david_frier··on 7-zip 22.00 – APFS, Posix TAR, high precision timestamps
Given that not EVERYBODY does EVERYTHING on Linux in the CLI, can anyone recommend a GUI archive handler like engrampa, but that is not bound to p7zip and will instead use 7zz?
david_frier··on Charm – Tools to make the command line glamorous
This appealed to me, too. Maybe the demo they are going for is, old.
david_frier··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
That looks like nothing so much as Season 1 of The Good Place.
david_frier··on Ask HN: Higher IQ? What are your hacks for assimilating?
Humility is a great start!

Humor, also. Amuse others with your wit. Don't be insulting, it's not necessary

Be willing to have your opinion discounted for a while (see, humility). When you turn out to have been right often enough they will come around. If it doesn't work out that way, hmmm, maybe you lacked some necessary knowledge.

Actual knowledge can often trump an ability to figure it out quickly. Pay attention to people with experience in a new situation, even if their CPU clock is running slower than yours. Respect their database.

david_frier··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of the interesting things you find on HN?
I don't, very much. Mostly I read, and move on.

Once in a while, I find something longer which I really want to read later. I save those to InstaPaper.

david_frier··on Russian bots rigged Voice Kids TV talent show result
FTA: Channel One said the voting scam on 26 April "must be the first and last time that anyone tries to control the audience's choice".

Yeah. Right.

david_frier··on Phones Should Be Like Toothbrushes
I get the point, but "like a toothbrush" is a stretch. Dentists think none of us spends enough time with the toothbrush.
david_frier··on [dead]
that may be the longest tautology I've ever read.
david_frier··on The Orange Book or Old School Security
How a deprecated 35-yo NSA document has guided this security pro's career
david_frier··on Ask HN: What personal blogs do you read?
kottke.org - I know it's big and popular but it's still got a very personal feel.

nancylebov.livejournal.com - Input Junkie She is the Button Lady you may know for many years now. Very eclectic subject matter

vihart.com for the math and the attitude.

david_frier··on Amazon to Disable S3 Path-Style Access Used to Bypass Censorship
It's unclear to me why would we expect corporations that are designed to seek only profit to care about issues that are unrelated (at best) to profit. Such as human rights.
david_frier··on Sundar Pichai: Privacy Should Not Be a Luxury Good
If you cringe a little you're really almost-acknowledging that you haven't /really/ done anything for your privacy. Maybe using Apple products is a bit of g33k virtue-signaling?
