davidczech··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
The heaviest models run on Nvidia
davidczech··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
There should be some browser-level enforcement of this. For example, it would seem possible to detect a user frustratingly mashing the back button, and offer a remediation dialog to disable any hackery that's hijacking the back buttons.
davidczech··on Apple at 50
Paul McCartney played inside the ring yesterday.
davidczech··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
It would seem like a naive solution would be some arrangement where Discord would ask for a proof-of-age from an official service ran by the State (which issues your ID)
davidczech··on Fix HDMI-CEC weirdness with a Raspberry Pi and a $7 cable
A side note: I am very sad that HDMI-CEC apparently can only support like 3 "console-like" devices. I have an Apple TV, Nintendo Switch 2, Sound Bar (eARC) and PS5 hooked up, but only 3 can really interact with CEC.

It took me a long time to diagnose why it seemingly wouldn't work with my Nintendo Switch 2.

I ended up disabling it on my PS5 because I never use the darn thing, but it kind of stinks since most TV's have 4 HDMI inputs.

davidczech··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
The key that is punched into the input field is based on where your finger lifted up. So if you have slide-to-type on, the pop-up paddle that showed up on key-down won't change to where your finger slid to for key-up. That's why when typing fast with slide-to-type on you can get confusing UI hints like this.

It kind of seems like the grace period for the paddle hiding with slide-to-type needs adjustment. I just leave slide-to-type off.

davidczech··on Cryptographic Issues in Cloudflare's Circl FourQ Implementation (CVE-2025-8556)
AI generated bounty report spam is a huge problem now.
davidczech··on Apple: SSH and FileVault
They are encrypted with a SEP key when stored in preboot volume.
davidczech··on This map is not upside down
I'd bet a lot of this behavior is heavily correlated with how we generally read top to bottom, which is in itself, probably an arbitrary decision made by ancient text writers.
davidczech··on Major rule about cooking meat turns out to be wrong
FWIW I agree with you, I don't like pre-sliced steak served to me. I can slice it myself.
davidczech··on Google's shortened goo.gl links will stop working next month
I don't really get it, it must cost peanuts to leave a static map like this up for the rest of Google's existence as a company.
davidczech··on Major rule about cooking meat turns out to be wrong
Big steak fan here.

Many times I've ordered a large cut of meat, like a porter house or a tomahawk (usually intended to be shared with the table), they have came pre sliced. I'm pretty sure even Peter Luger's will pre slice it for you even for an individual.

davidczech··on Launch HN: Tinfoil (YC X25): Verifiable Privacy for Cloud AI
Private Cloud Compute has been in use since iOS 18 released.
davidczech··on Launch HN: Tinfoil (YC X25): Verifiable Privacy for Cloud AI
Even if you had open hardware, how would you even know a chip you have sitting in front of you was fabricated correctly?
davidczech··on Starcloud
Data center on Mars.

I will call it MartianCloud.

davidczech··on New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer
For what it's worth, I have exclusively used Waymo in SF ever since my last Uber driver was smoking weed while driving. I just don't want to deal with the human variable anymore.
davidczech··on I quit my FAANG job because it'll be automated by the end of the year (2025)
It's the new self-driving, but for programmers.
davidczech··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Yes, it hasn't been long enough for any real effects to start being felt, even though it's felt like an eternity.
davidczech··on Show HN: I got laid off from Meta and created a minor hit on Steam
The main menu is awesome
davidczech··on MySQL at Uber
They used to produce some neat stuff. Jaeger and Cadence were quite cool.
davidczech··on The GPU, not the TPM, is the root of hardware DRM
TPM can measure the Secure Boot state for later reporting (attestation) but when it comes to DRM, that’s not a terribly interesting bit of information, knowing the firmware and kernel are valid, when the configuration of the OS and installed applications is really the important part.

As far as I know there’s no real scalable way for that to work in the Windows ecosystem.

davidczech··on Intel announces retirement of Pat Gelsinger
Don't forget Bob Swan
davidczech··on Valve developers discuss why Half Life 2: Episode 3 was abandoned
I think Half Life: Alyx really is their "Half Life 3" - there's no game I've played that comes close to anything like it. It's fairly clear in hindsight they opted for a prequel to disassociate with the baggage HL3 carries, in all aspects.
davidczech··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
This sort of absolutism is the same kind of garbage middle-school level philosophy that Elon Musk peddles, and it doesn't work in practice. For example, holocaust denialism, or in the most recent example, Sandy Hook massacre denialism isn't an opposing viewpoint worth hosting on a private platform. The best course of action is to simply eradicate it. Infowars being shutdown is a great example of a good thing happening.
davidczech··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I don't think we should, nor do I think it's healthy. Some viewpoints are horrific and should absolutely be suppressed.
davidczech··on Multiple new macOS sandbox escape vulnerabilities
SetWindowsHookEx is a blast.
davidczech··on M4 MacBook Pro
The first release set should be downloadable now for inspection. (It's binaries only, source is released for select components)
davidczech··on M4 MacBook Pro
That could be said of any device you own, ever.
davidczech··on M4 MacBook Pro
I think it’s usually filmed on weekends
davidczech··on How I write code using Cursor
I've had similar experiences. I've basically disengaged any form of AI code generation. I do find it useful to pointing me to interesting/relevant symbols and API's however, but it doesn't save me any time connecting plumbing, nor is that really a difficult thing for any programmer to do.
