davkan··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
I’m sure I’m an outlier out here in the boonies but they are consistently slower than the other 3 carriers out here.
davkan··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
They have something I want. Usually that’s to check an account for a status update on a service or organization, or view a link that’s been sent to me.

I was fine with occasionally wading into the shit pile for something I want. It’s fine, the door is open and I don’t live there. Get in get out.

But now they want me have a shit address and shit suit and a shitmail. They want me to say hey its me mr shit can you let me in so can I have some of that delicious shit?

Instead I think I’ll just put on a hazmat suit and steal the few pieces I want from their shit pile and get out.

Boycotting them is pointless. Holding to your principals does nothing but hinder your own usage of the internet and does not help bring about the end of X or whoever else. The 0.5% of X users using xcancel disappearing overnight would have no impact.

These monoliths of Internet consolidation are not worth our consideration. Steal their content, block their ads, get on with your life.

davkan··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
Oh man I had forgotten about last measure. I remember multiple times scrambling for the power button.
davkan··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
You have to actually look not just get spoon fed by the algorithm. Community is how you find music. Subreddits, forums, record stores. You find reviewers with similar tastes and see what they like. You search “bands like X” on the Internet. You keep up with artists you like and watch for new albums. It’s more active than just letting the algorithm feed you stuff but it works. Also radio still exists and public radio especially is still great for discovery.

Or if you’re ripping your CDs and listening via apps you can just scrobble and get algo recommendations still while owning your music and without a monthly fee.

davkan··on Jellyfin 12.0
If you don’t want to commit to one of the vibecoded no community arr clones for books then i recommend shelfmark. Lightweight grabber, easy to start with, easy to rip out later.
davkan··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
I never bothered with nitter until elon made the site unusable for people not signed in. If he undid the changes and then sold the company I’d probably a bother to update the url the next time my nitter redirects stopped working.
davkan··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
It’s not that the content is not available on the Internet it’s that it’s a better experience. Indexed high quality content that can be retrieved automatically and at high speed without the need to seed or worry about copy strikes or deal with ever changing, poor quality streaming sites.
davkan··on .name Termination
Interesting. I do wonder how many people outside scammers and squatters buy them. I'd rather have an .xyz or .biz address personally.
davkan··on .name Termination
The point on hosting providers is well taken. You do have to consider x.pages.dev as the wild west not cloudflare of course. One difference though is you will never receive an email from x.pages.dev asking you to do something. The domain ownership still does play a part.
davkan··on .name Termination
Outside of the context of ccTLDs and city.state.gov etc, I struggle to think of examples 3LD+ domains where they are owned and operated by completely different concerns than the parent. If at some point you could just register your own mysite.state.gov domains willy nilly that's probably before my initial time online around 2000.

Another poster raised the point of hosting services which is valid. But at present outside of that example and the above I really can't think of an example where you have a link to entity.com and you have any significant cause to verify the identity beyond the 2LD.

davkan··on .name Termination
None of these examples are of actual separate registration/ownership of a 3LD from the parent 2LD. Cloudflare owns the domain for myproject.pages.dev and hosts all the relevant infra. Not to say that there isn't a different entity represented by the 3LD than the 2LD but it's not exactly the same.

Also I would not consider the examples of tumblr and reddit to be relevant. A person's blog on myprofile.tumblr.org is still the tumblr organization. This would be true for reddit even if they didn't redirect. Reddit admins moderate content on all subreddits.

davkan··on .name Termination
I can’t think of any prominent ones outside of country code domains.
davkan··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
You can wrench on the front brake at speed, you just can’t do it from the saddle. Gotta move your center of mass back and down.
davkan··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
I would bet that’s still top 5% for individual earners in the Bay Area. Do you think 300k is anywhere near average?
davkan··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
300k would put you in the top 5% of households and 3-4x the median household, let alone single earners. You are absolutely beyond “comfortably middle class” with that salary.
davkan··on Bookshelf – Self-hosted eBook library that runs on object storage
Yeah it’s definitely not the lightweight simple solution, its the everything under the sun solution.
davkan··on Bookshelf – Self-hosted eBook library that runs on object storage
No problem!
davkan··on Bookshelf – Self-hosted eBook library that runs on object storage
Calibre is a local single user software. There are tools like calibre-web that bring a calibre backend into a multiuser web application but even then you are not supposed to host the calibre database on network storage IIRC.

