman argument regarding the high price of groceries other than the obvious and true ones.
declan_roberts··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
I just switched from Claude to openAI. I'm surprised at how much easier it is to talk to. Claude always spoke to me with a suspicious side eye as if I was trying to do something naughty. For example I could not get it to help me get an old abandonware game running (sim tower).
declan_roberts··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration
This is not necessarily a personal thing with Trump. If anything I think this might likely be more of a JD Vance thing.
declan_roberts··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration
This is long overdue. The fact that a large tech company lays 10,000 people off and then immediately turns around and petitions for thousands of H-1B employees is criminal.
declan_roberts··on Java 27
That's one benefit of using Java actually. You can always find Java developers.
declan_roberts··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Exactly. A passcode and email is significantly more privacy-forward than a phone number. A leaked passcode hash is meaningless on the internet and can't be used to triangulate you.
declan_roberts··on Dario, Please
"Please bro just let us make a little more money off inference bro. We're tired of training new models just to stay ahead"
declan_roberts··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Phone number requirement was thankfully removed some time after Musk took over.
declan_roberts··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
What are people using in place of the cowork web/chrome integration? I find that to still be compelling reason to use Claude. Sometimes I have a menial task that involves a lot of web browsing/clicking/searching and it's much easier to let claude using my existing browser/login. I haven't find a replacement for it.
declan_roberts··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
"With its own browser"

I can't even begin to comprehend what kind of personal and PII data this thing will be scraping from its users. Caveat emptor!

declan_roberts··on US police fear Meta smart glasses could be used to secretly record them
This kind of thing just reeks as a meta marketing ploy. My eyes were opened when I started attending some marketing all-hands at my last FANG employer. They do this kind of thing all of the time.
declan_roberts··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Just keep the TV completely disconnected and use something like an Apple TV.
declan_roberts··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
I love the phone, but I really hate the "ethical" framing of device repairability. This is an engineering problem and we don't need to twist it through a moral framework.

Phones that are repairable have superior engineering, not superior morality.

declan_roberts··on A mysterious kidney disease has arrived in Texas
We should be seeing it all over America in that case.
declan_roberts··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
We know that at least Anthropic is renting inference from xAI but I think the other ones would be news.
declan_roberts··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
I give the salmon a little more credit because the entire river can't be a beaver dam. That's their theory and I think will more research we're going to learn more about what's happening here.
declan_roberts··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
The temperature is cooler? That can't possibly be the only reason to explain such a dramatic change in survival rates. We definitely need more research on this topic.
declan_roberts··on Check if a file was made with Claude
It's for your safety!
declan_roberts··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
And this is a PR piece put out by the ad company that people eat up because orange man bad.
declan_roberts··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
As long as tech companies make a stand against superficial culture war fights like this nobody will care that they've caved w.r.t privacy over the last two decades. Sad!
declan_roberts··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Windows and Mac each have well thought through and secure solutions to these problems. It just doesn't exist on Linux without serious sacrifice of UX.
declan_roberts··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
So the solution is to make your computer basically unusable. I guess that's one way to secure things.
declan_roberts··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
I haven't personally seen it on HN but it has been an issue at least since the beginning of tariffs, and there's significant rules in the original NAFTA agreement to try and curb it. So it's not new, and definitely predates that report.

Here's a NYT article from April about the difficulty in preventing transhipping.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/07/us/politics/tariffs-trade...

declan_roberts··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
Chinese vehicles are a little more conspicuous in their origin than rolled steel and aluminum.
declan_roberts··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
Canada is very unfortunately caught in the trade war between the USA and China. It's pretty easy right now for certain goods to bypass the US tariffs by being transshipped through Canada and enter the USA without tariff because of minimal processing. Chinese steel is a notable example of this.

And a lot of Canada's trade MOUs with other countries basically requires they have this special privilege. So there's gonna be fallout everywhere.

I wouldn't personally want to own Canadian dollars right now but I think they'll get this figured out.
