deanebarker··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
I thought PICS was a well-designed framework. I was disappointed when it didn't take off.
deanebarker··on Fast drilldown dashboards from a single Parquet file
Interesting how noise complaints dwarf any other type of complaint in NYC.
deanebarker··on ABC News has taken all FiveThirtyEight articles offline
But why?
deanebarker··on Forking the Web
This is what you want: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemini_(protocol)
deanebarker··on Wander – A tiny, decentralised tool to explore the small web
Love this, but I need it to allow me to break the frame. I found some neat sites, but I need a button to open them in a new tab, frame-free, if I want to.
deanebarker··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Related to this, I spent three years looking up 1,000 things and writing about them.

deanebarker··on Ask HN: Best Podcasts of 2025?
Call me simple or provincial, but I really enjoyed "Good Hang" from Amy Poehler. It's a breezy interview with interesting people (doesn't hurt that I'm a long-time SNL fan).

Take a look at these posts --

I'm glad someone finally did something here. I wish you every success.

deanebarker··on Ask HN: I underestimated how lonely building solo can be
There are two types of "solo":

* No co-workers working on the same thing

* No users using the thing

Both are hard.

deanebarker··on Ask HN: My family business runs on a 1993-era text-based-UI (TUI). Anybody else?
I visited a food service company a couple years ago. They had phone reps taking orders from customers (restaurants ordering produce and such). They used a TUI (a "green screen" essentially).

I have never seen people move through a GUI that fast. They were lightning quick with it. They were like an veteran accountant with a ten-key adding machine. It was amazing, and pretty damn sobering when you think how much work we spend on GUIs.

deanebarker··on Ask HN: What are some impressive vibe coding projects?
"Lessons Learned from Vibe-Coding a Configuration Parser"

Here's the spec I discuss in the post:

deanebarker··on Why Is SQLite Coded In C
It's hard to argue with success. SQLite's pervasiveness is kind of a royal flush.
deanebarker··on iPhone Air
I've been a PC guy my whole live, and was forced onto a MacBook Pro this year for work.

The battery life is insane. The idea of charging my laptop has become this weird ritual now, only known of in lore and legend, that I partake of only when there is a blood moon.

deanebarker··on Show HN: Blueprint: Fast, Nunjucks-like templating engine for Java 8 and beyond
Syntax looks very much like Liquid. I feel like that syntax is becoming a standard.
deanebarker··on Libre – An anonymous social experiment without likes, followers, or ads
Yeah, when I visited, it was utterly destroyed with racist ranting and (I think) some neo-Nazi. Horrifying, yet impressive.
deanebarker··on The Missing Protocol: Let Me Know
I followed up with this:

"The Missing Service: Notify One Time" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44890642

deanebarker··on The Missing Service: Notify One Time
A follow-up to my prior post about the hypothetical "Let Me Know" protocol.
deanebarker··on The Joy of Mixing Custom Elements, Web Components, and Markdown
This feels like Markdown + Liquid.

I wrote quite a bit about Fluid, which is the C# implementation of Liquid. https://deanebarker.net/tech/fluid/

deanebarker··on The Chrome Speculation Rules API allows the browser to preload and prerender
How does this affect analytics on the hosting site? Will they get phantom requests for pages that might not ever be viewed?
deanebarker··on XMLUI
I thought of XUL right away too.
deanebarker··on Positive link between cannabis use and 'Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events'
I read through it, but I couldn't figure out if it was (1) just smoked cannabis, or (2) general THC usage (from gummies or drinks).
deanebarker··on XSLT – Native, zero-config build system for the Web
> massive wobbly tower of enterprise Java to make it work

??

I was transforming XML with, like, three lines of VBScript in classic ASP.

deanebarker··on How to Write Compelling Release Announcements
Actually, I don't love this. To me, the examples in red are much more helpful -- they explain, in bare terms, what was actually done. The examples in green feel like a marketing exercise to me. Like they're trying to wrap or obscure clear writing in something to obfuscate it.

"Added 'duplicate' button to the event menu" is kind of exactly what I want to read.

I don't know -- maybe have both kinds? A simple, bare-bones set, and then an... "embellished" set?

deanebarker··on Everything I Know About Webhooks
Literally just a brain dump of everything I've learned about them in 20 years.
deanebarker··on Writing that changed how I think about programming languages
I wish someone would write this for higher-level languages: JavaScript or .NET. I'm sure this person is brilliant, but they're operating at a much lower (higher?) level than most of us.
deanebarker··on Spring 83: a draft protocol intended to suggest new ways of relating online
I keep an eye on Gemini. I have a browser for it, and I look around once a month or so. It's refreshing. It represents a simpler time I'd like to go back to, occasionally.
deanebarker··on Show HN: LinkedIn sucks, so I built a better one
I've written 20K or so words about this idea (meta-idea?). Some of those words might be intelligent... https://ineffable.deanebarker.net/
deanebarker··on HTTrack Website Copier
I used the hell out of this, back in the day. We would copy websites down, then use Swish-E from the command line to index everything from the file system, then somehow make a web interface out of it. Good times.
deanebarker··on Show HN: Leaflet.pub – a web app for creating and sharing rich documents
I do love it when someone does an original take on what a "document" means. I love the intellectual exploration of it. Kudos, genuinely.
