daviddever23box··on No safe efficient ways to do three-way string comparisons in Go
201 instances != widely used by multiple projects. Thank you for playing.

There are many ways to approach this type of problem, and–while I understand that some may want to lean on this approach, based on their experiences with another language–this is an academic comparison, and far less useful than one might believe when building performant code.

To each their own.

daviddever23box··on No safe efficient ways to do three-way string comparisons in Go
The premise that three-way string comparisons are widely used is spurious at best.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Devs with ADHD do you use specialized tooling?
In general, there will be certain times of the day when one gets their best deep work done; there will be other times when the distractions dominate. Team communication should be predicated on the ability to ask questions / get answers asynchronously, without penalties for delayed responses, and with reasonable degrees of detail.
daviddever23box··on My next Mac might be the last
Sitting on top of old macOS releases != reasonable security posture.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Devs with ADHD do you use specialized tooling?
Better use of async communications with your co-workers helps significantly.
daviddever23box··on “Python isn't Used in Prod”
Python for orchestration? Count me in, though for end-user facing application binaries on desktop or mobile, it's a bit of a climb.
daviddever23box··on I Can't Go Anymore
By removing the arbitrary preferences from code formatting, one can focus on the substance of the code itself, and not its accidental decoration; in the case of generated code, for example, this can be quite beneficial.
daviddever23box··on I Can't Go Anymore
Golang provides automatic formatting via go fmt: that would take care of bracket-else alignment in one operation.

Never mistake a badly-designed plane for pilot inexperience.

daviddever23box··on Companies that hire “Engineers who can design” or “Designers who can code”
Many small companies have roles such as this, especially in the embedded electronics space.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Options for Android phone no longer getting security updates?
Keep it, to play around with LineageOS, but get an inexpensive iPhone.

#u€k these handset manufacturers like Moto whose lack of mainline support feeds our trash heaps - they know exactly what they're doing.

daviddever23box··on How did you find your technical co-founder?
Simple question: what's in it for them? What can you uniquely offer to them, other than promises of a brighter future?
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
There are many poorly-researched questions on Stack Overflow, though this tends to be generational (and not exclusive to StOflow).
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
1. Learn to deal with criticism. 2. Ask yourself if your architectural pattern is, in fact, the right one; once confirmed, ignore the haters. Or embrace them. 3. See 2 above. 4. See if Y does solve your problem while meeting your overall criteria. If it does, ask yourself if you are bound to X.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: What Happened to YC?
Why? Not all startups are able to thrive....
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
The workout ideas are quite good.

That said-just focus on the things that you are good at. Not caring about a task is a good sign that it could be automated out of your life altogether.

daviddever23box··on Golang – Pull all the structs out???
It might be worth hiring an experienced Go developer, even as an independent contractor, to review your codebase as well as to help you lint your code.
daviddever23box··on Gab Founder Andrew Torba Wants to Build a Christian Nationalist Internet
Too much of an intellectual laxative leaves one feeling tired and empty.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: Has the Apple Silicon excessive disk read/write issue been fixed?
Yes. Seems that power cycles also affect these numbers.
daviddever23box··on Apple Car: Bad Idea After All
This may have already been said, but QNX is the underlying OS for CarPlay, and not iOS / macOS / *os. It has a pretty strong track record for realtime capabilities.
daviddever23box··on Mozilla claims Apple, Google and Microsoft force users to use default browsers
...and so did Mozilla, when FirefoxOS was a thing. Gecko is still the default engine for KaiOS.

Are we in browser-whining season again? (Typing this from Firefox on macOS.)

daviddever23box··on It's time to halt starting any new projects in C/C++
https://github.com/microsoft/windows-rs

They're a founding member - no idea as to the amount of financial support that Microsoft provides to the Rust Foundation....

daviddever23box··on I accidentally started a movement – Policing the Police by scraping court data
Public airwaves FTW.
daviddever23box··on Poll: What did you name the parent dir where you keep code?
$HOME/src/{domain}/{org}/{repo}, which was stolen from the hierarchical organization of Golang bin / pkg / src, albeit one level closer to $HOME than $HOME/go/src.

For a developer named foo with a GitHub account, a repo named bar would, for example, be found at $HOME/src/github.com/foo/bar.

daviddever23box··on “Secrets” about the consumer audio business you may find interesting
Are any of these observations "secrets", or simply naive observations that have come home to roost?

(Disclaimer: I spent two decades in the hi-fi industry, from tech to sales mgr to product consultant, and I currently work in consumer electronics technology on the software side.)

daviddever23box··on Vendor by Default (2021)
As an aside, it is still possible to vendor dependencies in Golang by using go mod vendor, as described here: https://go.dev/ref/mod#go-mod-vendor
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
Don't go back for grad school if you think it will enhance your earning power / job prospects. The best use of your time is to leverage university resources to satisfy your own ends (inexpensive software, liberal OSS licensing, etc.)
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: How did you start higher education after 40?
The ability to conceptualize and abstract a problem into its component parts is a key skill that will never underserve you.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: As a Windows developer and user, can anyone recommend a Mac for testing?
Item 2 would definitely be relevant if one was testing Bluetooth device compatibility or multi-display functionality; for general software testing with a wired keyboard and mouse via HDMI and wired Ethernet (a testing scenario that minimizes any latency), it's not so much of an issue.

I agree with the M1 Mac mini 8/256 recommendation, though it represents a plateau of performance that many of the remaining (and many) Intel macOS devices cannot reach. The M1 is faster, therefore perhaps not as representative of currently-supported legacy macOS-on-Intel devices.

daviddever23box··on Ask HN: As a Windows developer and user, can anyone recommend a Mac for testing?
8 GB on an M1 or M2 is not the same as 8 GB on an Intel-based device; the memory bandwidth is significantly higher. A 2x factor (Apple Silicon 8/16 GB vs Intel 16/32) seems about right.
daviddever23box··on Ask HN: As a Windows developer and user, can anyone recommend a Mac for testing?
Grab yourself a Mac mini Core i5-8500B (Late 2018): https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-c...

It's an hexa-core 8th-generation Intel Coffee Lake processor with 65W TDP, has USB-C / Thunderbolt 3, as well as upgradeable DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM memory modules. It's also one of the last Macs to support dual-boot via Boot Camp, which will provide you a nice sanity check if you need to go deeper into performance profiling (i.e., Windows 10 vs latest macOS).

Also - make sure you have an Apple Developer account, as you will want to be able to appropriately package the application, including signing.

This machine will last a while.
