dawkins··on Why is Rust difficult?
> I'm a little bit tempted to make a simple compile-to-go language.

That's what I did for my current project. I love Go but for web apps is not the best in my opinion. I had some spare time and ended up building a VM that compiles typescript to bytecode. The performance loss is minimal, I still use the Go std library but it is a pleasure to use VS Code, generics (the VM ignores types but the TS compiler gives you static type safety, autocompletion, refactoring, etc...) Also exceptions is great for web apps where usually there is nothing else you can do but save all the info that you can and show an error to the user.

dawkins··on Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say
I know they are not the same as a patent troll but I find repulsive the idea of silencing and threatening this guy:

> I’ve written some code (100% my own) and implemented my own methods for matching music. There are some key differences with the algorithm Shazam uses. The code isn’t published yet, but I was planning on releasing it under Apache License to the open source community soon

Edit: of course if you are OK with software patents then it's perfectly logic. I am happy I don't live in a country where software patents exist.

I remember this patent threat http://royvanrijn.com/blog/2010/07/patent-infringement and lost any respect I had for them.

what language is written in? It looks like lisp, but exceptionally readable.
dawkins··on Spanish police raid .Cat domain name registry offices
That you can't even study in Spanish is only a little example about how reasonable is to talk about oppression.

The mayors who support the referendum are just being called to declare by the tribunals and being told that what they are supporting is illegal.

dawkins··on Spanish police raid .Cat domain name registry offices
To be fair the regional government is even more corrupt and do exactly the same thing. Even more and also play the victim card
dawkins··on Spanish police raid .Cat domain name registry offices
"Brutal repression of freedom of speech or demonstrations" "Spain's a stable republic" It's saddens me to see so much ignorance and nonsense. Keeping aside that Spain is a monarchy, in today's Catalonia people have to fight for basic things like the right to educate their children in Spanish, mayors who do not support the referendum are being harrased by the radicals... that is a little example of the "oppresion" you talk about. They have pushed the government to the limit and they have to do something.

Thanks
dawkins··on Ask HN: Resources for building a programming language?
Hi, for the parser and compiler this helped me a lot: https://compilers.iecc.com/crenshaw/

If you are building an interpreter too this was a great inspiration: http://luaforge.net/docman/83/98/ANoFrillsIntroToLua51VMInst...

dawkins··on HTTP throughput regression from Go 1.7.5 to 1.8
It's answered here: https://github.com/golang/go/issues/18964#issuecomment-27830...

Once a release candidate is issued, only documentation changes and changes to address critical bugs should be made. In general the bar for bug fixes at this point is even slightly higher than the bar for bug fixes in a minor release. We may prefer to issue a release with a known but very rare crash than to issue a release with a new but not production-tested fix.

dawkins··on Copy and paste-friendly Go crypto
yes, that is what I was looking for. Thank you!
dawkins··on Copy and paste-friendly Go crypto
I know! That's why I am asking. I have found surprisingly difficult to find a package that does this.
dawkins··on Copy and paste-friendly Go crypto
Sorry, of course I mean 32 byte.
dawkins··on Copy and paste-friendly Go crypto
But what if I want to encrypt "my secret" with "password1234"?. You can't require everybody to memorize exactly 32 bit passwords
dawkins··on Copy and paste-friendly Go crypto
In the encrypt examples I always wonder why they assume that you have a fixed 32 bit key (password). Shouldn't they include a padding function?

Is use this one:

edit: deleted in case some is so crazy to use it :)

dawkins··on My First 10 Minutes on a Server
I always worry that adding 2FA could make your machine inaccessible if anything happens to google-authenticator in this case. Maybe it's a little bit of paranoia but I don't like the idea of giving control over my ability to log into my server.

    info/exclude
you can put the files you don’t want git to deal with in your .gitignore file.
Since .gitignore is committed itself this is very useful.
dawkins··on Dragula: Drag and drop so simple it hurts
Very nice. Just lightweight js and it seems to work great.

I was going to download it and found:

If you're not using either package manager, you can use dragula by downloading the files in the dist folder. We strongly suggest using npm, though.

Why would they strongly suggest installing npm? (obviously I don't use node)

dawkins··on Project Rider – A C# IDE
People praise IntelliJ it a lot, but my experience with Android Studio and its slowness always reminds me that its writen in java.

I have been developing with Monodevelop the last 4 years when I switched to mono/ubuntu and I don't see here nothing that it doesn't have already: cross platform, excellent refactoring support, multiple targets. Maybe its because of my particular use case but I even prefer it to Visual Studio.

with a few css media query rules it would be usable. I always wonder the same.
