Unfortunately portable tape players are becoming quite hard to find: Stranger Things and Guardians of the Galaxy have create a huge demand for some Sony walkmans, whose prices are now in the triple-digits.
I researched a similar device some time ago and I only found "We Are Rewind" selling a "modern" tape player but from what I understood the sound quality is not on-par with the best portable tape players from the 90's and such.
I completely resolved the issue by flashing the mainline OpenWRT image from openwrt.org. It has been working pretty well ever since.
> GrapheneOS have put huge effort into de-googling
They are doing great work but they're still depending on google for maintaining Android (Can GrapheneOS do anything against a feature pushed by Google in Android 13/14 and so on? Nope).
> Cameras work
You still lose all the post-processing stuff which account for a good portion of perceived picture quality.
Professional musicians or even hobbyists prefer to buy several specialized devices that do one thing very well instead of having a very expensive device that can do a little bit of everything but with some limitations.
Though the updating process can be more streamlined, I had to redo all my configuration when updating from openWRT 19 to latest 21 (could have been my own mistake during flashing, at least I have firmware updates).
The current Pinephone has almost all of that right now (desktop firefox run very well, messaging works - MMS too -, video calls works in the browser).
> One that works with at least a good bunch of most common apps.
That's on the "most common apps" devs to do the work, and they are very unlikely to do so.
You could use something like Waydroid on the Pinephone to run some Android apps in a stable-ish way (SailfishOS has a similar feature).
It feels perfectly right in my hand, the 3d printed texture is fantastic and the qmk firmware allows a level of customization you will never see on more consumer-oriented products.
Some drawbacks I can think of are the mouse wheel placement and feeling, the USB type B connector and the included ball that is not perfectly round (there is some sort of tiny nub on top of it that can interfere with the bearings).
A gaming computer with a 1000 watt power supply will reastically have a 50W idle load. It's only if the CPU and GPU are fully utilized (like in a gaming scenario) that it might draw several hundreds of Watts.
But marketed directly to the people that buy all the "normal" laptops out there, it could be a great success.
Free software has always been political but judging by the reaction here and on the github commit, its philosophy is becoming less and less vocal.
Among the games that did run flawlessly for me are The Witcher 3, Skyrim, GTA 5, numerous indie games (Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Northgard, etc.) and so much more!
