declan_roberts··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
Chinese vehicles are a little more conspicuous in their origin than rolled steel and aluminum.
declan_roberts··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
Canada is very unfortunately caught in the trade war between the USA and China. It's pretty easy right now for certain goods to bypass the US tariffs by being transshipped through Canada and enter the USA without tariff because of minimal processing. Chinese steel is a notable example of this.

And a lot of Canada's trade MOUs with other countries basically requires they have this special privilege. So there's gonna be fallout everywhere.

I wouldn't personally want to own Canadian dollars right now but I think they'll get this figured out.

That's the definition of a personal decision.
declan_roberts··on Moderna reports first positive Phase 3 for mRNA neoantigen therapy in melanoma
"Think about grandma" was the covid version of "somebody think of the children"
declan_roberts··on Moderna reports first positive Phase 3 for mRNA neoantigen therapy in melanoma
I can't speak for other people but I was upset to enter a medical era where bureaucrats were forcing medical decisions on me. I was forced to get it or lose my job despite 1) working remotely, 2) having already had Covid and 3) being healthy and not at risk of Covid death but being the largest risk for myocarditis.

Probably one of the most polarizing issues of the last 5 years.
declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
A lot of us in tech have CVS Caremark as our pharmacy benefit manager and they will cover Zepbound (tirzepatide) for weight loss in the Fall.

The problem is I'm too skinny now to get it!

declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Pill form is only available for regular GLP-1, not the double (tirzepatide) and triple agonist (retatrutide).
declan_roberts··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
It's better value to me that someone is digitizing and training with books then they just languish somewhere in perpetuity.
declan_roberts··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
I really don't think Anthropic has the leverage to pull this kind of thing off in the face of competition. OpenAI doesn't do it (yet), Grok doesn't do it, neither does Deepseek. I'm sure the latter two have plans to intentionally never do it.

Who is even asking for this? Sounds like something some obsessive internal employees would push on the world.

declan_roberts··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
I feel like I've heard this story 1 million times before.
declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Yes the medicine does it. It's attacking T2D via several pathways, but in the case of Reta the glucagon is doing the heavy lifting of clearing liver fat.

This extra receptor is why Reta is a triple agonist unlike semaglutide (single glp1) or tirzepatide (glp1+gip double agonist).

declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
That's a common and very acceptable concern and there's not great answers for it. Mostly a place will do multi-vail testing for purity, sterility, endotoxin and heavy metals. The idea is that the sample is sufficient to show safety. Many are rightfully dubious of this but still thousand and thousands of people taking it.
declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Retatrutide has a specific mechanism for clearing liver fat (glucagon) which makes it one of the most effective ways to treat T2D. This is the 3rd agonist not found in semaglutide or tirzepatide.
declan_roberts··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
If you're overweight or especially if you're T2D I highly encourage you to discuss GLP-1 with your doctor. If you're T2D then get research retatrutide which looks to be an actual cure for T2D by clearing liver fat. It should be released early next year but research-use is available and what everybody is taking. Companies like finnrick do public testing of research peptides and a good place to gather names.

Not sure they even have a choice.
declan_roberts··on DeepSeek API Pricing Update
This actually works out favorably for US customers since the peak hours are Chinese working hours and cheap hours are US working hours.

Take a walk through South Lake or San Francisco and he'll realize he's wrong.
declan_roberts··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
And H-1Bs are easier to overwork and abuse because the threat of deportation and the dangling carrot of citizenship are very powerful motivators that don't exist with US citizens.
declan_roberts··on Tailscale Traces Database Corruption to 16y/o SQLite WAL-Reset Bug
> Now we’re in summer, we’re confident that we’ve found the bug, that we understand it—and more importantly, that we’ve fixed it.

This is the feeling I chase as a software engineer. It's the greatest motivator.

declan_roberts··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
Between AI and competing against the world with H-1B, it's really never been harder to get an entry or mid-level software engineering job.

Which means our pipeline to senior engineer is completely broken.

We don't need a "new" bill of rights. If they don't respect the first one why do you think they'll respect the next one?

There's a different remedy for the current situation.

No dealer sales is such an enormous perk. We need this everywhere but of course there's too much incumbent vested interest to keep the status quo.

I don't believe at all this is from a lack of funds. The only thing that lacks here is the desire to put criminals in prison.
