de_dave··on Hands on with Apple’s Budget iPhone
Aye, this is just an advert disguised as a Gizmodo-style world exclusive 'leak'.
de_dave··on Come on Amazon, give ELB some love
ELB already does weighting, directing requests depending instance type and instance load. Can't find where in the docs this is clarified unfortunately. Have witnessed this with my own eyes though!

Draining is a huge issue for us. Investigating ways to add a secondary layer of balancing behind ELB to help mitigate it, which is completely silly. We shouldn't need to do this. ELB should have supported gracefully terminating connections from Day 1, IMO. Last I heard it was being 'considered'.

de_dave··on FBI Document: [DELETED] had "plan to kill local Occupy leaders via sniper fire"
As always, it would come down to marketing. The secret would be to ensure that the sniper(s) appear to be lone wolves, rather than law enforcement agents. Any protests or occupations could then reasonably be split up on "safety" grounds, and at the same time the Occupy leaders would have to stay out of the public limelight for their own "safety".
de_dave··on Two.js
Not the same - e.g. rotating a set of elements causes each individual element to rotate around their individual centers, rather than causing the group to rotate around a central pivot.
de_dave··on Two.js
Unfortunately Kinetic is (and probably always will be) canvas-based, which is already a limiting factor. Which is unfortunate as it's API is really rather nice and I wish I could combine it with WebGL!
de_dave··on Google Outage
Both apps- and non-apps working fine here in the UK.

From the status page: "This issue is affecting less than 0.007% of the Google Mail user base"

de_dave··on Show HN: Password.ly - Per site password generator from a master password
Even that is not particularly secure since if someone discovers your password is "j8t3$£$hackn", they could easily guess your amazon password is "j8t3$£$amzn" and your reddit pass is "j8t3$£$rddt". Or brute force just those last few chars and benefit from a much reduced search space.
de_dave··on Show HN: Our first Android app, made in 1 week
In my experience submitting an app to Google Play takes 30 minutes, at most, including creation of promotional images and text. And it typically appears within an hour or two (although it used to be immediate).
de_dave··on Ask HN: How do you Backup your Personal Files?
Hourly remote-initiated rsnapshot to MyBook Live NAS on internal network.

Then the NAS performs a nightly sync of selected folders from the latest hourly backup with tarsnap, keeping backups from the last 7 days, last 4 weeks and last 3 months.

de_dave··on Video: Nexus 7 touchscreen defect
There's yet another similar issue with the Galaxy Nexus: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?can=2&sta... (video included!)
de_dave··on If Megaupload users want their data, they're going to have to pay
"The issue is that the process of identifying, copying, and returning Mr. Goodwin's data will be inordinately expensive"

Pretty sure MegaUpload had a nice little interface where, after a 20-second wait, users were granted access to their files. Maybe they could use that.
