deathwarmedover··on Winamp clone in Swift for macOS
I wondered initially if this was a winamp port for older macs.

It requires macOS 13.0 (High Sierra, 2017) or later, which is several releases after it stopped being called OS X. 10.11 (El Capitan, 2015) was the last OS X.

deathwarmedover··on How we made JSON.stringify more than twice as fast
Not that I doubt the value of the work, and the reasoning of its performance directly affecting common operations makes intuitive sense, but I would have liked to hear more about what concrete problems were being solved. Was there any interesting data across the V8 ecosystem about `JSON.stringify` dominating runtimes?

You could check if it made it into archive.org?

I had also seen criticism of it here: https://screenfont.ca/learn/

I notice the author is using the wallpaper from Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), released in April 2008.
deathwarmedover··on Blog Anonymously
When the author started with "this is not fool-proof by any means" the first thing that came to my mind was linguistic fingerprinting.
deathwarmedover··on A Decade of London in Google Street View
Reminds me of how I was sad when the bridge for Shoreditch Overground station blocked the Tea Building, but that was before the first Street View image it seems: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5231608,-0.0776078,3a,75y,...
deathwarmedover··on Stop Using the Flesch-Kincaid Test
The title is perhaps missing "... for spoken and/or non-English sources, preferably not at all".

If we should stop using this test, what should we start using? In the author's comment on the study, they noted "There are ways to study linguistic complexity".

I'm aware, for example, of this python project which provides F-K scores along with 7 other readability metrics to consider: https://pypi.org/project/py-readability-metrics/

deathwarmedover··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
You can do a timed disable (like a pause) from the Pi-hole UI: I've done 5-minute disables to eg. get through purchase check-out flows with tight coupling to trackers.

>Wikipedia articles [...] are all written like advertisements.

Editors do actively work against this. I've seen this template in the wild often enough: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Advertising

deathwarmedover··on How Many Type Parameters Can a Java Method Have?
I wonder if it would be feasible to scan, say, GitHub or Apache projects to find the highest parameter count in the wild?

deathwarmedover··on Defence Against the Docker Arts
it looks like the article title has changed from "Defence Against the Docker Arts" to "Turn Your Code into Docker Images with Cloud Native Buildpacks" at some point.

For those interested in the current and planned undersea cable infrastructure, there's a good SVG diagram on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cable_map18.svg
deathwarmedover··on Coda 2
I really did enjoy using Coda when I was doing PHP work around 2008-2009 (got my company to buy me a copy). Now that I work primarily in Ruby and forced myself to learn Vim a few months ago, I can't ever imagine myself going back to Coda.

That said, it looks like they added a bunch of features I would have loved back then.

deathwarmedover··on 4chan switches to HTML5/CSS3 (SFW)
Just glancing at the front page, the SFW boards on 4chan outnumber the NSFW (18+) boards. Of the top 4 boards in terms of 4chan's traffic, only two are in the 18+ category.

/b/ (the very NSFW board responsible for 4chan's notorious infamy) accounts for 30% of 4ch's traffic but the next two most popular boards /v/ (video games) and /a/ (anime and manga) are both SFW. Not that I would recommend anyone to lurk 4chan at work.

The traffic and popularity figures I mention are on Wikipedia with citations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4chan

deathwarmedover··on 4chan switches to HTML5/CSS3 (SFW)
Relevant quotes:

* "The new HTML should be much easier to parse, and when benchmarking the official 4chan Chrome extension, we found that it parses approximately 600% faster."

* "CORS [Cross-origin resource sharing] is now supported"

* "responsive design for mobile browsers"

deathwarmedover··on Turning down Zynga: Why I opted out of the $210M Omgpop buy
You're right, Shay posts:

One clarification: I didn't choose the title of this article and I am not confirming or denying any sum of how much the Zynga/OMGPOP buyout was for - I honestly was not privy to what that amount was, and I don't know anything more than the public information on that point.

deathwarmedover··on Kim Dotcom: The US Government is Wrong, Here’s Why
It's worth pointing out that Dotcom defending himself on this point in an interview recently: http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO1203/S00018/kim-dotcom-inte...

And those clips were long before I had a wife and a family and kids, you know,
my priorities have changed. I’m a family man, you know, I am not
doing these kinds of things – that was childish stuff, and it was
fun at the time and I don’t regret it, but that is not me today, I
  am a different guy.

deathwarmedover··on James Cameron's entirely new submarine
Wikipedia seems to indicate that the Kola superdeep borehole has since been surpassed in 2008 and 2011 by oil drilling operations. The current record holder is Sakhalin-I at 12,345 meters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakhalin-I
deathwarmedover··on The (un)importance of gender in programming
You caveat that last point well, but I think you're just speculating on this person's subconscious motivations and assuming the worst.

I felt similarly that the original comment was not a request for consensus, but more of a loaded question implying that it's never ok to call an adult woman a girl (which is why I asked the OP to elaborate elsewhere in the thread).
