davidcollantes··on Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas
I love the canvases, and truly would like to have a bit more inside on the process this specific author used to reach the results shown. I have read Surya's "Training AI to Paint with Code" but, what's Alice's technique?
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
That’s an old screenshot, which should be redone. We switched to :, so, it is now nick:example.com.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
You can link servers (Libera, for example, has many), but they are not federated, nor decentralised (services are used for registration, etc.).
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
The idea (what's encouraged) is that's so simple you can run it yourself. If you email me (email on profile), I can create an account for you on mine.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
I am not the owner of the project, I just use it. Federated rooms have no owners, there will be no collisions (they would simply merge). Nicks are tied to their own servers, and hence unique and will not collide.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Sorry, I am sure it is the HN effect.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Bans are per server (for what I have seeing). Federated rooms continue to exist if a server drops off, as no server "owns" them.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
That is always a concern, yes. You can block users, and entire instances, that spam.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
If you (top and child commentator) want to try without running your own, please send me an email: david dot collantes at gmail dot com.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Yes, you will need to know someone running an instance to create an account for you.
davidcollantes··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Parley is a chat network with no centre.

Every person (or team) runs a small instance for their own domain. Instances find each other through DNS and well-known identity documents, exchange signed messages over HTTPS, and present the whole federated network to ordinary IRC clients such as Lurker, Mango, mIRC, WeeChat, Textual, etc., without the need of any plugins.

davidcollantes··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
Our family uses credit cards for everything. We don’t pay fees, the merchants do. We get the benefit of being able to settle disputes easily, getting cash backs, having extra insurance on certain goods, and not having to carry any easy-to-lose cash. We don’t spend more than we can afford, and we pay in full at the end of the billing cycle.
davidcollantes··on Show HN: textlog – A quiet, text-only microblogging platform, open-source, no JS
Do you know where is their repository?
davidcollantes··on Show HN: I made a private self-destructing image hosting site in Golang
How do we know it is Golang? Is there a repository with the code available? Without it I find "in Golang" rather superfluous; it should have better been "I made a private self-destructing image hosting site".
davidcollantes··on A Trip to 90s Kansai: Exploring the XD FirstClass Network BBS
I ran a FirstClass BBS server in 1992, fully connected to other FC hobbyists. I remember that mail transfers happened at a scheduled time, and mine used to fail because my father was a Ham radio and, when he used his transceiver, the radio signals would drop the modem connection.
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Eyeball
I was 0.06% off on eyeball. Beat me: https://eyeball.rory.codes.

This is fun!

davidcollantes··on How Shamir's Secret Sharing Works
I have noticed that not one of them is compatible with the other. I generated shares using `ssss` (https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man1/ssss-split....), and couldn't combine them on any of the three sites linked. That is a downside, isn't it? Do you know of a way to bypass that hurdle, other than packing resources together with the shares?
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Git-based front-end interface for Hugo
Not to nickpick, but it seems GitHub centric. Is there a way it could be used simply with git (running on a VPS, on the user space, that is, accessed via SSH)?
davidcollantes··on Show HN: ShadowCat – file transfer through QR Codes in a Browser
Is there a client that needs to be used to be able to receive files this way? I tried the dedicated QR reader on my iPhone, and the Camera app, and couldn’t get it to assemble the chunks. It will show the encodings one after the other, but nothing else.
davidcollantes··on Cisco workforce reductions
> Today we announced our Q3 FY26 earnings with record revenue of $15.8 billion, up 12 percent year over year, and double-digit top and bottom-line growth. The ELT and I could not be prouder of the growth you have all delivered for Cisco.

Great! A successful company, right? Ah, but then:

> we are making changes today that will result in the reduction of our overall workforce in Q4 by fewer than 4,000 jobs, representing less than 5 percent of our total employee base.

I wouldn't have put those two together so close, nor in the same announcement.

davidcollantes··on Taphouse – A Native macOS GUI for Homebrew
Thank you! I searched various permutations and failed. It’s a telling about the sad state of search engines.
davidcollantes··on Taphouse – A Native macOS GUI for Homebrew
What is that (Apptide)? Have a link?
davidcollantes··on Write some software, give it away for free
> Debian-based Linux (Raspberry Pi OS, KDE Neon, Pop_OS, etc. - not Ubuntu)

Why not Ubuntu?

davidcollantes··on Show HN: Bhatti – Self-hostable Firecracker orchestrator with auto pause/wake
Bhatti is easy to use, so powerful, and handy! Thank you for being so fast at fixing issues, and keeping up with bhatti’s development.
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Rip.so – a graveyard for dead internet things
Where would Prodigy, CompuServ, eWorld, MSN, and the like would fit in? Together with AOL?
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Atomic – Local-first, AI-augmented personal knowledge base
What's the other one? I cannot find it.
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Smol machines – subsecond coldstart, portable virtual machines
Wow, that’s quite nice! I see that’s at VM time, any plans to add the ability to add them after the fact? I am really enjoying bhatti!
davidcollantes··on Show HN: Smol machines – subsecond coldstart, portable virtual machines
Is there a way to store configuration/data of applications running on a Bhatti VM on the host, ala Docker volumes?
