davecyen··on Roomblocker (YC S15) is modernizing hotel booking for groups
Thanks! The #1 requested feature from our users was a better way to fill and manage a room block once it's booked.

Passkey is a great tool that was originally built for hotels, but it's an awful experience for planners and attendees - frequent errors that prevent attendees from booking their dates, annoying alerts, and an overall clunky user experience.

We wanted to put the planner in control and build a modern user experience around it.

Thanks! We both worked at Salesforce, which is a huge events-driven company, and room blocks were always a huge pain point for attendees and also for planners. I also organized group trips in college and high school which I think planted the seed.

Thanks for the post! Founder here, happy to answer any questions about Roomblocker.

davecyen··on Webhook – demolishes Kickstarter target
This is cool, and there's definitely a need for a better WordPress, but I feel like this setup flow is backwards. Ideally, the flow would be something like this: I go to webhooks.com. Create an account, then create a new project (newproject.webhooks.com). I can edit my site from my site's admin page (newproject.webhooks.com/admin), or as an advanced option, I can install the repo locally to fully edit the code.

Am I missing something here? Don't understand why a user would want to install locally first. Also especially for a non-technical person, this creates barriers to get started.

davecyen··on Ask HN: Do you cold call?
DON'T: Be scripted. Ask stupid questions that are supposed to be leading, like "Do you want to increase your revenue and cut costs?". Go straight into pitch mode. Call them so often that it pisses them off.

DO: Keep it brief, don't give the full pitch. Ask for 15 minutes on the calendar to explain in more detail. Ask if you caught them at a good time. If not, ask when would be better to call back. Leave a voicemail. Be casual and genuinely excited to talk to them, like hearing from an old friend. Send 3-4 sentence email, both for intro and to follow up ("My voicemail" subject lines get good open rates). Call multiple people at different levels in the organization (and ask if they're the right person to speak to).

davecyen··on How Emacs changed my life
Self admittedly, I'm a newb at coding but I've tried emacs and am not a fan. I get the benefits of being able to debug and execute code immediately in the REPL, but I would much rather write code in sublime text or any other text editor. The last thing I want to do when I'm writing code is try to remember some obscure combination of keys in order to perform a simple backspace or copy and paste a line of code. Have not been convinced otherwise yet, maybe someone here can better enlighten me

This is an awesome demo. Way to go and best of luck. I have a feeling you will go far.
davecyen··on GroupMe: Split the Bill
"How much does it cost? Per transaction, contributors will be charged 3.5% on whatever they chip in for a Credit Card Processing Fee. GroupMe charges a .99 convenience fee."

They also state that they are using Balanced Payments to process the payments, which charges 2.9% + 30c per payout (and additional 25c per deposit). I'm skeptical that users would even be willing to pay this rate...

davecyen··on A New Look for Facebook
This navigation and grid layout looks ironically similar to the new and redesigned MySpace. When screenshots of the new MySpace were first revealed, there was lots of hype and praise for the new and aesthetically sharp designs. But now that users are able to access and use the product, haven't heard much more besides the usability being poor and product being an example of feature overkill. I would predict a similar result if Facebook were to implement this

Thanks for organizing. Free is very appreciated. Sounds like format/agenda is still in the works, any possibility of posting a rough idea of what to expect before would be sweet.
davecyen··on Elon Musk: With Jobs Gone, Google Will Win Mobile (And Look Out For Hyperloop)
Elon Musk is an inspiration - he looks at big, real world problems and solves for them instead of spinning his wheels on the next shiny app. Especially appreciate his views on too many people going into finance or law rather than science and engineering.

Poor editing in this article, if anyone finds a video of the original interview please post - tried to search for it but no luck.

davecyen··on Show HN: Instant Google Street View
Contrary to what some of the commenters said about this being non-useful and just novelty, I think this brings forward one of the best features of Google Maps by cutting out a lot of (potentially frustrating) steps in the UX. Here’s the typical flow for finding street view when searching on maps.google.com:

1. Submit search query 2. Review results list 3. Repeat 1-2 in case user did not find their intended target 4a. Drag the street view marker onto the map OR 4b+5. Click “more” from the results list, then Street view

Instant Google Street View reduces this to just one easy step, and makes it much more fun along the way.

I think the benefit of this is similar to the benefit of Google’s instant search results - making the UX fast, efficient, and fun to discover what you’re looking for. The creator of this should definite consider expanding this to also include street view and satellite view (surprised Google hasn’t done this already).

And I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a call from Google soon for an interview… either for a job offer or a acqui-hire.

Cheers, nicely done.

davecyen··on Announcing Instagram Profiles on the Web
I'm surprised they didn't bake a deeper integration with Facebook profile and photos instead of making Instagram more Facebook-like with potentially competing features. As a user I do think this is the right approach to keep both services running as separate networks, but in the long term I'm not sure if operating as independent kingdoms will be sustainable if they continue to merge closer in features. Facebook Camera now offers filters, Instagram now has profiles in browser... Maybe its own news feed next? Not to mention profile and news feed fatigue that could hurt engagement for both...

But that's all cynical speculation, congrats to FB and Instagram for not killing off Instagram. My gut says that's the right decision.

davecyen··on Login Screen – behind the scenes
Have you tested offering users Facebook oAuth? Seems to be increasingly popular, even regardless of how relevant Facebook integration would be for your user base and product. Just one less email/password combination to remember
