dayofthedaleks··on Replacement PCB Replicates Early 80s Modem
Take it to your next local HAMfest!
dayofthedaleks··on I'm eating raw chicken every day for 100 days – or until I'm hospitalized
He may have innate or adaptive immunity to salmonella already. I wonder how many dice rolls it would take to hit one of the antibiotic-resistant strains that are able to prevent immune system response.
dayofthedaleks··on Venture capital firm General Catalyst to buy Ohio health system Summa Health
I'd guess they've earmarked a bunch of additional 'venture' capital so Summa can eat other Ohio hospital systems. Big market opening up around New Albany, maybe build some facilities down there.
dayofthedaleks··on Ask HN: Good book to learn modern networking?
This book is so great. The author _invented Spanning Tree_ and it's still a great foundational text along with Stevens' TCP/IP Illustrated vols 1&2.

Hardcopies of all 3 are dirt cheap and eternally valuable for the endpaper diagrams while inspecting packet captures alone.

dayofthedaleks··on IT employment grew by just 700 jobs in 2023
Ever read Vonnegut's _Player Piano_? Eventually there's just no real work to be done, unless you want to invent even more bullshit jobs for the FIRE sector.
dayofthedaleks··on IT employment grew by just 700 jobs in 2023
Every F500 company is Almost There on automating absolutely everything through ServiceNow and that's without AI being in the mix yet.

There's always going to be a place for coders who can massage the API links between packages or run an ERP, but you don't need IT when your firm is disposable line staff, institutional knowledge lives in the codebase, and HR has mostly been replaced by Workday.

dayofthedaleks··on Northern summer was hottest on record by a significant margin
Global methane emissions are estimated at 570 million tons annually.

Nordstream explosion is thought to have produced 155 thousand tons at the high end.

~.0004% bump.

dayofthedaleks··on Discovery of the historic Great Lakes schooner Trinidad
Taking a trip to Newcastle presumably.
dayofthedaleks··on This boat don't float (2009)
Worth pointing out Grimes and this fella were emulating/riding the coattails of the Miss Rockaway Armada who’d been doing their thing for a few years at that point [0].

dayofthedaleks··on How the Army tried and failed to build a bicycle corps (2020)
This is happening in Ukraine with motocross-style ebikes carrying 2-man teams with Javelin missiles.
dayofthedaleks··on The evolution of Steve Albini
Guy who once fronted a band called Rapeman finally grows up. Kind of inspiring really.

I don't think we'll be seeing this sort of turnaround from Jim Goad.

dayofthedaleks··on Wright's Book of Poultry (1911)
Your friend is doing good work. 'Fresh Air Poultry Houses' is one of my favorite instructional books on any topic.
dayofthedaleks··on US rejects Australia’s calls to end pursuit of WikiLeaks
If it's any consolation, I believe Five Eyes access puts a nation above any old NATO member in adjacency to US hegemony and will become even more of a geopolitical asset in coming decades.

But yeah any amount of reading about the CIA in Aus, especially 1975 stuff, makes the power relationship clear.

I believe that is "gut wrenching scream and fall into distance"

I associate it with the original doom but the second link shows prior use.

dayofthedaleks··on Chicago’s Railroad Problem
Author is right about one thing for sure: Nature's Metropolis is a hell of a book.
dayofthedaleks··on When did Alan Partridge first appear on television?
Saxondale is the better character/bit.
dayofthedaleks··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
I have interacted with more than a handful of job postings where the invitation to create a take-home deliverable was clearly a) an attempt at labor theft or b) a manager using the process to catch new buzzwords and troll for ideas to take to their team, which is still a form of labor theft.

At this point I view the practice as a signal the position wouldn't be a good fit for either party.

dayofthedaleks··on An auto CEO came close to saying the right thing about heavy EV batteries
I like that approach, because I know from experience eBikes and large-battery trailers are very useful for road trips.
dayofthedaleks··on An auto CEO came close to saying the right thing about heavy EV batteries
Swappable batteries are the solution to both vehicle weight and range/charging dwell time.

The missing piece is a standardized form factor - I hope the EU parliament or California legislature are working on something to nudge things in that direction.

dayofthedaleks··on The DOJ detected the SolarWinds hack 6 months earlier than first disclosed
They likely had a compliance box to check and a limited number of approved vendors.

For the use case of enterprise network monitoring and alerting, with integration of netflow and DB or application-level stats, there are very few effective competitors. HP OpenView probably exists in some hopelessly outdated form under a new name, but every other NMS seems to involve baking a lot of custom scripts or else is cloud-centric.

dayofthedaleks··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Adam Curtis is great, but his stuff is better described as commentary. He basically does James Burke's 'Connections' [0] as polemic. Can't get enough personally.

[0] Burke's 'Connections' and 'Day the Universe Changed' are definitely worthy of mention on this post.

dayofthedaleks··on From novice to master, and back again (2013)
Allow me to recommend Kim Stanley Robinson’s _Icehenge_.

dayofthedaleks··on VanMoof’s team of ‘bike hunters’ appears to succeed where the city doesn’t
I’m very pleased with my Boomerang - I haven’t tested the alarm function out of consideration for my neighbors but it’s got the battery life I found lacking in smaller trackers. I hope the next iteration has wireless charging or a more robust waterproof port cover.

From experience tracking down a different GPS module and stolen bike: If you tell the kids who answer the door your bike was lost and there’s a reward for whoever found it, things go more smoothly than getting the cops involved.

dayofthedaleks··on Battersea Power Station in London unveils the newly restored Control Room A
The photographer Will Pearson documented Control Room A several years ago with a 360 camera [0]. Click 'Launch Project' for panorama.

dayofthedaleks··on What did British officers think of the American civil war as it was happening?
In addition to conveying information well, this comment motivated me to find Foreman’s cited work. My library even has the audiobook!
