dcrazy··on Transit rewards
Meanwhile, the 47 Muni bus that connects the Van Ness transit corridor to Caltrain has been “suspended” since 2020, and the extension of Caltrain to the transit center is still unfunded.

I appreciate solutions that meet us where we are, but it’s depressing that we don’t seem to actually have the will to make a sustainable, integrated mass transit plan.

dcrazy··on What Sun got wrong
Practically speaking, most of it would sit waiting for a buyer.

This is called string betting and will get you kicked off a table.
dcrazy··on Monsanto's Cruel, and Dangerous, Monopolization on American Farming (2008)
Apple cultivars are interesting because they are often developed by governments motivated to promote the existence of a healthy farming industry, not by private monopoly rights. Case in point, the Cripps Pink (aka Pink Lady) was developed by the Western Australia Department of Agriculture, and the Cosmic Crisp was developed by Washington State University.

(Honeycrisp is another fantastically successful government-funded cultivar, this time by the University of Minnesota. But it apparently led to the spontaneous breeding of the SugarBee, which is privately owned.)

dcrazy··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Your opinion about the “validity” of such a case is not really at home in a thread about _legal standing_.
dcrazy··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
What you think you should be able to do with the data you get back from contacting Amazon’s servers doesn’t impact whether Amazon has standing to sue you over how and why you contacted their servers.
dcrazy··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
There’s a federal WARN act too. Neither the state nor federal versions gives the employees any legal right to try to change the business’s mind.
dcrazy··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Amazon is a party to interactions with their website. That gives them standing to sue over those interactions. Whether they can sue Perplexity specifically is what was being debated in these motions.
dcrazy··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Because David Ellison’s explicit plan is to run Warner Bros. Discovery (owners of CNN) and Paramount (owners of CBS) as two divisions within Skydance Media. He committed to keeping a 20-odd film slate at WBD as part of antitrust negotiations with the U.S. and other countries. So he has to keep the studio running while figuring out how to pay off the investors with depreciating Oracle assets.

This is over a month old, for anyone like me who was confused.
dcrazy··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
I’m saying that compiling Wi-Fi drivers from source is still representative of trying to run Linux on consumer hardware.

Desktop Linux is like a kit plane. You can pay to have someone assemble it for you, but you still need to know how to get in there and fix it.

Ah yes, they’re just holding it wrong.
dcrazy··on Blizzard Workers Win Historic Union Contract
If a union had managed to organize the most profitable-per-employee company in the video game industry, it would have been front-page news.

No, you should fix your code to be compliant with ISO C. The optimizer isn’t going to wait for you to convince WG14.

dcrazy··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
Are you in the U.S.? As an American I use a credit card for nearly 100% of my purchases, on a daily basis. I pay my bill in full each month. I might pay a 2–3% surcharge on a subset of those purchases, but I am reasonably sure I get more than that back in rebates. My Amex offers 2% back on groceries and the grocery store doesn’t charge extra for credit card purchases.

I basically never use my debit card for anything but ATM transactions, and the only time I have any cash in my wallet is when I have recently gone to a cash-only bar or to Las Vegas.

Corroboration: crime on BART dropped when the new harder-to-jump fare gates went in.
dcrazy··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
> Every character, every skill point, every asset in every hangar, every ISK in every wallet was written in Python 2 code, and all of it must read back under Python 3 exactly as it was.

This task would be even more challenging under such a dramatic rewrite.

Then please, do everyone a favor and describe the problem.
dcrazy··on OpenAI restores 5-hour Codex and Work limits for ChatGPT Plus users
It is pathological for their utilization, as in “worst-case behavior.” Like how a program that makes and frees millions of differently-sized heap allocations is pathological for memory fragmentation.

It seems you’ve stumbled into the truth: a lot of things are only worth throwing LLMs at as long as the LLMs are cheap.
