deafpolygon··on Where the goblins came from
Kind of like how everything is "quietly" something, accordingly to ChatGPT.

My guess is it is deaf.

deafpolygon··on Ask HN: How do solo devs protect their work in the age of vibe coding?
whatever AI you used already hoovered up your algo.
deafpolygon··on Your Terminal Is Burning Battery Like It's Mining Bitcoin
This, among many other reasons, is why I still use Terminal.app. I switched to iTerm for true color, but when Tahoe added it to Terminal.app- I switched back.
deafpolygon··on Windows 11's second-chance setup dialogs hurt IT, drain productivity
> But Microsoft is slick, so it’s always possible they won’t work forever.

That's a very gentle framing. Maybe Microsoft should spend less time being "slick".

deafpolygon··on AI should elevate your thinking, not replace it
> We have people who can still do maths well after the introduction of the calculator.

Arithmetics is a very, very small subset of math.

deafpolygon··on Magic: The Gathering took me from N2 to Japanese fluency
I got 4/5 human. #3 - I chose AI, it was very close.

I noticed something-humans will use words precisely and loosely at the same time. AI will seem like it’s precise but a lot of the wording it uses can be cut or replaced by something else without losing much meaning.

deafpolygon··on Python Is Dead
FYI, a good chunk of the article was LLM-ified.
deafpolygon··on Show HN: Plain – The full-stack Python framework designed for humans and agents
It’s vibe-coded, too. Pass.
deafpolygon··on Bouncer: Block "crypto", "rage politics", and more from your X feed using AI
Then don’t follow them. That’s just encouraging their politics. I mean, vote with your follow.
deafpolygon··on Bouncer: Block "crypto", "rage politics", and more from your X feed using AI
I have an easier solution: just don’t use X.

It does not have anything worth following, and useful content is minimal.

deafpolygon··on The Zettelkasten method in Obsidian
For me, neovim with a few utility scripts cover about 95% of my use-cases in Obsidian... linking is a tiny bit overrated.
deafpolygon··on Midnight Captain – A midnight commander inspired file manager
yazi is great, I’ve had it around for a while… integrates well with neovim and other shell tools.
deafpolygon··on Microsoft is employing dark patterns to goad users into paying for storage?
- false (you have to opt in)

- false (it depends on the app)

- depends on your cloud settings

- if you opt in, yes

- well if your storage is full, you kind of need to know

- they do, it's called time machine. you need a local disk for that.

deafpolygon··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Well, if you’re on a bicycle and you can see the pedestrian is not paying attention (whether they are on the noise-canceling headphones or are deaf themselves)… do the right thing and proceed with caution. Assume they don’t see you and prepare to stop. Wait for visual confirmation that they saw you.

That will eliminate the bulk of traffic “accidents” involving bicycle and pedestrian; it’s expected and common to do this in the Netherlands.

deafpolygon··on Native Americans had dice 12k years ago
That's gonna trigger some gambling addicts.
deafpolygon··on "The new Copilot app for Windows 11 is really just Microsoft Edge"
I think you meant Chrom(e|ium). Chrom{e,ium} expands out to Chrome Chromium. Which isn't what you meant, I think.
deafpolygon··on "The new Copilot app for Windows 11 is really just Microsoft Edge"
That's really pushing the boundaries on what a "minimum viable product" can be.
deafpolygon··on Show HN: Brutalist Concrete Laptop Stand (2024)
go visit any major “third world” country city … probably see those everywhere.
deafpolygon··on Stamp It! All Programs Must Report Their Version
This is not really a huge issue.

Most commercial software gives you a detailed version report.

Either way, the simplest solution would be -v, and -vv and -vvv … don’t do moreversion or lessversion.

The equivalent would be —version —version —version.

deafpolygon··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
Every time I open a browser on my aging Linux computer (which is running the latest Linux updates), I'm reminded of this...
deafpolygon··on LibreOffice – Let's put an end to the speculation
plenty of ways with sqlite. someone just needs to come up with a good front-end without monetizing it.

there's sqlite db browser, but not much challenger in this space because it either gets turned to a saas (notion, airtable) or is a niche dev tool.

deafpolygon··on LibreOffice – Let's put an end to the speculation
If LO ceases to exist, then I will just use plain text typesetting tools.
deafpolygon··on The Free Market Lie: Why Switzerland Has 25 Gbit Internet and America Doesn't
if the internet cabal in the US was actually a free market, you’d be right!
deafpolygon··on Meta, Google under attack as court cases bypass 30-year-old legal shield
yes and no.

there will always be a legal shield for those in power, i.e. the presidency but it will have a bigger chilling effect on freedom of speech against those the conservatives wish to silence.

platforms will become required to police any dissenting voices and shut down any content that the “current” administration deems unsuitable. they have levers they can pull to keep media companies in line.

the issue isn’t what plebs are posting but that the media companies ALLOW these “undesirable” posts to exist (thanks to section 230). without that protection, they will either have to aggressively moderate or disable open comments and communication which is a form of censorship. exactly what the conservatives want.

deafpolygon··on What if the browser built the UI for you?
Front end folks have this weird preoccupation with putting more on the client.
deafpolygon··on GitHub Monaspace Case Study
I want to use proportional fonts, but the terminal fonts don’t support those font grids well.
deafpolygon··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
I have found that you have to keep it centered in order to keep it from moving/registering input, so it worked very similarly to an analog stick to me. Am I mistaken?

I guess I just need to try it some more.

deafpolygon··on SpaceX files to go public
Elon is itching to cash out.
deafpolygon··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
More like, how does gyro help you play some games?
deafpolygon··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
How do you use the gyro sensors to play? I looked into it before but couldn’t wrap my mind around how we’re supposed to do that.
