deadlydose··on Ukraine keeps crossing Russia's red lines. Putin keeps blinking
The only similarity is that it was a surprise and had a psychological impact. The Tet Offensive was massive by comparison.
deadlydose··on Adding 16 kb page size to Android
A page right out of Apple's playbook then.
deadlydose··on Mozilla silently bans 2 anti-state-censorship add-ons in Russia
Settings > About Fennec. Tap the logo five times to unlock the debug menu, then there will be an option to install addons from a file.
deadlydose··on Cold brew coffee in 3 minutes using acoustic cavitation
Risky to buy? It's not real estate it's a cup of coffee. And if you're worried about people faking it, just buy a $2 mason jar and make some in the fridge while you sleep.

I don't get the fascination with paying exorbitant prices and constantly complaining when it's next to zero effort to make it at home, cold or hot. And the best part is you get to choose where your beans come from, you don't have to worry about the political slant du jour of the coffee shop, and you can do it all for a fraction of the price even when using the most expensive beans.

deadlydose··on Claiming high user satisfaction, IRS will decide on renewing free tax site
You understand context, right?
deadlydose··on Mastodon forms new U.S. non-profit
I was thinking Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy as soon as I saw the title.
deadlydose··on LCD displays still don't match the responsiveness of clunky CRT screens (2019)
It was never the weight of them that bothered me it was the uneven distribution of the weight. 40kg isn't much until it's all shifted to one side (the front) of a cumbersome object.
deadlydose··on Cloud host Vultr rips user data ownership clause from ToS after web outrage
> "It's clearly causing confusion for some portion of users. We recognize that the average user doesn't have a law degree,"

I'm no mechanic either but I can identify a flat tire when I see one.

deadlydose··on Starship's Third Flight Test [video]
Pretty sure the first YouTube link you provided is some scammy fake stream.
deadlydose··on Fonts are still a Helvetica of a Problem
Sounds like the FreeType vulnerability that comex exploited for JailbreakMe. I think it was called 'Star.' Try CVE-2010-1797.
deadlydose··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Long time XFCE user here. Steam will absolutely steal focus. I usually start Steam and then move over to something else like the terminal or web browser and multiple times during Steam's startup it will steal focus. I just want it to start up in the background. Aside from that, I agree focus stealing isn't a huge deal in XFCE. (XFCE 4.18, Debian trixie/testing)
deadlydose··on UK to Ban Disposable Vapes
No, it just means you'll need to find a refillable version of your beloved Bubblegum Ice flavor...

> The latest changes would also introduce powers to stop refillable vapes being sold in a flavour marketed at children and to require that they be produced in plainer, less appealing packaging.

...provided it doesn't have an attractive label with pretty colors.

> Error: Cannot find WebGPU in the environment - Updating your browser might resolve the issue!

Using Firefox ESR 115 under Debian (testing). dom.webgpu.enabled is false by default. Enabling it results in:

> NotSupportedError: WebGPU is not yet available in Release or Beta builds. - Updating your browser might resolve the issue!

May I ask why it's required?

deadlydose··on Toronto man uses AirTags to track stolen SUV to Dubai [video]
> As the paperwork was being completed, Mr. Oberholtzer’s son started peeling off the decal on the truck that showed the phone number and name of the company, but the salesman told him to stop because it would harm the paint and said it would be removed later, the lawsuit said.

Seems like they tried but were reassured that the dealership would do it.

deadlydose··on Ozempic Is Making People Buy Less Food, Walmart Says
No, I don't think it would be. The last four digits of a CC purchase at a pharmacy won't contain PHI. It will just say "pharmacy." But if you have some data to back that claim up, I'd love to read about it.
deadlydose··on Unprivileged process injection techniques in Linux
I think this is so users can choose what level of restriction they want using kernel.yama.ptrace_scope with sysctl, 0 being the default and 2 being the most restrictive.
deadlydose··on What makes cheddar cheese taste so good?
Sounds like you didn't get out much. Sometimes I wonder if it's a joke that I haven't been let in on, or just willful ignorance. I hear it not just with cheese, but also bread, beer, chocolate, etc. High quality versions of every single one of those can be found with _minimal_ effort. You have to deliberately choose not to notice all the breweries, bakeries, dairies, and chocolatiers.

"You can't get good ____ in the US!"

Which might be true if you only ever shop at a supermarket or your only exposure to food in the US is a meme, Hollywood production, or the crappy nonsensical 'American' aisles you have in your respective countries.

deadlydose··on Hacking my filter coffee machine
I share your cringe. While I don't use a drip coffee maker anymore, some of the burned flavor can be mitigated by placing 3 coins/pennies on the hot plate to limit contact between it and the carafe. It's worth the $0.03 investment.
deadlydose··on KSP2 is spamming the Windows Registry until the game stops working
> Does Linux have mechanisms to guard against that?

Sure. ulimit or cgroups can.

deadlydose··on Windows 11 has made the “clean Windows install” an oxymoron
This sounds like an Ubuntu problem. My web server is running Debian 12 and ModemManager isn't even installed. For shiggles I installed it just so I could remove it. The extra packages it installed are libjim0.81 libmbim-glib4 libmbim-proxy libmbim-utils libqmi-glib5 libqmi-proxy libqmi-utils libqrtr-glib0 usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data and these are exactly the packages it told me I could autoremove after removing ModemManager.
deadlydose··on US aircraft shoots down new airborne object over Canada
Would you prefer they only shoot down living targets or are you just here for the snark?
deadlydose··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
> Is this balloon incident something the Space Force

Because it wasn't in space.

> shot down by an F-22

Because it was in the air.

> is being recovered by the Navy and Coast Guard

Because now it's in the water.

deadlydose··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
Making a bold and uninformed claim and following it with an admission of ignorance doesn't absolve you of having made a bold and uninformed claim.

> I was hoping for some more informed replies.

You didn't ask for any.

You should email them and let them know how fucking stupid you're making them look on Hacker News.
deadlydose··on India’s first private rocket blasts off successfully

deadlydose··on The utterly delightful site dedicated to classifying plastic bread tags
> what's not to love?

It's a single use plastic with no chance of reuse.

deadlydose··on SpaceX’s Starship launch plan gets an environmental OK from the feds
> So that's one million launches.

In a decade. Not a year.

deadlydose··on SpaceX’s Starship launch plan gets an environmental OK from the feds
> Musk has a goal of 1 million launches per year [2]

Is this a mistake?

FTA: "SpaceX’s goal, according to Musk, is to ultimately send one million people to Mars by 2050"
