dave4420··on Musk Vaulted to the Top of Diablo IV. Everyone's Asking Where He Found the Time
Isn’t he supposed to be CEO of like six companies (one of them public)? Oh, and preparing to take up a government role later this month?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Has Musk "lost the plot"?
Historians will have so much fun with him.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why don't companies make applicants pay a fee to apply to a job?
In what way do people who need a new job not have skin in the game?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why don't companies make applicants pay a fee to apply to a job?
But then it means the only people who apply will be the sort of people who tend not to even get phone screens… is that really who you want to be spending your time interviewing?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why don't companies make applicants pay a fee to apply to a job?
In the UK, most letting fees charged to tenants were banned a few years ago, because it was felt that letting agents were acting abusively. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/tenant-fees-act

If I had to pay a fee to apply for a job, I’d assume that it was a scam and that there was no job on offer.

dave4420··on Brazil eliminated daylight saving time. It's having second thoughts
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Brazil says 93% of the population live in Brazil’s main time zone.

So what?

I was wondering how much the day length actually varies in Brazil. Isn’t most of the country near the equator?

dave4420··on Brazil eliminated daylight saving time. It's having second thoughts
What should it have said about time zones?
dave4420··on Ask HN: You get a chance to visit the past, where do you go?
Am I allowed to take lethal weaponry with me?

Or books? How many?

dave4420··on 2025 calendar is the same as the 1969 one
I guess people like to think the Americans are going to land on the moon again, or something.
dave4420··on 2025 calendar is the same as the 1969 one
And unless Easter is important enough for you that you count it as part of the calendar.

Seriously… Easter was the main motivation for the Gregorian calendar’s creation.

dave4420··on iTerm2 critical security release
It seems that I had iTerm2 configured to display bold text as bright text (instead of bold). And I use bold, coloured text in my prompt, so that threw me.

I configured

    bold-is-bright = true
and suddenly everything looks fine. I'll see how I get on with it.

https://ghostty.org/docs/config/reference#bold-is-bright

dave4420··on Ask HN: When did we decide that off-black backgrounds were cool?
One other, less important reason: if you want to have a drop shadow, then your background had better not already be truly black.
dave4420··on iTerm2 critical security release
I tried Ghostty earlier in the week, but couldn’t get it set up to look the same as iterm2 (the colours are off and text looks different somehow with the same typeface at the same size). Which is just cosmetic but makes it feel wrong viscerally.

I’ll give it another go at the weekend.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Why dollar sign for shell commands?
Bash’s default prompt ends with a $ when it’s not running as root.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why is Gmail account recovery a pain in the ass?
Avoid this next time by using a password manager, keeping the list of recovery codes for that password manager in a safe place or two, and checking every so often that you can still find the recovery codes.
dave4420··on Simulating Dark Mode on iPhone
Fair point
dave4420··on Simulating Dark Mode on iPhone
Or… you could enable dark mode for real in Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Appearance, and use reader mode for websites that don’t respect it.
dave4420··on Toronto man creates tiny mobile homes to help unhoused people escape the cold
It is to distinguish between “homeless and living on the streets” from “homeless and living on friends’ floors”?
dave4420··on Ask HN: In basketball, why not award points based on ball speed through hoop?
Would you award more points for a higher or lower ball speed?

This would mean that basketball would suddenly become a more expensive game to play, would it not? What would that do to grassroots participation?

dave4420··on Node.js can now run TypeScript directly
> By default Node.js will execute only files that contain no TypeScript features that require transformation, such as enums or namespaces.

There is a further switch, not yet switched on by default, that performs these transformations.

dave4420··on Detect and remove dead code automatically with "TypeScript Remove (tsr)"
*linting
dave4420··on Musk, Ramaswamy defend Silicon Valley's foreign-born hires
Musk is an immigrant.

Musk is exactly the sort of rootless global elite that so many nationalist populists have a problem with… but he gets a free pass.

dave4420··on Detect and remove dead code automatically with "TypeScript Remove (tsr)"
Can I add a comment to some dead code so that it gets left alone? (Similar to how you can switch off minting for a single line.) Use case is when a utility function is currently unused, but probably will be needed again in the future.
dave4420··on Ask HN: How to Monetize a Trading Strategy?
Why not just trade using it?
dave4420··on For the love of god, stop building cups into Linux distros
Would I be able to print to PDF without cups?
dave4420··on Ask HN: How does world look like post AGI?
If AGI resulted in software engineer employment getting wiped out, that would not result in governments introducing UBI, no.

I have my doubts that the people owning AGI would allow the rest of us to make money from them, when they could make money from them instead.

dave4420··on Why Apple sends spyware victims to this nonprofit security lab
IIRC, it also disables the Javascript jit compiler and configuration profiles.
dave4420··on Two-Party Consent Laws Should Be Ruled Unconstitutional
You should try to steel man this.

For example, were these laws created in response to recording devices being invented or becoming widely used? If so, could governments have a legitimate interest in establishing and enforcing generally expected standards of behaviour in order to maintain levels of trust in society?

This would not apply to people gossiping because gossiping predates governments.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Handling Two Identical Resumes?
Not saying this isn’t a scam, but on the phone number thing…

I sometimes leave my phone number off my CV, because

(a) I hate phone calls: the sound quality is shit and I have trouble understanding people. I much prefer zoom/teams/whatever

(b) I hate it when people (either hiring managers or recruiters) phone me while I’m in an interview… not handing out my phone number to all and sundry helps me avoid that

I’d really hate it if people interpreted “no phone number on CV” as meaning “probably a scammer” :-(

dave4420··on Ask HN: Why did psychology take so long to evolve?
I’m not sure the ancients had even basic stats?

But also… didn’t it require a cultural shift from seeing psychological problems as being caused by demons, or as being part of the nature of a person, to seeing them as pathologies that could be cured?
