ddlutz··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
I'm kind of surprised so many people are having issues in this thread. This is probably the only apple product that hasn't caused problems for me. My iPad constantly has weird internet disconnect issues, I have the faulty keyboard on my macbook pro that's just unnaceptable, but never had an issues with the airpod pros.
ddlutz··on Compiling to Assembly from Scratch
I was very much looking forward to this book, pre-purchased it the instant I saw the email it available. I have been enjoying it so far. Best part is that you can follow along with making it in any language, for any input and output language. The author just happens to use Typescript as the language for the compiler, a subset of typescript for the input, and ARM for the output. I'm keeping the same input and output languages for the compiler, but switching to using C++ for actually building the compiler.
ddlutz··on Twitter Engineering:We’re starting with a set of words we want to move away from
As a native speaker, I can almost understand dummy value. But sanity check doesn't seem offensive at all. One definition of sanity is "reasonable and rational behavior."

so sanity check would be checking if the behavior is reasonable and rational.

ddlutz··on Who should own the copyright of AI-generated art?
Does tuning the hyperparameters for the IA count as creative input or human intervention?
ddlutz··on Google Drive Desktop – A cross-platform Google Drive desktop app made w Electron
I guess I just don't get how this is different / better than making a desktop chrome shortcut that opens into a new window? It gives the appearance of running as an independent app.
ddlutz··on My Mid-Career Job-Hunt: A Data Point for Job-Seeking Devs
I had a system design interview for my L4 interview @ Google, it seems pretty typical to.
ddlutz··on Microsoft's GitHub account allegedly hacked, 500GB stolen
When I was in Azure last year we used an internal Git repo named, I think it was named 'onebranch'. There are only two things we posted to a private github.

First was our description of our JSON apis, which would eventually be sent to a public github.

The second was some internal documentation we had for our internal clients. I don't think there were any 'secrets' in there, but it would be documentation for the internal side for internal clients that no outsider could ever use.

ddlutz··on Labs for Rust OS – CS-3210 at Georgia Tech
I would, dependent on the price of course.
ddlutz··on Shirt Without Stripes
Noticed something interesting, if you search for 'shirt without sleeves' in google images, you DO get sleeveless shirts. So why doesn't this work with stripes?
ddlutz··on Introduction to Hacking PostgreSQL (2007)
while not specific to postgres, for general DB internals the CMU courses are top-notch. intro: https://15445.courses.cs.cmu.edu/fall2019/ advanced: https://15721.courses.cs.cmu.edu/spring2020/
ddlutz··on Introduction to Hacking PostgreSQL (2007)
There's an edX MOOC of a similar title that people here may also may be interested in: https://www.edx.org/course/hacking-postgresql-data-access-me...
ddlutz··on Linux Kernel Teaching
That's less than somebody with 0 years experience in FAANG will make. I wouldn't expect kernel developers to get paid much differently than non-kernel developers at a similar level.
ddlutz··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
1. that link returns a 404.

2. Do you have a TOC or expected date for this to be out? Extremely interested!

ddlutz··on Tools you’d miss if you left a company
That depends entirely on what part of MS you are in right? There is cosmos (internal, not exactly the same as external cosmos), autopilot for infra, mdm for metrics, mds for logs, icm for alerts, etc.
ddlutz··on Show HN: GoCode.io – A Golang Game in the Browser
Maybe I'm an idiot, but I don't really get what level two is asking. I "solved it" in one line by directly returning the two numbers it's looking for. But that doesn't seem right at all.
ddlutz··on Slack Is Going Public at a $16B Valuation
So they are worth $1,600 per user? I don't understand how that is possible at all.
ddlutz··on Programming language ray tracing benchmarks project
It sure looks that slow to me.
ddlutz··on Graphical Introduction to Dynamic Programming
I've been through those, and for me it just didn't click. I like the rest of Erik's course though.
ddlutz··on Graphical Introduction to Dynamic Programming
The best resource I've used for learning dynamic programming and actually having it click is the DP lectures from the OMSCS Graduate Algorithms course.

ddlutz··on Seeing AI for iOS
Looks like this is only for iOS, any plans on coming to Android?
ddlutz··on Why I joined Microsoft
I was curious about this myself, but it looks like they are the highest open source contributor on Github according to https://octoverse.github.com.
ddlutz··on Neural Net Side Project Makes $3500/mo Trading Stocks
I'm fairly certain this is in the article: For trading I recommend Kite, mainly for their stable Connect APIs and the low bandwidth. Their limitation is 3 requests per second, and this was more than enough for my new strategy. Getting solid historical financial data isn't cheap, and with so many people hitting the providers to scrape and download data, I don't blame them for limiting the offered information. Intrinio is a good provider for real-time stock quotes at very inexpensive prices. However, getting access to more in-depth data would always yield better results.
ddlutz··on Practical Deep Learning for Coders
Thanks for announcing this, looks amazing! As somebody that's been toying around with deep learning and machine learning, I've been wondering what the steps are to move from 'cool example' to viable product. I know somebody else mentioned something general like that in another comment, but I had a concrete example.

For instance, it's extremely easy to set up an MNIST clone and achieve almost world-record performance for single character recognition with a simple CNN. But how do you expand that to a real example, for instance to do license plate OCR? Or receipt OCR? Do you have to do two models, 1 to perform localization (detecting license plates or individual items in a receipt) and then a second model which can perform OCR from the regions detected from the first model? Or are these usually done with a single model that can do it all?

I'm not sure if answering these questions is a goal of your course, or if they're perhaps naive questions to begin with.

ddlutz··on Show HN: Dijkstra’s algorithm in the web browser with OpenStreetMap
Have you tried this with A* and seen any performance differences? This is very fast in the browser with a small map, but I imagine with a much larger map the difference would be noticeable.
ddlutz··on A Quick Puzzle to Test Your Problem Solving
I tested with real numbers to be curious, just tried 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3.
ddlutz··on Redis re-implemented in Rust
Are you part of the Azure cache service? I was an intern the the Edge Caching and Storage team and joining back fulltime next month. If things are the same way they were it would be worth it exploring using Redis for our cache and I'd like to talk details.
ddlutz··on What is this real-time web you speak of?
I'm disappointed not to see SignalR listed as an option. I've used it and have no complaints.
