dchasson··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
My dotfiles.

Specifically, I'm working to stop working on them.

dchasson··on How to make a Smith chart
Terrifying. My nightmares will return.
dchasson··on Ask HN: Can Calculus be taught without differentiating or integrating by hand?
Physical experiments.
dchasson··on Ask HN: Can calculus be taught without differentiating or integrating by hand?
Physics
dchasson··on Restoring a $25k Convergent Technologies Miniframe CTIX Unix Computer [video]
Why?
dchasson··on Starlink lost 40 satellites to a geomagnetic storm
A reminder that space weather affects years of human efforts not just the satellites we launch now. I hope that there is much to learn from 40 failures.
dchasson··on Let's Settle This
This is a fun product
dchasson··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
With you on that. I think having a workplace is a benefit of having a job. The cognitive load of pretending that you are at work, without any benefits of having a OSHA/legal workplace, is a cost that gets put on the worker. Companies should, at the fucking minimum, provide a stipend if they arent going to provide a workplace. Not to mention the skills that the employee loses by working at home, getting burnt out or over-worked, and then suffer and are paid less when they change jobs. But.... Burnout happens, since I was a child.
dchasson··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
Zoom improves when you stop using it.
dchasson··on NixOS Linux
I enjoyed learning the difference between NixOS, nix (eg, nix-build, nix-env,...) Nix Language, and nixpkgs.

Knowing the difference of tools in the belt is like knowing the blades themselves. You can always make your own tools.

If I can't package something with nix, then I call it "metal"

dchasson··on Teddit: a free and open-source Reddit front end focused on privacy
Something needs this, but not me.
dchasson··on Run Homebrew Natively on Apple Silicon Arm M1
Its why does this have to be a thing now? Did anyone want this? Honestly, I have not heard anyone asking for it before or after it was released. If it's ambiguous, then why is this at top of HN?
dchasson··on We’re Optimizing Ourselves to Death (2019)
To say little of perfectionists/analysis-paralysis
dchasson··on Room-Temperature Superconductivity Achieved for the First Time
I'm wondering, doesn't the concept of temperature change with pressure? For example, homemade fusion reactors operate at low pressures but at a temperature higher than the sun. So, if this circuit is operating at a high pressure, then isn't surrounding room temperature relatively low? At the mechanical level, a substance held between carbon diamond anvils isnt free to change momentum or kinetic energy due to the kinetic impacts of room temperature air, vapor, or plasma.

Second question, do virtual particles have the same Casimir effects in this apparatus, as we would see in low pressure experiments? If you're interested, also checkout the results published recently on measuring the Casimir force. Reference: “Casimir spring and dilution in macroscopic cavity optomechanics” by J. M. Pate, M. Goryachev, R. Y. Chiao, J. E. Sharping and M. E. Tobar, 3 August 2020, Nature Physics. DOI: 10.1038/s41567-020-0975-9

dchasson··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
Tragedy of the commons. A problem waiting for a solver
dchasson··on Scientists say a mind-bending rhythm in the brain can act like ketamine
Could this be explained by the photo electric effect? I mean beaming energy through brain cells until the mouse has brain damage might be a better explanation for sudden loss of mental function.
dchasson··on Ask HN: Are there any software jobs in nature/animal conservation?
I learned from your perspective here. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Interesting, because this trade study could be conducted by an engineer and a manager in a small company and still have starkly different results in the weighing of concerns.

Most of my early career was solo. I recognize the importance of a good team, but as a business you (even non profits and myself solo) have to understand the bottom line for all stakeholders.

If anyone else could expand on this person's ideas, please do!

dchasson··on Dianne Feinstein's reply to constituents' opposition to EARN IT act
Certainly, as an almanac writer, he would not give up anything based on "media reports"
dchasson··on COVID-19 Supply Chain Update
So they aren't predicting anything, are relying on manufacturers to self report, already have surprise shortages, and are monitoring and mitigating? These statutory authorities and responsibilities to assure blah blah blah, that doesn't give permission to prepare or ramp up requirements?

"Implementing critical infrastructure monitoring" is giving out an email address? Hmmm.

dchasson··on Sun's surface seen in new detail
This news is stunningly correlated to my lecture this morning from Dr Bailey at Virginia Tech. The man was in Alaska finishing the launch of his sounding rocket for NASA.

The ideal gas law dictates these amazing structures of the solar atmosphere. But.... incredible cosmic magnetic powers influence these structures in the solar atmosphere... That we still can't explain.

Later I hope to discover alien life in the distributions of charged particles and their induced magnet fields... I may need to aquire another degree in the mean time.

dchasson··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a worker any more I want to be a professional
Professions are practiced
dchasson··on So you want to write a type checker (2014)
alright hacker news, how did you know what I've been doing for 16 hours?
dchasson··on New California plan would split state in three
Humor follows: Strange to say a plan would split California into 3 and solve the human linked tickets. Especially, when considering over 100 years of Americans alone splitting California into pieces (without github issues). I would prefer to see the surprises of a California United with the States, than any more division of human linked tickets. I hypothesize that humans in California are responsible for the majority of outstanding open issues in open source software, and as an Oregonian, I insist that California start closing TODOS before it starts forking itself.
