dbcooper··on TSMC Kicks Off Volume Production of 7nm Chips
7nm is really just a node name. Gate length is probably about 20nm. Still very impressive though!
dbcooper··on How to Be the Startup Hero by Tim Draper (free on Kindle for 24 Hours)
Also the Theranos defender.
dbcooper··on How to Be the Startup Hero by Tim Draper (free on Kindle for 24 Hours)
Give your money to Theranos! Alternatively, see who your children know from high school.
dbcooper··on The Rise of Dismal Science Fiction
Altered Carbon treats the brain as a computer that can have its hard drive swapped out. That's really stupid and a good reason to ignore it. It's also particularly poorly written.
dbcooper··on Oil-Rich Saudi Arabia Is Turning to Nuclear Power
Looking forward to the apocalypse, sparked by the most responsible Islamic country in the world!

The American Empire is so full of political science geniuses.

dbcooper··on Intel Fights for Its Future
A key point missed in this discussion is that Intel needs high volume through its fabs to pay for their high capital investment requirements.

If it doesn't have the consumer CPU volumes (notebook, desktop, mobile) then production costs for server chips will be much higher, and it won't have those nice margins.

dbcooper··on Pearsons, Who Pledged $100M to UChicago, Want Their Money Back
According to the article, this isn't the first time they've done this:

>The Pearsons are no strangers to lawsuits regarding their philanthropic contributions. In 2011, Thomas Pearson sued Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, his father’s alma mater, alleging that a $1.2 million gift made in their name to the Methodist seminary had been misused. The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ultimately ruled that the Seminary had respected the terms of the contract and dismissed all of the Pearsons’ claims.

My hunch is that they grossly overestimated what a political science department could do to "reduce conflict around the globe".

dbcooper··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
The graph has no units. How has demand for electrical energy (kilowatt hours) changed?

The title of the paper is "Acne Vulgaris - A Disease of Western Civilization."
dbcooper··on BitConnect Closes Exchange as States Warn of Unregulated Sales
>other exchanges (of dubious reputation

Yeah, HitBTC has the most volume, and it has a terrible reputation. See all the reports of "maintenance issues" when a coin traded there can be sold at a higher price on another exchange.

dbcooper··on California has the highest poverty rate in the USA
This paper is pretty interesting too:

Why Has Regional Income Convergence in the U.S. Declined?

>The past thirty years have seen a dramatic decline in the rate of income convergence across states and in population flows to wealthy places. These changes coincide with (1) an increase in housing prices in productive areas, (2) a divergence in the skill-specific returns to living in those places, and (3) a redirection of unskilled migration away from productive places. We develop a model in which rising housing prices in wealthy areas deter unskilled migration and slow income convergence. Using a new panel measure of housing supply regulations, we demonstrate the importance of this channel in the data. Income convergence continues in less-regulated places, while it has mostly stopped in places with more regulation.

Works pretty well on Firefox for iOS, but it blocks twitter embeds (sometimes just their images and other media content).

dbcooper··on Can anyone make money on the moon?
There’s no carbon on the moon. Unless you can harvest large numbers of comets, habitation at scale is impossible.

Don't set the UI density to "touch" then - tab closing animation is very clunky.

dbcooper··on China's Silk Road Illusions
The only reasonable way to look at it is from the perspective of the transfer of goods along the silk road from China to central asia. That is the way the article was written.

You were fundamentally wrong, and remain wrong.
