ddnb··on Employer health plans are getting pricier and skimpier
Exactly the same experience here in Belgium, only the doctor visit costs are way higher. Instead of €2 it's more like €25 per visit or I think €35 for home visits. I don't have experience with costs abroad so can't comment on that.

What is correct is that in Belgium you also don't get antibiotics because you ask for them. Only when the doctor deems it necessary you will get it.

Is the US regarded as a "strong democracy"? Surely some can argue just how strong, especially with the effective 2-party system. It gets repeated a lot, the US being the greatest democracy and all, but that doesn't make it true per se.
ddnb··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
I disagree. If somebody asks you "would it be okay if you could do X?" it's easier to say that it's a bad idea, or if it's not a priority, or there could be alternatives, or if this needs to be talked about with the team... It opens up more of a conversation than just saying "Do x".

In comparison, Stardew Valley, a small indy game, also released in 2016 has 4x as many playing but had almost no marketing budget, didn't appear on national television in interviews and certainly didn't get the same hype, but did deliver what he promised and delivered a rock solid game at launch.

I paid €600 a year for my bachelors in Belgium. Where did you get a student debt of $50k?
ddnb··on CRISPR-baby scientist fired by university
I'd suppose governments with a socialised healthcare system would push and invest heavily if it means to lower the cost. Just like most (?) push for affordable medicine in one form or another.

ddnb··on Americans Want to Believe Jobs Are the Solution to Poverty. They’re Not
If anything, nature strives for balance and equality. If the market is as you claim it should be working towards an equilibrium.
ddnb··on What You Need to Know Before Considering a PhD
TLDR: Not every boss appreciates an employee with a Ph.D. If you want to go your own way, start your own business, otherwise you are expected to follow the lead of your boss.
ddnb··on The scientists who starved to death surrounded by food
He gets downvoted because it mainly falls in the same category as homeopathy, so if it has reproducible effects it no longer falls under homeopathy or 'traditional medicine' but just as regular medicine. People have to stop putting faith in this quackery and look at stuff that is tested and proven.
ddnb··on Why We Should Think Twice About Colonizing Space
How are these arguments even valid. If we stay on earth we could just as well kill each other. Nothing changes with going to outer space.
ddnb··on How Venezuela Struck It Poor
Exactly. Not to mention the Soviets were able to beat the US in almost all steps of the space race, starting with the first satellite as soon as 1957! I'd say what the soviet style of economic development was very good for was rapid industrialization from the ground up.
ddnb··on Farewell, Google Maps
Are you talking about the refugees? I was wondering if you have any numbers or sources about them setting out to rob, kill and rape. Here in Belgium you hear about them looking for jobs and learning the language and stuff, never actually met a refugee IRL however. It could be entirely possible that they start robbing and raping after they get home from work ofcourse...
ddnb··on Why Envy Might Be Good for Us
Safety. When people see no other way out they can do anything. Making sure everyone's basic needs are cared for makes it a safer and more stable society for everyone.
ddnb··on Why Envy Might Be Good for Us
> Without envy, there is no point to socialism; if I don't care what my neighbour has, why would I ask the state to enforce its redistribution?

I don't agree, you can ask for redistribution so the weakest in society are helped.

ddnb··on In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
> Where people are essentially born with different values, customs, and ways to behave in society.

When I went to school there was a pretty high number of second generation muslim immigrants, but even there you already saw their strict values eroding. Where their parents were mostly strictly religious, most kids (not all) went partying and drinking, didn't care about wearing veils. A girl from back then, became my neighbour last year and she couldn't care less about religion anymore, they have decent jobs and live life like everyone else here. I'm certain not every immigrant or their kids will adjust as fast, but it's a matter of time, if not this generation, the next. What 'strict' values will my neighbours kid still have from their 'home' country? They won't even be brought up with their religion anymore.

> the ability and capacity to assimilate has been exceeded Has it? Can this be quantified in some way? Just like my anecdote, is this a personal feeling? As I don't feel that way at all.

ddnb··on In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
Are you trying to say the place of birth somehow decides what capabilities you are born with as a human being? Are you saying people born in third world countries are different than people born in first world countries? Because that seems to me to be absolutely ridiculous.
