dbacar··on Emacs and Vim in the Age of AI
I dont know what the deal is with these editors that makes them on HN front page so frequently. In my opinion they are good text editors (used emacs for 4 years, and switched to vim nearly 10 years ago) but for coding I see them as a joke apart from some edge cases(clojure, lisp...). They are hard to setup as code editors, lots of customizations are needed and in my opinion it does not pay off.
dbacar··on I audited the privacy of popular free dev tools, the results are terrifying
That is a risk I can calculate and take. The trackers are sth else.

Sometimes the style is the substance. There is a reason people study rhetoric.

Glad that I am using Firefox with:

Any additions to my arsenal welcome!

dbacar··on Show HN: Clocksimulator.com – A minimalist, distraction-free analog clock
Excellent, maybe an addition for protection from display burn-in would be nice. I dont know. Congrats.
dbacar··on EDuke32 – Duke Nukem 3D (Open-Source)
From the website: "PC first person shooter Duke Nukem 3D— Duke3D for short—to Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, several handhelds, your family toaster, and your girlfriend's vibrator. "

Why they go this route is beyond me :)

dbacar··on A terminal weather app with ASCII animations driven by real-time weather data
Lovely project.

Yet checking out "cargo install weathr" and is it me or rust is becoming the next nodejs? :D

dbacar··on 14-year-old Miles Wu folded origami pattern that holds 10k times its own weight
And this is all you can come up with this story?
dbacar··on MinIO repository is no longer maintained
It was not expectation when they started, did a lot to lure many into the ecosystem. When you release it free, wait for the momentum to build, then you cut off, it is something else. And the worse is they did it in a very short time. Check out elasticsearch, the same route but did not abandon the 7 release like this.
dbacar··on Rari – Rust-powered React framework
"Rust-Powered Performance

Native speed with Rust compilation for blazing-fast builds and runtime"

It seems only Rust itself compiles slow while helping others brag about it :).

dbacar··on Show HN: LocalGPT – A local-first AI assistant in Rust with persistent memory
Given the fact that it is only a couple of months old, one can assume things would break over here and there for some time before investing heavily.
dbacar··on Vocal Guide – belt sing without killing yourself
Yes everyone can sing, but not everyone can be listened to :).
dbacar··on Lessons learned shipping 500 units of my first hardware product
580w. So long for the low-power leds then :)
dbacar··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Agreed, especially when you also hear the actual sounds of the environment. I wish I had a bigger screen, would feel much more immersive.
dbacar··on Sometimes your job is to stay the hell out of the way
> Wolves don’t care if they are seen or not. Wolves are entirely focused on the self-selected essential project in front of them

The wolves analogy is simply wrong. Wolves work in packs.

dbacar··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Apart from some lucky places, most of the world cities looks like this or worse.
dbacar··on Mousefood – Build embedded terminal UIs for microcontrollers
Hi Orhun, Could it be used with CYD (Cheap yellow display) ?
dbacar··on Google AI Overviews cite YouTube more than any medical site for health queries
What about the answers (regardless of the source)? Are they right or not?
dbacar··on FOSS "just fork it" delusion
Yes if he mentioned the cases like opentofu that would be better.
dbacar··on FOSS "just fork it" delusion
It is not click-bait. The article does not describe the situations like opentofu or mysql.
dbacar··on Predicting OpenAI's ad strategy
The ads stirs the already murky waters of trust for the answers you get.
dbacar··on Show HN: Speed Miners – A tiny RTS resource mini-game
all manual, and auto move and auto upgrade should be listed in different standings...
dbacar··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
There are different opinions on this:

dbacar··on Why is the Gmail app 700 MB?
Gmail android size is also ~750MB.
dbacar··on Why is the Gmail app 700 MB?
It is bloatware for a reason, to force you a cloud subscription, not for your money (which helps though) but your data.
dbacar··on Pipe Dreams – The life and times of Yahoo Pipes (2023)
There was some other tool also, I guess called Dapper.

A similar experience is Apache Nifi for the curious.

dbacar··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
Emacs what?? Let's start an editor flame war, under a completely different editor wars :)) Yes i am a VI man.

Just joking, I really mis the org-mode.

dbacar··on Attention Is Bayesian Inference
Writing is repetitive, making lots of general false claims out of personal feelings etc... I guess this is enough to criticize a chatbot output.
