debt··on Root cause analysis: significantly elevated error rates on 2019‑07‑10
"We identified that our rolled-back election protocol interacted poorly with a recently-introduced configuration setting to trigger the second period of degradation."

Damn what a mess. Sounds like y'all are rolling out way to many changes too quickly with little to no time for integration testing.

It's a somewhat amateur move to assume you can just arbitrarily rollback without consequence, without testing etc.

One solution I don't see mentioned, don't upgrade to minor versions ever. And create a dependency matrix so if you do rollback, you rollback all the other things that depend on the thing you're rolling back as well.

debt··on Project Vesta – Mitigating climate change with green sand beaches
No, I'm saying the scale of the cause of problem vs this guy's tiny sand solution seems out of whack.

Sand won't stop millions of carbon emitting cars on the road. We need bigger solutions.

debt··on Project Vesta – Mitigating climate change with green sand beaches
If you work backwards, climate change is a giant man-made disaster that literally can only be countered by a just-as-big man-made solution.

Green sand on a beach is like, not as big as millions of cars on roads.

debt··on Ask HN: How to handle code reviews with a visually impaired coworker?
"We could do physical Code Review sessions, but it's difficult because I've a very chaotic schedule"

Aren't you a developer? You're not a manager? Can you explain why you have a chaotic schedule? If you don't code, why are you doing code reviews then?

Seems like that's the fundamental problem right there. You said so yourself, physical code reviews would solve it. So that's the solution, the problem is your schedule, fix your schedule.

You're making this person accommodate your schedule(in addition to their own), because you don't want to do your job. Again, unless I'm missing something.

debt··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
Think about it: managers are only something other managers create.

Nobody wants a manager.

You could be such a swell person, but nobody wants to work under somebody unless it's an apprenticeship.

Therefore, the best manager is one you barely know exists.

debt··on Millionaire hacker gets 9 years in death of man building nuclear bunker tunnels
“He's a weird guy”

He was building a series of tunnels beneath a bomb shelter to protect himself from an impending nuclear war with North Korea.

He’s not weird, he’s crazy.

debt··on I'll Let Myself In: Tactics of Physical Pen Testers (2017) [video]
I agree, but it requires quickly reading the situation. Sometimes it can be as effective as not making eye contact.
debt··on I'll Let Myself In: Tactics of Physical Pen Testers (2017) [video]
Walk confidently and never make eye contact. Easiest way to get into anywhere. It forces people to verbally call you out which people rarely do.

Looking lost or "looking for something" while wandering in is another great tactic.

debt··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
I don't get it, why do I so regularly see these random solutions to depression on the homepage? Are startup founders really depressed or something? Is there a rash of suicides in this community? I don't get it.

Overwhelmingly, normal-ass anti-anxiety, SSRs, and therapy is to be the best form of treatment. Pumping your body full of magnesium is a hack that falls in to the bucket of exercise or sleeping more.

If you're scared about going to the doctor and getting prescribed, that's one thing. But mainlining crushed up magnesium vitamins to fix your depression is a complete lack of understanding of depression.

Magnesium is not treatment. Mushrooms and Ketamine is not treatment. Get actual treatment.

debt··on Micro Frontends
The fundamental problem is cleanly persisting data.

There's all sorts of design paradigms we use to attempt to send state through the presentation layer to the persistence layer.

Ultimately there's no clean way to do it and because of that it's hard to have something like a micro frontend. The presentation layer is always aware of the data persistence layer to some degree.

Take a physical light switch. The switch will still work if the power is out; it goes up and down. The same doesn't have to be true from a purely digital standpoint. If the power is out, we can actually disable the switch(assuming this digital display switch is powered by a battery in this case).

So in the digital switch case, the switch accurately reflects the global state of power. In the analog switch case, the switch still functions regardless of the global state of power.

In the digital case, one must write code that actually checks the global power state to conditionally enable the on/off functionality of the digital switch. So that code, is not strictly presentation layer code, rather it's state-maintenance code or I don't know what you'd call it. Point is, you now have the presentation layer now tightly coupled to the something outside of the presentation layer; in this case, the global state of power("is the electricity working?").

And this is just a simple example of an on/off switch.

Micro frontends are a difficult problem. One solution might be to have all frontends be signal based. So if you send a signal a listener can optionally handle it or not or maybe nothing is listening. In the analog on/off switch case, that's exactly how it works. If the power is off, the switch still flips.

debt··on A $442B Money Manager Says Tech's Glory Days Are Over
I always say that the gap between now and the future will be filled with technology. So I don't know what she's referring to as the only path towards the future is through technology.
debt··on H-1B visa: Government says work ban for H-4 spouses coming this month
Everyone is pretty aware that most H1-b visa holders aren’t exactly highly-skilled labor. It’s been heavily abused at this point.

How could you argue otherwise when the minimum salary for a H1-b eligible position is $60,000?

This seems to be correcting a massive loophole in the already broken H1-b program.

debt··on How to do hard things
I’ve heard this lil story before but honestly both strategies are really dependent on the situation.

There might be situations where’d you want to continually churn out pots. In other situations, pressure is really high, and you have one shot to get it right.

Both strategies depend on the context. If anything, the best approach is to figure out which strategy is needed for the given situation. I would imagine, strategy of churning out pots is the most common one.

But safety critical systems certainly need that pot to be right the first time otherwise people die.

debt··on Tsinghua law professor who criticized Xi Jinping barred from leaving China
This is alarming. I think these kind of one-off things can feel somewhat boring or unimportant if it were some very underdeveloped tiny country with a small population.

But we're talking about a country with 1.5B people and a very sophisticated technology sector, a powerful military and a modern economy starting to act like a dictatorship.

debt··on Fighting vendor lock-in and designing testable serverless apps

debt··on Fisher-Price Recalls Rock ’N Play Sleeper Linked to Infant Deaths
"The babies don't sleep in it during the night."

Yeah I get a feeling people were using these to kind of get out of soothing the baby at night. People were putting their baby in it and like walking away or going back to bed.

The Snoo I think is what most people want, but it's pretty expensive. But you can put the baby down, restrain them properly and then walk away or go to bed.

debt··on Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox
"hemorrhaging its best people"

I don't consider people that oversaw one of the biggest cases of user data misuse in history which, by the way, could've been easily prevented, as the "best people". Sounds like Facebook is making the changes necessary to rectify the mess they oversaw.

debt··on Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox
As the leader of Facebook's products he essentially was directly responsible for the total neglect of the Facebook Developer program which caused the biggest PR disaster in FB's history; not to mention, the misuse of user data collected through the program by Cambridge Analytica.

I fail to see how he was a good leader vs riding the wave of Facebook's success. Sounds like Facebook eventually outgrew him anyway so they fired him.
