dcdc123··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
My wife and I travel together full time so we connect to a lot of new networks. Sadly the feature is so buggy it is almost useless to us. Probably one in three tries it just hangs the receiver's UI making it so they cannot cancel, enter password, etc. We avoid using it now.
dcdc123··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
If you are using a state manager with models in something like rails/django/etc then it is trivial to support soft deletion without it infecting your entire code base.
dcdc123··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
I've suggested this to every AirBnB I have stayed in. Sadly I am up to about 75-100 of them and have come across this a grand total of zero times.
dcdc123··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
iOS lets you share wifi passwords with someone else around you if they are trying to connect. I _think_ it uses your AirDrop privacy settings so for most reasonable people it would only work for people in their contact list.
dcdc123··on Atlassian is 20 years old and unprofitable
Their software also gets worse with every update.
dcdc123··on Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code?
Did you know that the first of the two configuration options for Copilot is an option to allow or disallow it to suggest samples that match public code?

dcdc123··on The bait-and-switch hidden in today’s cookie announcement
> The government said the change will cut down on “the irritating boxes users currently see on every website”.

Hate to break it to you but we have no laws for them in the US and we have the stupid popup on almost every site.

dcdc123··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
I feel like you missed an opportunity.

dcdc123··on What did Earth look like X million years ago?
No, it does list the dinosaurs, it is just a very limited database. Most cities I tried had none but Dallas, TX for example listed a few.
dcdc123··on Be Real – App that notifies friends simultaneously to capture and share a photo
Oooh, I thought you were calling me a liar.
dcdc123··on Cat S22 Flip Phone
I feel like most people that want flip phones want something reliable and durable. I don't think shoving Android onto a tiny screen in a flip form factor accomplishes this.
dcdc123··on Be Real – App that notifies friends simultaneously to capture and share a photo
Lie?
dcdc123··on Be Real – App that notifies friends simultaneously to capture and share a photo
This sounded fun but I was immediately turned off due to the first two questions being full name and birthday. Maybe it’s required due to regulations somewhere but that’s not the type of thing I am willing to give out to try an app.
dcdc123··on The growing discontent behind Nintendo’s fun facade
To be real honest, without doing any research, I already assumed working for NOA would be miserable.
dcdc123··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
They only sell parts for phones that are probably still under warranty or Apple Care+ coverage. They don't sell parts for any models that actually need reliable sources for parts.
dcdc123··on Ask HN: How can I best assist my wife with a career transition?
A lot of non-developers at Ed tech companies are/were teachers. Not sure if that is helpful.
dcdc123··on How Intelligent Are Cats? (2004)
There is at least one [0] myth that has never had scientific standing or proof stated as factual in that article, so take it with a grain of salt. Several other statements seem iffy to me but I do not know enough those specific subjects to know for sure.

dcdc123··on The legal implications of remote working cross-border
Was it looking out for you or for your employer? There are two things to consider - whether or not your employer needs to withhold versus whether or not you need to file. Lots of states are much more lenient to employers but still very strict to the employee. It is pretty common for a worker to need to file while the employer does not need to withhold or face nexus.
dcdc123··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
I think the idea was to give an hour of light later in the day for when people are off work.
dcdc123··on The legal implications of remote working cross-border
Almost every state considers any income for work done while you are physically within the state as income sourced from the state. This means you pay taxes whether you are a resident or not. Most states have some sort of threshold, either number of days or earned income. For tech workers you are likely to hit earned income thresholds pretty much instantly as it is usually prorated according to the number of days you are in the state. That said, a huge number of people just commit tax fraud by never paying or filing. Mostly only CA and NY spend any significant resources identifying and pursuing these people.
dcdc123··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote (2010)
It was a meeting about a new service/product relevant to the services he provides his clients. It doesn’t seem that weird, especially if he saw his responsibility to then to be similar to that of a level or agent.
dcdc123··on All You Zombies
I didn't realize it either. As I was reading the wikipedia article I kept thinking this sounded familiar then started to remember bits of the movie.
dcdc123··on The underground economy of solitary confinement
He never talked about the other type of fishing...in a lot of prisons they are in rooms with doors, not bars. Inmates will pump out the gas traps in their toilets and drop lines into the shared plumbing with things tied to help them get tangled. They can then pull the lines through and tie stuff to them.

dcdc123··on FAA says 5G could impact radio altimeters on most Boeing 737s
EU C-band rollouts are 200Mhz lower than in the US, making for almost twice as much gap between them. That said, EU is still starting to get worried [0] after some tests showed malfunctioning equipment can cause interference.

dcdc123··on IRS to adopt Login.gov as user authentication tool
That's assuming what's in the repo is the same code that is deployed.

Only 3 percent?
dcdc123··on Netflix will falter
They also have the most responsive streams by a mile. Seeking on Netflix is so much less painful than their competitors...especially AppleTV.
dcdc123··on Removing trucks could be almost 'impossible,' say heavy towing experts
From the article:

> Heavy-duty tow trucks can transfer air from their system to the trucks to release the brakes, Allen said. Failing that, they could "cage" the brakes, which involves manually backing the brake off each individual wheel.

"We have all the capabilities on our tow trucks to do it … but I don't think anyone would want to," he said.

That's because many companies who provide heavy towing would be hesitant to risk their relationships with trucking companies, Allen said.
