ddoran··on The Ketchup Conundrum (2004)
Interesting timing. This article was referred to by a founder of Sir Kensington's ketchup (subsequently condiment) company in an interview on NPR founders series "From Scratch" [1] on Mar 27, 17. He mentioned that this helped confirm their belief that there could be a future in their product/start-up. It was an interesting interview. As is so often the case, they didn't have a clue what they were doing when they started-up, or even that they were "starting up". Recommended.

ddoran··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
And a small European country like Ireland doesn't get its own Amazon store so they have to rely on Amazon.co.uk, where everything is priced in Sterling (not Euro). Irish customers can't avail of Amazon Prime, shipping times take longer etc. A federated Amazon.eu with a continent-wide distribution network may help. Goods priced in Euro certainly would.
ddoran··on Show HN: Learn how to build electronics with monthly kits
The FAQ says that soldering is required on all projects. Online instruction is given etc.
ddoran··on US airline to charge passengers extra to use overhead lockers
Did you read the article? The no-bag fare will be equivalent to today's lowest fares. People carrying bags will pay more. This is not a new lower tier.

> But those who choose the cheapest fare are unlikely to be making any savings. According to Reuters, basic economy fares “will be comparable to low fares it now charges for the economy cabin, but with more restrictions”.

ddoran··on An Unknown Man
This brought to mind the case of Peter Bergmann (an alias). He went to the Northwest of Ireland and took his life by walking into the sea. Before he did so, he made strenuous efforts to ensure his real identity would never be discovered. [cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Bergmann_Case]. I also recommend a short Irish documentary called The Last Days of Peter Bergmann [https://vimeo.com/166977498]
ddoran··on Global Markets, Initially Shaken, Edge Higher After Trump Victory
It's not all positive. Gun makers Smith Wesson [SWHC, -16.13%] and Sturm Ruger [RGR, -14.44%] down massively on the day as Trump supporters won't be rushing out to take arms against a Democrat government they refuse to recognize.
ddoran··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
I'd argue in the face of multi-billion dollar marketing and truthiness by Big Food (e.g. creative ways to include sugar on a list of ingredients to distort the volume of its content) , that many adults also "lack the ability to fully realize what their choices entail".
ddoran··on The Atlas of Early Printing in Europe
> "The Atlas of Early Printing is an interactive site designed to be used as a tool for teaching the early history of printing in Europe during the second half of the fifteenth century." [https://atlas.lib.uiowa.edu/about.php]
ddoran··on How I make $400 a month in Passive Income by Self-Publishing
>But 1-on-1 advising doesn’t scale.

In the right market, it doesn't have to scale. I know some wealthy people (in NYC) who have dropped a lot of money to get their kids into Ivy League schools. It is a must for those people and I've seen them drop high dollar for application advice and prep. With any kind of success, the same people get referred over and over again in the same circles.

As an aside, I loosely know someone who went to prison for a white collar crime. He too hired a high dollar consultant (former prison officer, IIRC) to advise him on how to prepare for, adjust to and survive in prison.

Of course consulting to wealthy people isn't passive, but the return on effort is hard to beat, once you're in the right referral circle.

ddoran··on YouTube enlists volunteers to moderate site via “YouTube Heroes” program
Competitor Group are being sued in a class action lawsuit [0] by a road race volunteer claiming that volunteers were actually laborers being exploited by the defendant and in breach of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Competitor Group argued for dismissal but their arguments were denied and the case is moving forward. So the courts will decide if, despite "knowing upfront" that they were volunteering, such "work" constitutes "labor". This could have a huge impact at (for-profit) races all over the country that rely on unpaid volunteers, not to mention other for-profit entities use of "volunteers", including YouTube/Google.

ddoran··on A Review of Time Series Databases
Time series databases are critical in financial institutions, storing end of day (or much more frequent) marks for example. The advantage of such databases is not just their ability to store temporal data natively, but the built-in functions specific to time-based datasets which would not be atomic in a non-time-based db.
ddoran··on Apple Unveils the Apple Watch Series 2
No matter how much the Apple hardware may catch-up with Garmin etc's capabilities, Apple's closed system is at odds with the data mobility sought by most advanced Garmin/Suunto users that I know e.g. to/from Strava, MapMyEverything, TrainingPeaks etc.

I think Apple will be happy to leave the Prosumers behind and appeal to people who are less active, and maybe even be a first step towards dedicated sports watches. At least for now.

After a year with the Apple Watch as my day-to-day watch and Garmin Fenix 3 for sports (swim, bike, run, hike), I've now switched to Garmin Forerunner 235 for day-to-day and Fenix 3 for sport purely so I can get all of my data into a single repository, easily.

The one killer app I'm missing on the Apple Watch is Siri.

I don't like the announcement and I hate how they've done it. Under the signature on the blog announcement, they've added 13 paragraphs in the HTML source to bury the comments off the page. On OSX Safari and Firefox, I see no way to add new comments. Way to start as a new dawn. I wish I hadn't renewed recently.
