davidrudder··on Show HN: My Weekend Project ApplicantChatter
Thanks for the support!

I recently switched themes and that background didn't match well. I also found a similar problem with the captcha on signup, which I fixed. Thanks for reporting that!

davidrudder··on Announcing Google Reader Alerts
I'm pretty sure this is a joke. But, I used to really do this.

I used to run Reliable Response who made Notification. It was basically an enterprise PagerDuty. Enterprise when SaaS was taking off...thus why I used to run Reliable Response. But, seriously, it supports an RSS feed of your recent alerts.

Not a lot of detail there, but it's better than nothing.

We had some emails delivered yet. While the drama was fun to watch, I'm a little annoyed with the kiddies who decided a DDOS was a good idea.
davidrudder··on The Professor, the Bikini Model and the Suitcase Full of Trouble
Oh, yeah, she's definitely a case of "plastic surgeons gone wild". I said she was famous, not attractive! :)
davidrudder··on The Professor, the Bikini Model and the Suitcase Full of Trouble
Did anyone else find it unbelievable that he thought he was really talking to Denise Milani? She's kind of famous.
davidrudder··on Why I'm Mad at Apple
I'm not clear on what liability Apple would have for allowing a minor to develop for their platform. Heck, how old were the Steves when they created the platform?
davidrudder··on How to build a $5 Arduino clone
Arduino is a great platform for prototyping on, but it's kind of expensive and bulky for a finished product. At least my $30 uno is. Being able to make a stand-alone is great! I can prototype on my arduino, then use it to burn the code onto a bare chip.

I found this article easier to read than the one on Arduino's wiki. It's basically the same information, but with better explanations and pictures.

davidrudder··on Throw Out Your Resume
I'm a hiring manager at a small company with a tech focus (we have a non-tech product, but we sell that product on the web and have a lot of tech behind it). I agree with most of this, with some big caveats.

"If you’re not different then you’re boring." That's not true at all. If you send us a poster, a video or (god forbid) a song you wrote, we'll wonder if you can get along in a work environment. This isn't summer camp, it's a job. We want to know if you can do the work.

"dress accordingly to the company’s culture" - no, no, no. Dress like you want the job. When you work here, you can dress however you want. Most people wear jeans and t-shirts. But showing up to an interview like that looks like you don't really want the position. Put a tie on. Even better, wear a suit.

"If you can’t be genuine, real and comfortable in the conversation then forget it." If you can't be comfortable in an interview, then you're human. We recognize the inherent stress in an interview. Don't worry about appearing aloof. We'd rather you be anxious to get the job.

davidrudder··on Show HN: a web-based xkcd-style comix editor
This is awesome! Okay,I agree with others that say that photoshop is easier, and that most people (ahem, like yours truly) would make crappy comics. But...c'mon...an xkcd editor?!?!?1!! hecka cool
davidrudder··on How A Pull Request Rocked My World
I like it when developers praise each other.
davidrudder··on Adafruit CEO Limor Fried named Entrepreneur magazine Entrepreneur of 2012
The DIY electronics movement is entering an incredible phase, similar to what happened to the Internet during the post-boom decade. Companies like Amazon, Google, Twilio, WordPress and others made it easy for non-techies to build awesome applications. Now projects like Arduino, Electric Imp, Little Bits, and Raspberry Pi are doing the same for electronics. You can make a great project without needing to be an electrical engineer. The Internet gave the masses the power of communication and information. DIY electronics are giving the masses the power to build the world around them. Adafruit (and sparkfun!) are bringing that incredible tech to the world.
