deadbabe··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
This view is a little idealistic.

Software Engineers have historically not been very liable even for errors they create by their own hands, and companies tend to operate on a “blameless” engineering culture where there is not really a formal consequence for screwing something up. Your peers may not trust you for a bit, but the trust builds back rapidly as they make their own mistakes and then empathize with your past transgressions.

And in the AI era, this attitude has extended even toward code engineers aren’t writing themselves. Everyone agrees not to protest too loudly if someone commits something wrong because tomorrow it might be you who has done so. The days of “obviously bad” slop code are largely behind us and most recent LLMs tend to put out decent code, so it is very hard to catch problems in review phases, you’d have to be very eagle eyed and that’s not scalable to every employee. It is much easier to let the code run wild for a bit and just be ready to fight fires should they come up.

On some level, you must also be into humanoid robots for the cool factor.

There is no reason to ever have a humanoid, except to make humans feel warm and fuzzy.

deadbabe··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
Nothing wrong with compartmentalization. Some people like it, some people don’t. Just different ways to live your life.
deadbabe··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
Are you doing those things for your own enjoyment though, or to eventually capitalize on it?

And if it’s just for enjoyment, then doesn’t it make sense other people who want the same would just get a job where they can keep pushing things to an AI, feel good, get paid, then quickly get back to the hobbies they really love?

deadbabe··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
What if they start communicating through stegonagraphy? Do we have any chance?
deadbabe··on Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production?
Do you not expose a standard REST api?
deadbabe··on GPT-6 Astra
Plan a holiday, definitely. There are many esoteric things one has to research to properly plan a holiday that I’d rather just not. Some things require reservations months in advance and I’d rather an AI just figure all that out for me ahead of time.
deadbabe··on Nobody has built a software factory
You would use LLMs baked into silicon chips.
deadbabe··on Nobody has built a software factory
I propose a software farm.

Imagine a large multi dimensional grid. Each axis of the grid represents a spectrum of how a specific feature could be implemented. You thus have one axis per feature.

Now you plot a cloud of random points all over the grid and at each point have an agent build a solution where the features are expressed according to the corresponding intensity values at the point.

Now you go through and review the solutions you like, create more points around clusters where you kind of like what is going on, until the perfect product emerges.

deadbabe··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Because I can get on with my life and do my job. Let the legal departments worry about that.
deadbabe··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
I don’t care about what they do, I only care about what they say, that way, when compliance requires us to use LLMs that don’t train on inputs, I can point to that policy and continue on using the LLM.

If they are secretly scraping input prompts, that no longer becomes my problem. Someday, a massive lawsuit comes down, and everyone gets to play the victim.

You’re naive for thinking we don’t know how this really works.

deadbabe··on Fable 5.1 World Modeling
I don’t really care about the real world, I want someone to make a thing where you take scenes from movies and shows and can then walk around in those worlds constructed by AI, to very high fidelity, and maybe in VR. Someone go do this, I’ll be on the lookout for the hackernews article.
deadbabe··on Mushroom hunting with LLMs: what can go wrong?
Giving the impossibly high standards people here have for identifying a mushroom, it’s a wonder that they would eat a mushroom at all. You may not trust an LLM, but how would you even trust yourself? Who would you ever trust?

deadbabe··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
Sounds like unemployment is what he wants.
deadbabe··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
tbh I envy your position, you have a real opportunity to blow people away showing them what real modernization looks like. Like Prometheus bringing fire to humans.

I don’t understand why you haven’t just let an AI agent do all the tasks your incompetent coworkers take months to do.

deadbabe··on Htmx 4.0
Yes but isn’t this the beauty of decentralized protocols? The cost is spread amongst all, it doesn’t require one entity to shoulder the cost for everyone.
deadbabe··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
Wow, I was already imagining a type of ticket printed on some kind of wax paper where one could easily write permanently onto it. Disappointing to hear it was a typo.
deadbabe··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Oh wow but a GPS jammer is okay so someone could get lost and possibly killed, or even crash a plane?
deadbabe··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
It was a long road but it must be nice being able to just spend your time working on one game that so many people love for a living.
deadbabe··on Htmx 4.0
Fortunately for the client, it costs them basically nothing to pay.
deadbabe··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Good way to find engineers who don’t know what they are doing and just fire them, from examining their sessions.
deadbabe··on Htmx 4.0
Who pays it?

And I disagree, we definitely use the same API for other contexts.

deadbabe··on Htmx 4.0
Maybe I’m missing something, but why would you want HTMX server side rendering, rather than a restful API that can return platform-agnostic data structures that you could render in various contexts, like a SPA, or a mobile app, or a terminal app, etc?
deadbabe··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
That’s the thing, the agencies just need to be run by people who are no longer in their right minds.
deadbabe··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
And then powerful local LLMs become feasible and everyone and every government self hosts and the megacorps lose all power.

Imagine the United States DoD, CIA, NSA training an LLM on all its top secret intel.

deadbabe··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
The idea that humans are only worth anything because they're cheaper than machines is a devastating, dehumanizing take.
deadbabe··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
I always get this eerie feeling that if someone has aphantasia, they are possibly also a P-Zombie.

If you cannot visualize things in your mind, and seeing is just transforming light into visual imagery, how do you know you're actually "seeing" anything? The data goes to your brain but you just process the image without actively observing visuals, you just know what's there in front of you, but as data. If you can't see visuals, what else can't you see? Conscious processes?

The analogy to use would be like an LLM's way of "seeing" an image: it describes it into words and then recognizes what it is. A human brain would just do this much faster. Aphantasiac brains.

deadbabe··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
There's a time for cognition and a time for just moving quickly and getting shit done.

Downloading a bunch of open source libraries and putting together some project with a bunch of glue code also requires little thinking, but before AI no one really said that was "cognitive surrender". People even got pats on the back... for using other people's work to build something.
