davkan··on Transmission has been forked as "ReTransmission"
deluge is probably the best for native gui. It doesnt have the amount of integrations as qb and it struggles with many thousands of torrents (or at least it did 10yrs ago), but otherwise a great client.

Otherwise there’s qui for qb which, while still a webui, is great.

davkan··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Only the elderly who are blind to the decline and can’t even picture a world order outside other than Pax Americana believe we will go back to business as usual. The rest of us realize it will take decades of stability to gain a semblance of the trust we used to be granted. And in the mean time the rest of the world will forge ties that don’t include us. We will be weakened on the world stage compared to status quo prior to trump for the rest of my life I’m sure.
davkan··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
Have you ever been in a union? A union shop is the only place I have ever experienced a true inversion of the power dynamic between myself and my boss even in small part and it is liberating. It was the only time my boss has ever had to bend to my will outside of their willingness to do so in order to retain me. The only power you have over your boss’s behavior outside of a union is in your willingness to become employed.

Tech workers historically have had it made in terms of compensation and work environment. Additionally good tech workers have historically had more leverage over their employer than an average worker. So it makes sense that many would be reticent to mess with a good thing. But here we are at the dawn of a new era. Nobody has any idea what tech employment will look like in ten or twenty years.

I would happily be in a union in tech. Maybe I wouldn’t if i was making 300k in the Bay Area but I am not.

davkan··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
I think the wrongful notion comes from the fact that the vast majority of Arch users use and speak about AUR as if it were a part of arch proper, only paying lip service to reviewing PKGBUILDS, etc. They wrap the default package manager in one that supports AUR and never touch it directly again. It feels closer to if all of GitHub was available in one click through the Microsoft store or windows update.

And unfortunately that’s how arch is mainly marketed by its users. “Arch has the latest everything, if it’s not in the repos it’s on AUR” is one of the standard selling points.

Of course that speaks to how people use linux insecurely not how Linux is insecure.

davkan··on Getting 25 Gbps Thunderbolt Ethernet on My Mac Studio
I used to have a thunderbolt ring network for a ceph backend on my k8s cluster. On Linux load the thunderbolt_net kernel module and they show up the same as any other Ethernet interfaces. Just directly connect them and configure the network settings on each end using your normal tools.

Latency was an order of magnitude higher than twisted pair but the throughput was greater than 10Gbps and I didn’t have to spend on 10GbE capable servers and network equipment. I vaguely remember that they had to be proper Thunderbolt not just USB-C but that could have changed it’s been quite a while.

Well our inmates have washbasins in their bedrooms and we have more inmates than some European countries have citizens.
davkan··on Our position on open-weights models
Fox News et al repeat that their populace chants death to America in the streets, as a means to justify the war to their viewership. It’s not a stretch to assume that a small number of consumers of that media would take that message to heart. Of course I don’t have to make such an assumption, I’ve met them.
davkan··on Our position on open-weights models
Many of my conservative acquaintances find the death of those kids to be regrettable in the way you come back to find your car over the line regret your parking job. Certainly they do not feel the tragedy nor any responsibility.

The some few i mentioned who see it as a positive are the ones who say nuke Iran, the only good Iranian is a dead Iranian etc. They might not come out and say I’m glad those schoolchildren are dead because they’ll know they’ll get pilloried. But make no mistake in what they believe.

davkan··on Our position on open-weights models
You give too much credit. Many think of it as an acceptable cost of waging war, not something to waste regret on. Some few think of it as a positive (they chant death to America over there).
davkan··on Plasma Tunnels Reveal How Dying Satellites Fall to Earth
Well it’s definitely junk or waste or garbage from the moment you are unable to use it or reclaim it. It so happens in the case of starlink satellites that we don’t have to burn that trash, it burns itself. If you want to say space junk is just the stuff stuck up there that’s fine, but there’s a short period of time where Starlink satellites are both in space and are junk.
davkan··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
Most won’t fix bugs in non-competitive games are things that don’t prevent players from engaging the intended gameplay loop and are unlikely to be encountered randomly. Who cares if you can endlessly pickpocket that one npc in oblivion. No one but the people who want to exploit will ever be affected and why stop them if that’s what they want.

In competitive games unintended mechanics are much more frequently patched but there are plenty of examples that are straight up iconic. Wave dashing in melee, magnum damage in Halo CE, sword cancelling in halo 2, b-hopping and surfing in CS.

