deaux··on Flock cameras track more than your license plate, and they're spreading fast
There's clearly another vocal camp that's eroding HN: surveillance capitalists acting like everything's well and good, in the face of evidence that the opposite is widespread [0].

deaux··on Flock cameras track more than your license plate, and they're spreading fast
Except for of course, the more than a dozen known cases where cops have been using Flock to stalk people [0]. Realistically, it's very likely that most of these cases do not become known.

deaux··on I used Claude Code to get a second opinion on my MRI
Frustrating post. This gives rightful ammunition to the calls of "LLMs need to be avoided for anything medical". Even though the issue is that they're asking it to interpret images. They need to be avoided for that, but that doesn't say much about their medical accuracy outside of image interpretation.

It would already be a huge benefit to 90% of people worldwide if the very first part of most hospital visits would be outsourced to frontier-level LLMs. Yet this kind of misuse just gives the medical industry a stick to beat that idea into the ground.

Oh well, I'm sure there will be at least a few countries that will indeed embrace frontier models for initial diagnostic medical purposes. Maybe medical tourism destinations. But it's unfortunate for those who can't afford the trip.

deaux··on I used Claude Code to get a second opinion on my MRI
Absolutely. It's very unfortunate that this post used the worst example possible of using LLMs for medical purposes.

General-purpose LLMs are _fantastic_ at medical diagnosis that do not involve imaging. I am completely convinced that given enough information and time, frontier models already outperform >90% of doctors on initial diagnosis of internal issues and suggesting medical tests to further reject or confirm the most likely theories. To the point where I'm eagerly waiting for the first hospital in the world that's willing to be open and honest about using them for that first step, and then proceeding from there. I'll be on a flight there as soon as one arrives.

At the same time, they're worse than useless at anything involving medical imaging. Asking them to interpret them is worse than trying to interpret them yourself as a layman. And you surely wouldn't interpret them yourself.

deaux··on Michigan spent $1.8B and only created 602 jobs
Unfortunately Ukraine too is a rounding error compared to the invasions. It's negligible compared to Afghanistan on its own, let alone if you include Iraq.
deaux··on Michigan spent $1.8B and only created 602 jobs
I did consider those. The cost of the overseas bases is a rounding error compared to the invasions.

> If you go to the US, you will see Chinese brands nowhere.

You'll see the above very commonly in people's homes and on people's phones in the US. You're making the mistake of limiting your view to "retail businesses on the street" when those have been going out of fashion in the first place. All of the above are brands that are commonly seen in the US and a lot of people (especially those under 30) are familiar with.

deaux··on Michigan spent $1.8B and only created 602 jobs
> That's because the US also defends the free world.

The US invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Iraq have sure helped defend the free world. How many trillions went into those combined? Fantastic return per $ of "free world defense".

Catan is Monopoly for those who want to look a little smarter. Lots of party games are much better than Catan.

I think most people who like board games would choose pictionary over it. At least that can fulfill a quick warmup role to move on to something better.

deaux··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
Could you share some pictures of the rock you're living under? The US regime is concerned with furthering the interests of a closed circle of powerful loyals. This achieves that goal. Access is reserved to those loyals.
deaux··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
> Between the Chinese government and Anthropic, I know which one I'd rather send tokens to.

You meant to write "Between the Chinese government and the US government". Completely agreed though, better to send it to the former.

deaux··on Countries are competing to see which can carry out mass surveillance the best
By pure coincidence, I learned today that there's also another four words that will at least get you prosecuted in the UK: "You have a conscience".

The "huge" adjective seems to be the core of the problem.

deaux··on Countries are competing to see which can carry out mass surveillance the best
Last I checked River->Sea is 6 words. Unless it's a phrase about a different subject, but I can't imagine since the UK only tends to arrest sign holders as part of protecting Bibi's interests.
deaux··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
> I don’t believe the word “dumping” is used for the similar process when Venture Capital is subsidizing it,

I've been doing so for years. How about you join me today. I already see two other users doing the same, so there'll be at least 4 of us.

