debo_··on Learn Programming with OCaml
Ocaml is ancient at this point. It's never going to be python, but I doubt it's going to disappear.
debo_··on America's two largest school districts impose AI moratoriums
We were not allowed to have graphing calculators in elementary or highschool (90s), either.
debo_··on A dark horse enters China's AI race: StartLux
A dark horse named Lux.
debo_··on A note on subscription prices from LWN

debo_··on Tmp.0ut Volume 5
The interview with Doug McIlroy is incredible. It's almost worth a link all on its own.
debo_··on [dead]
In one minute, I learned they commissioned the art from an actual artist. Calling a few bullet points under each image "overwhelming" is strange. Perhaps get over yourself.
debo_··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
This combination of username and opinion are very confusing.
debo_··on The mechanics of the Nepali flash flood
I have spoken to quite a few real estate agents in Sudbury who mentioned folks are buying property there as a hedge against climate change.

About 18 years ago, some guy at work was laughing at a video of someone being blown to pieces by an explosive device. People kept walking by his desk and laughing, I suppose because it looked so cartoonish that it felt more like looney tunes than real life.

As an experiment, I showed the same video to my 85-year old grandmother, and she cried out in horror and prayed for the people in the video for a solid hour afterwards.

Can you explain this? I think consumption taxes are the most regressive taxes possible because they are "flat" and thus affect lower-income people harder.

Marginal income taxes are regressive now in the sense that folks with more wealth have far more resources to avoid paying them, but otherwise the reasoning seems less regressive than a consumption tax (e.g. VAT)

I do understand UBI. I was referring to the previous context that AI would introduce mass loss of jobs and overall reduced employment, not specifically to UBI being a replacement for jobs.

I do think taxing profits is still insufficient, because unless the tax rate is close to 100% (lol) the "k-shaped" economy is still reinforced, but just slowed slightly. In combination with a wealth/holdings tax, maybe.

Personally I think the idea of taxing robots/tokens directly is too narrow an idea.

I support UBI and wealth taxes, but I also think generally that will be a difficult transition in terms of social upheaval. There are so many people I know who are financially well-off but completely fall apart when there is no visible professional hierarchy to give them meaning.

One would hope that this would still go down better than destituting large percentages of the world population, but I wonder.

> I believe we should tax AI tokens and robots. Right now, if you’re an employer and you hire someone, you pay payroll taxes on their earnings. But if you buy a robot, you can usually write it off right away as a business expense. The tax system nudges you toward replacing people with machines.
debo_··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Exactly how my friends describe me!
debo_··on France's tax agency got hacked (in French)
I lol'ed, but I imagine outside of Quebec the French probably just use the English word "hacking" when referring to a computer hack.
debo_··on Peppermint oil reduces blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg in small study
I just felt like making a mass pun.
debo_··on Peppermint oil reduces blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg in small study
On the topic of mass, I am certain your pedantic comment will be mass downvoted.

Unlike the anuses in government etc.
debo_··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
I see results like the OP as speeding up progress. Tests like ptau make it faster and cheaper to screen for participants in clinical trials. This allows more resources to be spent on pre-screening, to identify candidates that might be healthy at time of trial start, but who are likely to develop cognitive impairment during the trial, which can be helpful for better measuring efficacy etc.

There was a good, accessible guidelines paper in the Lancet that described helpful interventions at all stages of life to decrease the odds of developing cognitive impairment later in life.[0]

In terms of late-stage treatments to halt or reverse progression, that still seems very far away. The causes are so diverse... My father died of vascular dementia not too long ago, so I'm familiar with the caregiver side in addition to the business.

I work directly in this field (clinically validated digital cognitive tests that characterize cognition, often paired with p-tau blood tests.) Ask me anything, I guess!
debo_··on I built a low-latency AI companion that plays Skyrim with me
There are players in my D&D groups that act very similar to your bored dog companion.
debo_··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Criticizing someone's mischaracterization of a book while acting like a meme isn't particularly interesting. If you're going to be smug, at least be creative about it.

> Tell me you didn't read "The Prince" without telling me you didn't read it.

Do you have to talk like this? How difficult is it to rewrite this as "I don't believe this is the message conveyed in The Prince."

debo_··on Teaching my kid to code with a modern MUD
I had a blast in the late 2000s joining dead MUDs and just wandering around. It was utterly bizarre, in a good way. It also felt somewhat shocking when someone else actually signed in.
debo_··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
The website runs on RISC-V.
debo_··on Online clinics and influencers are promoting Cialis as a longevity drug
If that's the weirdest thing you've heard of weightlifters doing, you are lucky.
debo_··on The weekend is 100 years old
From what I recall of pre-Nubian ancient Egypt, Egyptians also bathed by coating themselves in oil and then scraping it off.
