ddlutz··on Show HN: C++ virtual_vec vector implementation
You have a large collection of large objects and don't want to allocate on the stack.
ddlutz··on Apple Regrets Confusion over 'iPhone Scanning'
And we all know software never has bugs. Somebody is going to get arrested over this feature for some benign photo one day, I guarantee it.
ddlutz··on Launch HN: Slip (YC S21) – Build and sell interactive programming courses
Any plans for C++ support? I've had some ideas for making C / C++ courses.
ddlutz··on Difficult math is about recognizing patterns
One big problem is the breadth of problems. Most people don't work with graphs, binary trees, dynamic programming, dozens of other algorithms and data structures you don't use ever daily.
ddlutz··on Employers bow to tech workers in hottest job market since the dot-com era
What should one be looking for comp with 6 YoE @ FANG companies in Seattle area? I have a pretty good TC right now @ Google, almost solely due to stock appreciation (was on low end before). I have about 2 years left on my initial grant, and then expecting a massive dip. Is it worth it to switch now? Or wait till dip will hit in 2 years? I feel like it's better to wait and stay a a "sure thing".
ddlutz··on C++ Dev Ecosystem 2021
Maybe you are not working on the right projects or with the right people, because good unit tests are extremely valuable. At a minimum, ensuring that making a change to some existing code doesn't break existing behavior is valuable.
ddlutz··on Building a vision of life without work (2015)
people in 20s and 30s spending usually should go down in retirement, right? Ideally you have no mortgage and depending on your situation save 1.5k-4k a month post-tax right there.
ddlutz··on Podswap: Keep airpods alive and out of the landfill
estimating battery life is hard, it might be due to that.
ddlutz··on Write a time-series database engine from scratch
Have you gone through it? I've seen it around for years, however it unfortunately looks unfinished and unmaintained. I think I'd be unfulfilled going through all of it just to not have a finished tutorial.
ddlutz··on The Untold Story of SQLite
Does anybody have any insight into " at least as difficult if not more difficult than writing a database engine"? It would seem to me that a mail server would be much easier than a database engine.
ddlutz··on Column – High-performance, columnar, in-memory store with bitmap indexing in Go
Is "Matthew" some sort of IT version of "Karen"?
ddlutz··on Show HN: I made a community sourced fitness routine database
If you have some extra income I love my Tonal https://www.tonal.com/
ddlutz··on Introduction to Robotics
I've been trying it every few mins for a while now. Figured it being on the front page must be good. But never loaded once. And no comments.
ddlutz··on How inevitable is the concept of numbers?
Isn't multiplication by 0 natural?

If i'm at a party and everybody wants 2 beers, then if there is 1 person I need 2 beers (1 * 2), 2 people need 4 beers (2 * 2), but 0 people need 0 beers (0 * 2).

ddlutz··on Delaying a Covid vaccine’s second dose boosts immune response
The vaccines are still quite effective after the first dose, and, I'm saying this without being a researcher in this area, should be enough to flatten the curve.

"The Moderna vaccine has been shown to have an efficacy of approximately 92 per cent in protecting against COVID-19, starting 14 days after the first dose." - https://www.who.int/news-room/feature-stories/detail/the-mod...

ddlutz··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
I tried impossible burger once. Wanted to like it for all the good environmental / ethical reasons. However, it just tasted nutty to me, like somebody had ground up some nuts that had a visual appearance very similar to ground beef. Tasted nothing like meat to me.
ddlutz··on Anxiety is in your body, not your mind
What dose do you take? I might give this a shot.
ddlutz··on An Introduction to Lockless Algorithms
I'm curious where this is? Unless you are interviewing for a very specific position that listed lockeless programming as a requirement or you claimed to have 'very advanced multithreading' experience I can't see this being reasonable.
ddlutz··on Raft Visualization
Same! Raft is something I've heard about for years and always "wanted to get around to" learn, but this visualization just took care of most of that. Hoping there are other good visualizations like this in the future.
ddlutz··on When will web browsers be complete?
link to the paper?
ddlutz··on Electric shocks to the tongue can quiet chronic ringing ears
Mine also lasted multiple weeks, due to doctors not taking me seriously with how bad the pain was (even though I showed up at the ER @ 4 in the morning due to waking up from intense pain), and having seen three doctors, including one ENT, getting told it's a virus, bacteria, or fungus. Maybe I'll be as lucky as you and in 2 years it'll be all gone :)
ddlutz··on Electric shocks to the tongue can quiet chronic ringing ears
I'd pay that much if it was guaranteed to cure it forever (minus any new injury that could occur). Been having it since I was 24 with a massive ear infection, it's been hell some days.
ddlutz··on Google's Sundar Pichai says future of office is employee 'on-sites'
I work in the kirkland office. It's definitely VERY (over)crowded there, although I never have seen a desk in a hallway.
ddlutz··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
Is $500k really "average" engineer compensation at top tech companies? That's the average compensation for an L6 at Google, which has an average tenure of 13.2 years https://www.levels.fyi/charts.html. Many people will max-out at L5 in there careers.

Compensation is really good in tech, but I don't think saying "$500k/yr total comp for average engineers" is helping anybody.

ddlutz··on iPad Air 2020
Extremely disappointed it doesn't support the apple pen 1st gen. The apple pen 1st gen is still being sold, and I just bought one 2 months ago to work with my "old" 2017 ipad pro. Why force us to spend another $130 for a 2nd gen pencil when the first gen is essentially just as good.
ddlutz··on Corsair Gaming S-1
I must be the odd one out heree. Lot of people saying good things about their hardware. I've had problems with two of their keyboards, two of their mice, and 2 of their headsets. I've stopped going with them. Have had better luck with Logitech, at least in the mouse department no issue. Have had some issues with headset though.
ddlutz··on Microsoft to continue discussions on potential TikTok purchase in the US
Why is this odd? They seem like very different products to me.
ddlutz··on Unofficial Guide to Datomic Internals (2014)
It gave me a migraine reading half of the article, couldn't continue :(
ddlutz··on Coursera valued at $2.5B after a finance round of additional $130M
I feel the same way about udacity.
ddlutz··on Data structures and algorithms I actually used while working at tech companies
When I was at Microsoft, we used data structures quite often in our service that powered Azure Frontdoor / Azure CDN.

Some of the stuff I personally worked on was tries and nested tries for routing/cache purge, LRU & variants for the caching algorithm on a cache node, and I implemented consistent hashing for the distributed cache.

There were some algorithms stuff for load balancing, but I didn't work on that.

I know there was a few other things, but I can't remember them right now.
