davinic··on I've screwed up plenty of things too
Luckily I learned from a young age. When I was 7 or 8 I was using the computer my dad used to run his company. It had dual 3.5" floppy drives, and a new (to me) hard drive. Needing to format a floppy, I opened the format utility and for some reason I thought I should chose "hard disk" (because it wasn't floppy?!? hmm) when prompted.

So I format the "hard disk" and for some reason my 3.5" wasn't formatted. So I tried again and again to no avail and gave up.

The production manager came in to work Monday morning to a fresh hard drive. Some things were backed up and some things had to be recreated.

The outcome of this necessitated learning a new skill: bypassing passwords.

davinic··on Let ICANN know if you support .com price hikes
Since domain names are finite, like real estate, why not charge based on demand? In this scenario, in-demand domain names (mostly based on length) would have higher renewal fees than undesirable ones. Perhaps add an order of magnitude in pricing for each character under 7?

  >=7 - $10
  6 - $100
  5 - $1000
  4 - $10,000
  <=3 - $100,000
davinic··on Let ICANN know if you support .com price hikes
You are correct, but our entire economy is setup to reward the exact land hoarding that against which you are arguing. OP is asking why domain name ownership would be treated differently.
davinic··on Mysterious startup Shadow under scrutiny after Iowa caucus meltdown
Sure, but many did, and many because they were in rooms with large numbers of people and they were depending on wifi and cell service, which often fails in those situations. Then throw in different phones, OSs, versions, etc. Word is that this app was rolled out with no user training.
davinic··on Mysterious startup Shadow under scrutiny after Iowa caucus meltdown
There are apps and libraries that can simulate load.
davinic··on Mysterious startup Shadow under scrutiny after Iowa caucus meltdown
Mysterious startup? Seems identical to almost every small dev shop I've ever seen, complete with bizdev people who over-promise and clients who might not know better. My understanding is that they started development just 2 months ago and never bothered to train users. That's all I need to know.
davinic··on McKinsey, technocratic management, and structural inequality
But what's important is what that redistributed money is doing. It would flowing into local economies and getting spent many times over (until it gets back to the top and repeats the process). It would not be sitting in safe investments. It would not be wreaking havoc on the housing markets. It would not be funding the WeWorks of the world. It would be driving demand from the ground up.
davinic··on McKinsey, technocratic management, and structural inequality
The data[0] show that there is an inverse correlation between performance and CEO compensation, so I'm not sure how you come to "that is what the job is worth". Let's not pretend that the CEO market is some idealistic pure marketplace. In reality it's a good ole boys club between boards and top execs. I would wager that limiting CEO pay would have no negative effect on the supply of candidates.
davinic··on McKinsey, technocratic management, and structural inequality
You're cherry picking. What is the number if you redistribute all CEO pay over 100x the average employee for the Fortune 1000?
davinic··on Some Google Photos videos in backups were sent to strangers in November
Only because you're thinking as "self-hosting" to be setting up a server, etc. Before cloud-connected security cameras, every cam system owner was "self-hosting", even if that mean the cameras just recording to a local box.
davinic··on Georgia election server showed signs of tampering, expert says
Not to mention the negative impact on parallelization! Hundreds of paper ballot station can easily be setup in a room, but setting up an additional voting machine requires a ton of other things (budgets, purchasing, techs, etc).
davinic··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
Think of it as first class seats giving the optionality to board at any time (not to mention those free drinks and snacks).
davinic··on Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
I've wondered if Sony's music ownership interests played a large role in losing that market due to their fear of piracy.
davinic··on How an Alzheimer’s ‘cabal’ thwarted progress toward a cure
I would say that this is an example of the planning fallacy.
davinic··on College-educated workers are taking over the American factory floor
I think that any minimum wage law should take into account the requirement of a college degree. If minimum wage were $15 nationally, then require at least a $20/hr or $25/hr minimum if the job posting requires a bachelor's degree -- not if the person has the degree, only if the employer requires it.
davinic··on What happens when you add a new teller? (2008)
Why gender the showers in the first place? Seems like added complication for little to no benefit by splitting into separate queues.
davinic··on Life expectancy in the U.S. is declining for middle-aged people of all groups
And for a reference, we spent around $30 billion in the US in 2016 for healthcare marketing and advertising.

davinic··on Life expectancy in the U.S. is declining for middle-aged people of all groups
US healthcare spending represents $3.4 trillion[0]. $6.3 billion is only 0.18% of the total costs.

Not to mention that malpractice claims paid has decreased substantially (55.7%) in the last 2 decades [1].

davinic··on The Real Class War
It's not about which specific categories of work are valuable, it's about treating labor in general as more valuable than capital. Currently in the US, income from capital is taxed at far lower rates than income from labor. Why?
davinic··on Young people in U.S. dying at high rates
I think this is a result of looking at the mean vs. the median. While the average GDP continues to rise, the median remains stagnant -- only up 2.8% since 1999[0]!

The saying "never cross a river that is 4 feet deep on average" is applicable -- the skewness is a critical factor.

davinic··on I was an astrologer
Not to mention that since the placebo effect is so real, it can be unethical to explain that to someone. When my mother was going through chemo and radiation and started buying healing crystals as well, I supported her beliefs in that (she was also doing all the doc recommended stuff).
davinic··on I was an astrologer
To me NLP always felt more like mysticism than science.

davinic··on Zuckerberg doubles down on Facebook political ads policy after Twitter ban
I think this could be solved by disallowing targeted political ads at any micro level. Allow campaigns to target metro areas and very broad demo groups much like TV does.
davinic··on Zuckerberg doubles down on Facebook political ads policy after Twitter ban
You're presenting a false dichotomy.

Another solution would be to allow the ads but disallow personalized targeting.

davinic··on The most successful people are just the luckiest, a new computer model confirms
Of course not, but you still have to either be born as the type of person who would seek out and hone this skill, or have been born into a situation where someone showed you this and you were naturally receptive to it.
