dean177··on Raising the American Weakling (2017)
Grip strength is an indicator for overall fitness since it will improve from a range of activities, weightlifting being an obvious one but even something like cycling will have an improved grip compared to someone who doesn’t do anything. Improving your grip strength specifically won’t really improve your performance or overall fitness though (unless you are into rock climbing!)
dean177··on Doing work locally minimizes problems with Electron apps
I wouldn’t recommend revery to anyone yet, although it is really promising it isn’t anywhere near ready yet.
dean177··on 'Hell is coming': week-long heatwave begins across Europe
Imagine if the temperature dropped to -5c for a week in Bagdad.

The people who live in these areas aren’t used to this kind of consistent extreme heat, especially considering how humid it will be.

Northern India is actually experiencing a heat wave too https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Indian_heat_wave

dean177··on Vue: We no longer have any plan of deprecating the Object API
Don’t the existing and new apis have type definitions?

Why do you feel left out?

dean177··on Regulatory Capture at ICANN
phish.ing phis.hing phishi.ng etc
dean177··on Haskell Fan Site
Can you give an example of what you mean by this?

That’s the kind of thing you would use “if” for right?

dean177··on Haskell Fan Site
I can see how this might be possible but does it actually work like this in practice?

Is your k here representing “take k . sort”?

dean177··on Haskell Fan Site
If you are running a sort them you will need to compare each of the elements at least once which will mean you have to evaluate the whole list right?
dean177··on Haskell Fan Site
Sorting has to operate on the entire input, how is laziness an advantage here?
dean177··on Startup idea checklist
I wasn’t endorsing the essay or advocating for these hyper growth vc fuelled businesses, just pointing out that this checklist doesn’t apply to the kinds of businesses you were talking about if you accept this (common?) distinction between ‘startups’ and other kinds of new businesses.
dean177··on Startup idea checklist
Whenever you see “startup” on hacker news, people are almost always referring to the aim for massive VC funding, exponential growth, get big or die trying types of companies.

Paul Graham wrote an essay which differentiated startups from other new businesses based solely on growth:

dean177··on The New York couple donating millions to the anti-vax movement
> I basically called her a crank

That doesn’t help.

The people that get swept up in these movements have been called similar in the past and if anything it strengthens their resolve when they finally do find that group of likeminded people.

dean177··on Comparing the Same Project in Rust, Haskell, C++, Python, Scala and OCaml
Why would you expect the ocaml one to be shorter?
dean177··on Comparing the Same Project in Rust, Haskell, C++, Python, Scala and OCaml
It mentions that this is almost entirely due to interface files on ocaml’s part. They unfortunately introduce a fair amount of duplication.
dean177··on Experience: I killed my classmate with a javelin on sports day
I find it surprising they had anyone stood in the direction javelins would be thrown.
dean177··on Micro Frontends
You could fetch and cache data into local storage to prevent re-fetching. Depending on how you are set up you could have both apps loaded at once and display one or the other (perhaps lazily loafing the one you don’t need upfront)
dean177··on Amazon.com Credit Builder: Build credit with no annual fee
There is no fee. Having prime gives you the perk of 5% cash back but you don’t need it to get a card.
dean177··on A whirlwind tour of object-oriented code in F# (2012)
Ocaml is getting something similar to ‘do’ syntax very soon (but for applicatives too!):

dean177··on Up to one million species are on the verge of extinction, U.N. panel says
We are not warming the earth slowly. We are heating the planet faster than it has been heated for as far back as we can measure.

Rising sea levels will not only cause trillions in immediate damage, they will displace huge population centres.

That will lead to poverty and ultimately war.

dean177··on The most important software dev skills aren’t technical
10 minutes?

A strategy I have used is: - only lint the files that have changed - only apply lint rules that can be auto-fixed

This usually takes less than a second (short enough that you can't really tell the difference) and the developer doesn't have to do anything .

dean177··on Advent of Code 2018
I have been pretty interested in ReasonML / Ocaml lately, these puzzles are a great oppertunity to get to grips with the basics of a language.
dean177··on Microsoft Pulling Even with Apple in Ranks of Biggest Companies
Maybe you will be interested in a library I wrote:

https://github.com/Dean177/jest-to-match-shape-of

I had the same issue, types don't mean anything if they don't align with the data that your app is consuming. My solution was that matcher combined with some integration tests.

dean177··on XSStrike: XSS detection suite
Submit a PR, the author will definately see it.
dean177··on Is the Touch Bar a gimmick? Two years in, I can answer that
I like having touch id and the brightness / volume sliders and do miss those on my non-touchbar laptop, but thats all i use it for.
dean177··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
It has a generous free tier.
dean177··on Nerve implant 'restores consciousness' to man in vegetative state (2017)
It’s kind of dishonest to share that without also adding that the patient died of a lung infection.
dean177··on Try OCaml
Why was that a dealbreaker for you?
dean177··on Birds Can See Earth's Magnetic Fields, and Now We Know How That's Possible
No imagination required, there is such a visualisation in the article.
dean177··on Pandoc
That seems a little bit extreme, why not just open the issue?
