dbond··on I got hired at a Bangladesh sweatshop. Meet my 9-year-old boss [video]
And the exploitation of poverty sustains it.
dbond··on Ask HN: What are HNs views on Marijuana/ Medical Marijuana?
Falls under my opinion on personal freedoms, if your not hurting anyone else, do whatever the hell you want.
dbond··on Quit my job to make this iPad app
If you haven't spoken to spotify about this you might want to double check that, any usage of libspotify requires premium, these terms still apply.
dbond··on Quit my job to make this iPad app
Looks good, nice to see spotify integration in an app. Though I'm curious as to how you're getting around section 3.3 of the libspotify (assuming its use) terms of use, or if you didn't know about that then I'm here to throw a warning at you...

3.3 You may not sell the Application, charge Users for
use of the Application or otherwise derive any income
from Users’ use of the Application, such as through e-commerce
initiated via the Application or the sale of any advertising,
sponsorships or promotions on the Application itself.
Not trying to be that guy, but having your spotify streaming access revoked could leave you with some angry customers :)

There are also some smaller clauses in there that may restrict the streaming from multiple providers. These terms don't seem to be based on any kind of logical reason though.

dbond··on Ask HN: Someone just tried to break into my home. Security tech recommendations?
Someone care to explain the flagging? A dog is a perfectly good addition to home security and personal security. They will serve you much better during an actual situation than gadgets you have lying around...

Or did I offend the owner of a handbag dog?

dbond··on Ask HN: Someone just tried to break into my home. Security tech recommendations?
This. I'll always feel safer with a dog I trust than any technological protection/deterrent. Well apart from the yappy ones rich women carry in bags...
dbond··on How Flow-Based Programming Could Save The Sanity Of Web Developers
We're building something very similar, aiming to have demos and beta by new year.

dbond··on Github now supports rendering tabular data
Have you tried http://prose.io/ ?
dbond··on Detaining my partner: a failed attempt at intimidation
The public would, politicians not so much...
dbond··on Ask HN: Is our criticism of surveillance not a bit hypocritical?
From Google's perspective, true. Does google actually sell the aggregated data though?
dbond··on Ask HN: Is our criticism of surveillance not a bit hypocritical?
There is quite a difference between them, google analytics on your website would be more akin to an individual shop tracking the people who walk inside. I think a better comparison for these "tracking bins" would be your ISP logging your traffic and selling metrics to third parties. The key difference here is that it was public, in a place you thought you wouldn't be tracked, ever.
dbond··on Mega to run ‘cutting-edge’ encrypted email
Email is pretty bad, but its not going anywhere so we should try to fix it.

The service would remain store-and-forward but the content would be encrypted throughout, something which is not currently possible without both parties knowing how to setup and use PGP.

dbond··on Mega to run ‘cutting-edge’ encrypted email
This is why it really needs to be done at the protocol level, an email provider can't change the behavior of my desktop client and the process could be completely automated for the average user.
dbond··on Mega to run ‘cutting-edge’ encrypted email
Yea, I'd imagine it to be a shinier version of hushmail with lots of sketchy marketing thrown in...
dbond··on Mega to run ‘cutting-edge’ encrypted email
I've only read the RFCs for email protocols once, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. But the only way email is ever going to be truly secure is if extensions are added to the current protocols to add end to end encryption of the message body. Otherwise there's always going to be a third party arm for law enforcement to twist where the message is in plain text for a short time.

Also you can't trust the guy, I'd trust him to host illegal material because he wants it to stay up, but what happens when governments start offering bribes to hand over my emails?

dbond··on Ask HN: Find a PR person for our press release
We're in a similar situation, from a quick googling I think we'd prefer to work with someone like you over an agency, do you mind being contacted at the address in your profile?
dbond··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
A lot of the time (for me) things that first seem like missing knowledge are just missing terminology.
dbond··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
Can we just agree that university isn't the only method of learning?

You either have the knowledge/skills or you don't.

dbond··on Cyberscare: Ex-NSA chief calls transparency groups, hackers next terrorists
witches -> communists -> terrorists -> hackers...
dbond··on NPM is down
Not completely down, very slow today though.
dbond··on Is Github down?
Yep
dbond··on Zynga sues sex app maker over Bang With Friends name
Doesn't the infringement have to be in the same category as the trademark? A dating app seems quite far from games.
dbond··on Psd.rb
Several years ago while writing a PSD parser in javascript, that comment block saved my sanity.
dbond··on Why I willingly handed over my credit card and PIN to a fraudster
Not really, actually mugging someone would be a lot of risk for unknown and surely lower return. What these guys are doing won't work all the time, but when it does the return is very high as they can steal money you don't even have if they get a credit card. They also wouldn't have to deal with any issues like getting caught by CCTV, a group of well wishers or the ever elusive police patrol.
dbond··on Ask HN: Where do you host your NodeJS applications?
Have used Heroku, Dotcloud and AWS Elastic Beanstalk, all with good results.

Also hosting a few private apps on a digital ocean vps using dokku[1] which is working pretty well so far.

dbond··on Ask HN: Save Github: Improve Github's availability
I don't think many will leave unless it causes issues in deployment.

It would be nice if githubformac/windows could cache the wiki and issues for my starred/cloned repos automatically, this would be more than enough to satisfy me personally.

dbond··on Ask HN: What's the best site/app that you use to manage your money?
Its also on sale on steam at the moment. 34% off.
dbond··on Pokémon: Generations Windows game
http://pokemmo.eu/

Would this be what you're looking for? Basically turns pokemon red into an mmo, even uses ROMs for the content.

dbond··on What if hackers ran Washington?
Water was just listed as one of the items we need to survive as opposed to something we want, we pretty much already have it in abundance in the first world.

I'll admit I used to have the same view on this, where is the incentive? Why would someone do something without this immediate reward system? But it is this problem which I think would create the best (or at least most interesting) results. Without immediate reward the farmer will stop farming, why should he keep working for others? Agriculture then becomes a problem for society to solve in the most efficient way possible instead of a status quo job for a few individuals. In going back to the original point of this page, imagine the hacker community's response to that, a real, important problem to solve.

So to answer your last question, with the lack of currency/money there is no difference between them, the only form of advantage to be gained is in your social standing (interesting implications on leadership here), using your skills to help others and solve societies problems is your only way to gain any advantage over others.

dbond··on What if hackers ran Washington?
Debt exists because of scarcity. Removal of currency/money and the concept of personal profit can be used to create abundance of our needed resources (food, water and shelter). This isn't magically caused by the removal of currency but by the changes in behaviour that tag along.

In agriculture for example, the current business goals are like any other, the most profit with the least expenditure. In an environment where the concept of profit is foreign the goal becomes how do we feed the most people with the resources available.

This would be a very different environment to what we have now, there would be a whole host of other changes to support this. It would be an extremely long process to ween off the concept of money/debt and create the infrastructure for something like this but I believe it is very possible.