Grimmory is a web application first which is what I want. Access for my friends and, more importantly to me, an always online library with progress sync across all my reading devices.

Calibre still has some good use cases though like drm stripping and has a better workflow for heavy metadata editing, but my book sources generally come drm free and have good metadata.

davkan··on Bookshelf – Self-hosted eBook library that runs on object storage
Not to hijack but for non object storage use cases I’ve been using Grimmory[1] and like it. Opds, kobo api, kindle email and web reader cover pretty much every use case.

davkan··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
They just rebrand PSUs, not all of them are bomber. But they have 10yr warranties on PSUs and are good about honoring them. I wish they still sold gpus. I would only buy evga for every component if I could specifically for the painless warranty. Had to warranty an asus mobo and it was like pulling teeth.
davkan··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
My go to source for reviews was always jonnyguru.com but he closed up shop. Not sure who’s actually doing in-depth performance and component reviews these days.
davkan··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
My evga 1000w has been going strong for 11 years now. Cheaper power supplies fail often but if you buy quality and oversized they’ll outlast all your other components as they don’t become outdated.
davkan··on Stop Turning every purchase into a tip request
That was internally directed. Also the lowest is like 18% everywhere for counter service which I feel is generous. Ain’t like I’m making bay area money.
davkan··on Stop Turning every purchase into a tip request
Personally I make almost double the median wage in my HCOL small town. It’s hard to make it here, i know it. People are sleeping 3 to a studio. So it’s simple, I just choose not to be a miser and I hit yes on the lowest tip option for every purchase and never give it a second thought.
davkan··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
No. I will not discriminate between which ads I block when neither the site operators nor the ad networks discriminate on what they host. The moment i turn off my ad block I’m up to my eyeballs in lies and scams and garbage. No. Thanks.

This ad funded internet needs to die. It is rotten to the core and advertising is the source of almost all the evils of the modern web. As long as enough of the general public continues to not Adblock I’ll enjoy my free ride.

davkan··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
I only care or participate insofar as they affect my real offline life.
davkan··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
Unfortunately it’s hard to replace local groups for me. It’s mostly crap but there is very useful updates there as well and I live in a small enough community there’s no alternative. I’ve used them to get rides, forest fire info, community event info etc.

I used to use marketplace as well but they’ve completely ruined it with shipped products and ads and stuff from too far away. They’d rather show me pages upon pages of shit I’ll never buy because it’s shipped or three hours away than show me just the five results for “dresser” within 20 miles of me. So now i only interact with marketplace through buy/sell groups. God I miss Craigslist.

davkan··on Why Can't You Pack a Bag? (2024)
Recently I visited my parents and had to pack cycling gear, backpacking gear, wedding suit, on top of my daily clothes. I had two pairs of shoes in my luggage which alone takes up like a quarter of a carry-on. I filled a carry-on and a big checked luggage. For a week trip without significant activities it would just be a light carry-on.

Also small rolling luggage is fine if you’ve got status with the airline. If you board in group 2 you will never be forced to gate check your bag. Just make sure it fits in the smaller RJ overheads and you’re good to go.

davkan··on Why Can't You Pack a Bag? (2024)
Also washing and especially drying is what causes the most wear to your clothes, unless you are performing manual labor in them.
davkan··on Transmission has been forked as "ReTransmission"
deluge is probably the best for native gui. It doesnt have the amount of integrations as qb and it struggles with many thousands of torrents (or at least it did 10yrs ago), but otherwise a great client.

Otherwise there’s qui for qb which, while still a webui, is great.