It's blatantly dumping, whether the source of the money is directly the government (those in power) or VC (mostly US billionaires (trillionaires?), in other words, those in power) is a trivial implementation detail.

deaux··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Yes. Dumping abroad is the entire model that Silicon Valley has been built on in the last 2 decades. China just copied the model. And even then it's a light version of it.
deaux··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
You know, normally when I read these Reddit comments saying "you made me snort on the bus", I always took them as exaggeration.

Turns out I was wrong, I just hadn't read something funny enough yet.

> the US may start subsidizing and dumping its goods everywhere

This deserves to win HN comment of the year 2026.

The majority of the NASDAQ market cap is a direct result of the US subsidizing and dumping its goods on the rest of the world en masse.

> We can argue about the consumer friendliness of the regulations in the EU but they also add demonstrably to the cost of tech product

Nope, they don't. You'd have to compare with some countries that are 1. Not the US 2. Have less consumer protections than the EU. And guess what? Apple products are also significantly more expensive than the US there. But hey, half your comments on here are this kind of EU bashing based on grade school reasoning.

It's surprising to see on HN of all places people unaware that Apple products (and almost all other tech products) have been a lot cheaper in the US than elsewhere for decades.

So much FUD here, same for the Bunny thread. It doesn't feel organic anymore.

deaux··on The Korean telecom giant at the center of Anthropic's Mythos controversy
> Just as there are many young people on MAGA, there are also many young Koreans who are caught up in right-wing conspiracy theories.

You're literally talking to one. Search for any thread remotely related to Korean companies or politics in the last month and you'll see this user in the comments spouting classic conspiracy theories. Of course never replying when called out, as on HN we luckily have people like you and me who bring the facts and the majority doesn't have time for that kind of nonsense unlike the Korean communities they get these conspiracies from. deaux··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
I never said that "as of June 2026, the grass is greener in China". What I did say is that the US has rapidly been adopting all of the downsides of China with zero of the upsides. That's an observation.

> There maybe some backsliding or ppl may think things are worsening in the US

If you're phrasing this as "maybe" and "may think", you're not here to have a serious discussion.

Our local DPA, who will then proceed to ignore it for years or tell us to take them to court ourselves. [0] As European privacy law including GDPR is a symbolic tool meant to placate and selectively enforce when politically expedient, not to seriously enforce. Understandable, given that near all EU politicians work for corporate interests, as in the US.

deaux··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
> You're fighting powers-that-be who did the analysis and decided that being like China was the right way to go

Not at all. If they decided to be like China, then that would include the benefits. They're nothing like China. Xi isn't siphoning hundreds of billions to his personal account through $XI coin. He isn't giving the reigns of the country to his tech CEO buddies. He isn't destroying scientific institutions and looting the country for personal gain.

I hate to break it to you but this is the kind of surfacelevel comparison that doesn't hold up when considered for more than 2 seconds.

deaux··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
> The US is slowly becoming more like China.

Hah, if only. Then at least it would see some of the benefits too. Instead, it's making sure to only copy all of the downsides, with zero of the upsides.

deaux··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
Classic case of getting downvoted solely because it's a negative comparison to China. The letter for letter exact same comment in a thread only about the US on here, that doesn't mention China, would get upvoted.

You are, of course, right. All of the downsides with none of the benefits.

deaux··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
Your skepticism led you to underrate the usefulness until then. Those who have been using agentic coding for the last 2 years can tell you Opus 4.6 was not a step change in quality, it was mostly a step change in the Overton Window and narrative.
deaux··on How to earn a billion dollars
You can simply mandate by law that these sells must be sold to the market at, say, 2% per month, and that the government will not make use of voting rights during that period.

There's so many possible options.

deaux··on How to earn a billion dollars
My latest reply to you was "Yes.". Might want to feed the thread to chatgpt and ask it if that's "not willing to engage in a discussion in good faith".
deaux··on How to earn a billion dollars
That's a very different claim, and no one reading your first comments would've interpreted "The West" as "The Western style of thinking" (which is hardly tractable) rather than "The bloc that is the West in 2026".

It would be in a sense Eurocentric and patronizing to suggest that supremacy-based thinking all the way from the Middle East to East Asia stems from Greek culture. And if you're trying to say that dualism is universal and arises everywhere, then Greece becomes almost irrelevant and there's no real point to be made that the West has particularly relevant unique or exaggerated characteristics when it comes to the pervasive supremacy-based thinking.
