david38··on My little sister's use of ChatGPT for homework is heartbreaking
LLM’s are notoriously bad at math. My company tried it and the results were laughable.

A calculator eliminates the arithmetic part, thus doing “all” of “2+2”.

Half the point if a word problem is learning how to set up the arithmetic. “Convert 3 minutes to seconds”. You are learning that there are 60 seconds in a minute, that you have to use multiplication, and that the result is in seconds, not something else you need to convert.

The LLM does ALL of this for you. You literally just have to copy / paste.

Zero learning

Fasting is a great way to induce massive muscle loss. In almost every case, cutting weight loss by 60% in order to preserve muscle is desirable

Farmers markets are in no way cheap. I live here as well and they are luxury
david38··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Problem then when you get bored, your bookstore still requires work.

At a certain level of wealth, any job you can do can be done by someone else better and cheaper

david38··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
They sing the praises in the Bay Area? What pay do they get? This is one of the least affordable places in the country
david38··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
I would love for astroturfing to be illegal and heavily enforced.
david38··on Why are Americans paying so much more for healthcare than they used to?
This is so retarded it must be satire
david38··on Why are Americans paying so much more for healthcare than they used to?
Doctors wages are not why costs are high
david38··on The higher fertility of TSMC semiconductor workers
I disagree. The less a company is involved in my life. Bad enough my health care comes from them.

Companies should not be what holds up society. It gives them too much power. It also amplifies the divide between haves and haves not.

david38··on Canada euthanasia now accounts for nearly one in 20 deaths
You are incorrect. You don’t have to be doing something 24 hrs a day to be spending your days doing it.

If you were a child who was raped every night by your father, you could absolutely say with honesty that you spent your nights getting raped.

What matters is - does the event significantly affect the rest of your day? Not - is the event happening non-stop. If that were the case, you could vomit every hour and still not be able to make the claim, since there are periods of rest.

david38··on GM exits robotaxi market, will bring Cruise operations in house
GM controls the profits the dealers make. They can easily incentivize quality training
david38··on CT Scans of New vs. Used SawStop
Damn. I’ve wanted one of those for years. What model and what did it set you back?
david38··on Lossless Log Aggregation – Reduce Log Volume by 99% Without Dropping Data
This is why metrics rule and logging in production need only be turned on to debug specific problems and even then have a short TTL

david38··on My brand new digitizing workflow using a 25 year old film scanner
Wow. Blast from the past. I had both the Coolscan 9000 and LS-2000.

I now use a system from Negative Supply.

david38··on FTC takes action against Gravy Analytics, Venntel for selling location data
This is false. Corporations want to make money. A big way to do this is to sell your data to governments.

Another way is to use your data to help them become a monopoly and/or manipulate you.

It’s not “sell more stuff”, it’s “assist governments and extract money by any means, including robbing you”.

david38··on Taxing unrealized gains has caused an entrepreneurial exodus in Norway
Statistics is exactly how people paint. Surely you’ve heard “there’s, damn lies, and statistics”?
david38··on What happened when a city started accepting - not evicting - homeless camps
You must not have children
david38··on School did nothing wrong when it punished student for using AI, court rules
Agreed.

Only someone trying to cheat would use the excuse that it wasn’t explicitly stated that AI was cheating.

This reminds me of the court case where they asked the court to define child pornography and they said “I can can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.”

Imagine saying with a straight face that some pictures you have of a minor are fine because this particular pose, facial expression, and clothing wasn’t specifically designed child porn. It would instantly make you sound like a pedo, like he sounds like a cheater

david38··on A $12k Surgery to Change Eye Color Is Surging in Popularity
Except black hair isn’t associated with any culture or people. Dark brown and black are just “hair”. Blonde hair, blue eyes, etc are specifically associated with Nordics, even if some other small populations have those traits.

That said, cultural appropriation is bullshit. It’s a made-up word because they couldn’t say “stole”.

david38··on M4 Macs can't virtualise older macOS
How is Mac no longer a revenue stream for Adobe?
david38··on Disney Plus and Hulu won't let you sign up through Apple anymore
I canceled my subscription a few weeks ago and was just billed again two days ago. Surprise surprise.

I asked Apple for a refund and got one fairly quickly, no questions asked.

Somehow Disney can’t handle this

david38··on The Great Splunkbundling (2021)
I was there as well for years until 2021 in cloud. The fact that you know Rainmaker is pretty solid evidence you know the evolution of cloud.
david38··on Scientists successfully breed corals to improve their heat tolerance
Spilling fuel into the water, dumping garbage into the water (nearby restaurants and hotels)
david38··on Scientists successfully breed corals to improve their heat tolerance
Why would it? I’m a scuba diver and I don’t pour hot water on corals.

My primary function for diving is to protect the kelp forest where I usually dive by removing sea urchins, whose population has exploded, killing the kelp. This is done in conjunction with the department of fish and wildlife.

Any scuba diver knows never to touch the coral, the ground, or anything like that. Fairly simple

david38··on UCLA professor says he's homeless due to low pay
No it isn’t. You’re implying education = higher standard of living, more jobs. It doesn’t.

One man can make a video lesson and teach millions, so more educators doesn’t mean more educated.

You can change the teacher:student ratio and still improve the number of educated. If you think this is false, then anything beyond 1:1 tutors is bad. Yet UCLA doesn’t operate on 1:1 ratios.

Finally, what makes you think there will be less educators? Very likely UCLA can rely on the rich and nerdy people who are willing to subsidize their own careers. This already happens in many fields.

Really finally, this is a shit practice. I’d like to see an audit of where the money goes such that the most student focused educators become last in line to get paid.

david38··on East and Gulf Coast ports strike
If you want to not have this, have a system where people who depend on archaic work don’t have to.

If all I know how to do is mine coal and there is no realistic way to move to something else and maintain my standard of living, I’m going to support coal, no matter what.