And when you get to games like mmos where saving time is of major value glitches are like gifts. I am still mad they patched out logout skips in classic wow.

davkan··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
Fair enough, 55k would’ve seemed pretty low to me in the NE for a fresh dev. Not 75k though.
davkan··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
Yeah that would make more sense. Though it seems to me AI is currently better at reducing dev headcount than most other roles.
davkan··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I went to look up how to disable shipped results in facebook marketplace and non Reddit results were all multi page articles. Even if bots are marketing on Reddit at least it’s in short form and without a deluge of ads.
davkan··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
Those salaries seem low for mid sized cities even no?
davkan··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
AI slop projects, or vibecoded projects, or projects made with heavy llm assistance, or whatever you want to call them are already divisive and the discussions about whether they aught be allowed are already causing strife in many communities.

Right or wrong many users are utterly uninterested in said content and wish that their existing communities could continue as they did prior to the onslaught. Naturally, some communities will decide to attempt to moderate in such a way that supports those users desires. As with most necessary moderation of online communities there will be gray areas and judgement calls and drama and abuse. There really isn’t an alternative.

davkan··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
The rest of the internet is so enshittified by SEO garbage that searching for a problem you’re having and appending reddit is the only way to get a quick answer without scrolling for 5 pages down an article.
davkan··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
Manufacturing plants bring jobs. What benefits do datacenters bring to their communities?
davkan··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
They could have been category defining, sure. It would still be a fall though is my point. A fall from being a household name across the entire world to a company making components and niche hobbyist and professional equipment.
davkan··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
The future was the death of Kodak as it existed regardless. They were a chemical manufacturing company that did some software. Their core business was doomed regardless. Could they have pivoted? Yes. But even if you correct every missed shot they’d still be a shell of their former selves unless you’re creating wild counterfactuals like a kodaphone.
davkan··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Kodak was definitely mismanaged in many ways but you are correct in your analysis. If they had pivoted hard to digital they could have been what today? Nikon? Fujifilm? These are known brands that are bigger than Kodak is today but they are nothing compared to what Kodak was.

At its peak Kodak was one of the (the?) most well known brands on the entire planet. Anywhere in the world if someone snapped a photo Kodak was more than likely taking a cut, coming and going. They employed as many people in Rochester alone as any digital camera company does today internationally.

Sure it could have been managed better but they were always doomed for a fall. They were a chemical company entering a digital age. Does anybody even care who makes the sensors in iPhones?

davkan··on Moonshine: Lets you stream games from your PC to any device running Moonlight
Tricky and 3 were both great fun. The latter “SSX” was decent but was missing the more arcadey fun of the earlier ones. I tried Steep and it did not hit the spot that hitting uber combos in SSX did.
davkan··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
How are you managing updates?

I absolutely loved vyos but after their repeated hostility towards non paying users I moved to mikrotik for my routers (already had mikrotik switches).

First they stopped publishing LTS images, telling users to build from source. So people built gh repos you could clone and build with actions. Then they stopped making lts builds reproducible and told free users to use the preview release. But the preview release doesn’t get security updates. So if there’s a vulnerability you’re SOL until the next release which could be months. Not really tenable for an edge device for me and I’m not very interested in being a user of a product that does not want me.

davkan··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
It always worked fine with wine for me.
davkan··on Irish datacenters now guzzle 23% of the country's electricity
Yes but the death toll was in large part because of Britain forcing the Irish to export everything that wasn’t a potato among a myriad of other oppressive practices.
davkan··on How to read more books
Personally I am incapable of maintaining concentration on an audiobook while doing even mundane chores. I can only listen to audiobooks on longer drives or road run/bike rides. So I stick with podcasts around the house where attention lapsing for a minute less likely to cause you to lose the whole thread.
davkan··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
I watch plenty of videos but it doesn’t coincide with my reading of HN.
davkan··on Ben Bernanke Joins Anthropic Oversight Trust
That remains to be seen.

I for one am doubtful that AI as a whole has meaningfully improved the lives of just about anyone besides the few who have gotten rich. Meanwhile many have already lost their jobs as a result, even if AI is just a convenient scapegoat.

davkan··on Dua Lipa opens library for banned and censored books in Portugal
Neither of your examples would be considered murder by those doing them. In the case of slavery you can’t murder property.

A murder is specifically an unjustified killing. And as far as I am aware it is universally considered bad. Which makes sense because murder being considered bad is pretty much baked into the definition.

I can’t think of a modern society that does not condemn going into a random person’s house and killing them. Nor any past ones for that matter.

Now in some backwards ass country they might not consider it murder if that random person was homosexual. Or a killing might be justified in the context of a revolution. Or to bring rain. Or when shooting some guy fleeing with your tv in the back.

davkan··on Knowledge Should Not Be Gated
Well they abused fair use and pretended llm learning was the same as human learning. Enough gray area to risk court. A lot less gray area when there are signed contracts involved saying they won’t I think.
