I keep seeing this worry about "who will consume?!!?" This is entirely unfounded - the AI will develop its own marketplace and AI will consume.

The question is, will be there anything left for humans to consume ? will we survive ?

ddalex··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
Like, for sure you can ask the AI to save it's "settings" or "context" to a local file in a format of its own choosing, and then bring that back in the next prompt ; couple this with temperature 0 and you should get to a fixed-point deterministic app immediately
ddalex··on The human only public license
I wonder if the first people that saw a compiler thought "oh no the compiler makes it too easy to write code, I'll licence my code to forbid the use of any compiler"
ddalex··on Accessing Max Verstappen's passport and PII through FIA bugs
a couple of weeks ago Verstappen raced in a "Advanced-amateur" competition in Germany - he had to be "trained" by an official instructor in a restricted car because he hadn't raced there before

I imagine the instructor "What could I teach Verstappen now..."

that's actually the correct use of the phrase "the exception proves the rule"

the rule is that the parking is allowed; the exception is that it's not allowed on Wednesdays; they didn't bother spelling out "parking is allowed at all other times except"

ddalex··on ChatControl: EU wants to scan all private messages, even in encrypted apps
No, you silly man, the politicians are protected from this law, this is just for the plebs.

Did he publish falsified data in a peer review science journal, or did he publish re-interpreted graphs in a scientific literature book intended for the public at large ?

Hi,

I was looking to order, but there is no European shipping. Do you plan to add it ?

Cheers,

ddalex··on Shipping 100 hardware units in under eight weeks
Super nice work ! I'm impressed.

But it seems like a terrible hack - using the phone through the limited interface designed for humans instead of actually using the proper APIs. Not to say that any effort from Apple to improve Siri will just render this product obsolete instantly.

ddalex··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
Exactly
ddalex··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
That was targeted at supporting more tightly integrated and performant Macbooks .... it flopped because Apple came up with M1, not because it was bad per se.

CCS2 is mandatory in europe
ddalex··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
the regulations mandate the CCS2 on the charging point, not on the car

250 meters ? but I want to drive off my street....

ddalex··on Why Romania excels in international Olympiads
Sure, but that's not why he was elected president. Well, not directly.

His Olympiad results led to him getting a doctorate at Sorbonne, which led to him speaking french, which led to impressing Macron who threw France's weight into supporting Dan.

It was a power move to replace the German influence with French influence (previous praesident was ethnic German)

ddalex··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
This is not going to be successful once they demand strong authentication of clients on the server side - the banking apps already do this, you can't have your phone rooted or compromised.

Wait until the authorities will require strong client side authentication for social media sites, news sites, and everywhere user generated content is accepted, tied to official ID issued by the government

Time is money. Or the inverse of money. Ufff, my head hurts.

ddalex··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
> why ancient ancestors started sleeping

I tend to believe that our ancestors didn't start sleeping, they started waking up ! the default pattern is sleep and conservation of energy, but you need to wake up to expend more energy for a short period in order to feed yourself efficiently

ddalex··on I wasted weeks hand optimizing assembly because I benchmarked on random data
I came to the same conclusion months ago with the advent of coding LLMs.... I used to treat code as precious, carefully saving, cataloguing and referencing git commits and SQL scripts and command line histories, because they were painful to write, and thus they are valuable. I mean, they were, because when I had the same need again, I could find previous instances and reuse stuff.

Now ? I just dump the problem into an LLM and it spits up a script that solves it, and then I throw away the script because it horribly bugged for any other case then my particular problem, but hey, I just solved my problem

ddalex··on The original LZEXE (A.K.A. Kosinski) compressor source code has been released
I'm big fan of Monsieur Bellard, not because he made things complicated, but because he made things simple.

I read through the original source of qemu and the tiny C compiler and the simplicity and beauty of the code are outstanding.

ddalex··on A Song of “Full Self-Driving”
They demoed what the operators do, they can only review the data and select one of a few possible options, they never take control of the car
ddalex··on A Song of “Full Self-Driving”
It’s not humorous it’s expected - when you train your system on data from millions of average drivers, why would you be surprised that it behaves like an average driver?

And the average human driver is terrible at driving

ddalex··on A Song of “Full Self-Driving”
Full self driving is either a hard problem - requiring advanced sensors and algorithms; or an easy problem - solvable with cameras and neural nets.

If it's hard, Waymo has an insurmountable lead. If it is easy, everyone can replicate easily what Tesla is doing.

I'm not seeing any strategic moat on Tesla's side

Why do you think the company needs its right to privacy but the customers that deal with that company don't need the right to know who they're dealing with ?

For your startup, aren't you setting up your DNS, webhosting, etc? aren't these small inconveniences that you're doing instead of "focusing on finding product market fit" ?

Each company, nay, each person has to do some amount of "paperwork" in order to create society that functions. Why should your startup admin be easier then my filling of personal taxes ?
