dblooman··on Apple announces ‘One More Thing’ event for November 10th
The 16inch MBP has replaced pretty much every laptop at work this year. I know we were holding off because nobody wanted the old keyboard. These will last 3+ years, so Apple have some time to screw around and get software updated while companies stick with old hardware. I hope they announce when they will stop making intel MBPs, as that is the real date when Apple silicon becomes real for most people.
dblooman··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
Not knowing anything about big pharma, does Astrazeneca make all the money here? How much does a vaccine like this cost per person given the scale of the distribution and manufacturing?
dblooman··on Terraform at Scale
If you take the time to write a PR for a project, chances are you have taken the time to read the contributing guide and have tried to submit a passing pull request. There are conventions that may apply to a massive code base, such as those on some of the big providers that not initially clear, so I think spending some time in ensure that you explain why they haven't had a PR merged is worthwhile. Sometimes a PR can be ignored completely.

I guess it depends on whether you want people to try and contribute to your project or whether you insta close the PR because they missed a semi colon, which it seems would be your approach.

dblooman··on Terraform at Scale
One thing I would like to hashicorp do is take pull requests more seriously address them within a certain time period and help new Go engineers with tips on how to finish their PR's for terraform providers. The AWS provider is an example of lack of engagement, leading to stale PRs. At the same time, hashicorp love to shout about day 0 support for a big cloud feature.
dblooman··on HomePod Mini
Have you tried the echo studio, probably not. If you are streaming music, I wonder if you could tell the different between the echo studio and the homepod in terms of price. They don't sound the same, but the quality is very good for those not looking for an audiophile setup. The studio is a lot of speaker for the money and offers better voice assistant. Apple made a nice thing in the home pod, but it isn't any special...yet

We use it for artifactory to support scala services. S3 based solutions aren't as good, though jfrog isn't without its faults.
dblooman··on New Microsoft Edge
I found when using Ublock origin, when edge imported my extensions, it used the edge version, which has slightly different behaviour than the chrome store version. Install from chrome web store if you see inconsistent results
dblooman··on Apple Plans to Announce Move to Its Own Mac Chips at WWDC
Having tried Windows on ARM with the surface, I was surprised that many apps I use every day were not available. Perhaps Apple will be better at onboarding developers to the transition, but will also be interesting to see how long developers continue to support Intel. Can anyone speak as to the difficulty of working with ARM and Windows?
dblooman··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
If the question was, Why is kube getting so popular with developers, it might get a different response. I wonder how many software developers come to kubernetes through the templated/helm chart/canned approach made by there DevOps team, not that this isn't a fine approach, but I find it a different conversation to say, Serverless, where anyone can just jump in.

After spending 18 months working on bringing kubernetes(EKS) to production, with dozens of services on it, the time was right to hand over migrating old services to the software engineers who maintain them. Due to product demands, but also some lack of advocacy, this didn't happen, with the DevOps folks ultimately doing the migration and retaining all the kubernetes knowledge.

An unpopular opinion might be that Kubernetes is popular because it gives DevOps teams new tech to play with, with long lead times for delivery given its complexity. Kubernetes usually is a gateway to tracing, service meshes and CRDs, which while you don't need at all to run Kubernetes, they will probably end up in your cluster.

dblooman··on How not to hire a software engineer
What i've noticed recently with interviewing candidates is some lack the ability to work outside the way they work normally, especially in practical tests.

Things like, "I usually work from home, so its too difficult to concentrate in this meeting room", "I use Windows, so writing code on a Mac is really hard" and the most common for some reason for why the technical exercise isn't working "Intellij usually saves the file for me"

Practical interviews are difficult to get right on both sides, but from the side of the candidate, I feel there has to be some ability to handle those situations, under pressure, with confidence.

dblooman··on The meaning of AMP
I have found some sites have made the "main" site better than AMP in terms of speed and download, but because its often the first result, sometimes you get an inferior experience. As someone who built and deployed the bbc news amp experience, i didn't really know how it was going to be used, but i would have raised serious concerns knowing what we know now.
